Variations in Sweetpotato Regenerates from Gamma-ray Irradiated Embryogenic Callus

  • Radiation induced and somaclonal variations were investigated in the regenerates from gamma irradiated and controlled embryogenic callus (EC) of sweetpotato cvs., Yulmi and White Star by morphological, RAPD and AFLP analysis. Most (approx. 90%) of the EC produced somatic embryos developed into plantlets after being transferred to the auxin-free medium. The frequency of morphological variants derived from the irradiated callus ranged from 3 to 7.8% compared to 0.1-1.1% of that derived from the non-irradiated. Morphological variants were selected from the regenerates and analyzed by RAPD and AFLP procedures. RAPD polymorphisms of Yulmi and White Star regenerates from irradiated calli were 8.8% and 6.1%, respectively. However, the polymerphisms among regenerates from the non-irradiation treatment in these two cultivars were non-detectable and 3%, respectively. AFLP polymorphisms of Yulmi and White Star regenerates from irradiated calli were 29.9% and 28.6%, respectively. while the frequencies for those form non-irradiated calli were 8.5% and 5.6%, respectively. Gravitational Instability of Rotating Isothermal Rings

  • Nuclear rings at centers of barred galaxies exhibit strong star formation activities. They are thought to undergo gravitational instability when sufficiently massive. We approximate them as rigidly-rotating isothermal objects and investigate their gravitational instability. Using a self-consistent eld method, we first construct their equilibrium sequences specified by two parameters: ${\alpha}$ corresponding to the thermal energy relative to gravitational potential energy, and $R_B$ measuring the ellipticity or ring thickness. The density distributions in the meridional plane are steeper for smaller ${\alpha}$, and well approximated by those of infinite cylinders for slender rings. We also calculate the dispersion relations of nonaxisymmetric modes in rigidly-rotating slender rings with angular frequency ${\Omega}$ and central density ${\rho}_c$. Rings with smaller are found more unstable with a larger unstable range of the azimuthal mode number. The instability is completely suppressed by rotation when ${\Omega}$ exceeds the critical value. The critical angular frequency is found to be almost constant at $0.7(G{\rho}_c)^{1/2}$ for ${\alpha}$ > 0.01 and increases rapidly for smaller ${\alpha}$. We apply our results to a sample of observed star-forming rings and confirm that rings without a noticeable azimuthal age gradient of young star clusters are indeed gravitationally unstable.

The dynamical evolution of very dense star clusters in a very strong tidal field

  • Within 100 pc of the Galactic Centre the tidal field is extremely strong. We investigate the survival of star clusters of different masses in strong tidal fields. We show that dense low-mass clusters are destroyed by strong tidal fields as the tidal fields add energy to the cluster. Only massive clusters (like the Arches) can survive for more than 1-2 Myr in strong tidal fields. Therefore, in Galactic Centre environments only massive young clusters should ever be observed.

  • 현재 대학공연장에 다양하고 화려한 조명을 많이 사용된다. 많은 수량이 필요한 등기구에 활용가능한 LED 등기구가 대체 선호되고, LED 등기구 장점인 에너지 절감에 대해 연구를 진행하였다. 설비와 장비에 대한 교체 비용을 포함하여 기존할로겐 등기구보다 LED등기구가 약3,000만원 정도 에너지 절감이 되는 것을 알 수 있었다.

A WISE View of E+A Galaxies

  • E+A galaxies are interpreted as post-starburst systems because of strong Balmer absorption lines but any emission lines indicating the lack of current star formation activities, thus they are one of key populations for understanding how star formation activities evolve in galaxies. We present mid-infrared (MIR) spectral energy distributions of E+A galaxies using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) preliminary released data. Furthermore, we investigate the role of environment with respect to the MIR properties of E+A galaxies.

X-ray properties of PWNe measured with the NuSTAR telescopes

  • Young pulsar wind nebulae, powered by energetic central pulsars, are often observed as bright extended sources in the X-ray band. They are believed to accelerate electrons and positrons to very high energy and can possibly explain the positron excess observed by Fermi and AMS. The electron distribution in these PWNe can be best studied by X-ray satellites because emission in the X-ray band is produced by direct synchrotron radiation of the electrons and positrons. We present NuSTAR studies of PWNe and discuss the implication. Future studies to help further our understanding of particle acceleration will be briefly discussed.

Modification of a cosmological hydrodynamic code for more realistic baryonic physics

  • structure of matters of Lambda cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology on detailed numerical simulations. To accomplish our research goal, we have added the following baryonic physics on the existing cosmological hydrodynamic code, Gadget-2: 1) radiative heating and cooling, 2) reionization of the Universe and UV shielding, 3) star formation, 4) energy and metallicity feedback by supernova. In addition, we included cluster formation to distinguish clustered star formation inside the very high density gas clumps from the field star formation. Our simulations cover a cubic box of a side length 4Mpc/h with 130 million particles. The mass of each particles is $3.4{\times}104Msun$, thus the GCs can be resolved with more than hundreds particles. We discuss various properties of the GCs such as mass function, specific frequency, baryon-to-dark matter ratio, metallicity, spatial distribution, and orbit eccentricity distribution as functions of redshift. We also discuss how the formation and evolution of the GCs are affected by UV shielding.

  • IEEE 802.15.4는 저전력 무선 개인 네트워크(LR-WPAN, Low Rate-Wireless Personal Area Network)를 위한 표준으로 무선 센서 네트워크 기술에서 광범위하게 사용되고 있다. 그러나 IEEE 802.15.4는 멀티홉 네트워크나 여러 개의 PAN(Personal Area Network)으로 구성된 네트워크에 대해서는 상세하게 기술하고 있지 않다. 본 논문에서는 IEEE 802.15.4를 기반으로 하는 ZigBee RF4CE 네트워크에서 사용하는 multiple star 토폴로지를 주목하였다. multiple star 토폴로지처럼 여러 개의 PAN 간에 통신이 이루어질 경우, 이를 에너지 효율적으로 수행할 수 있도록 하는 비컨 간격(Beacon Interval)과 슈퍼프레임 시간(Superframe Duration)을 분석한다. 이를 위해 QualNet 시뮬레이터를 이용하여 multiple star 토폴로지 네트워크를 형성하고, 비컨 간격과 슈퍼프레임 시간을 결정하는 요소에 대해 분석하였다.

  • 센서노드의 에너지를 절약하는 것은 네트워크 수명을 늘리기 위해 필요하다. 센서의 에너지는 파워를 교체할 수 없기 때문에 매우 중요하다. 에너지를 절약함으로써 네트워크의 자원을 절약하고 더 오랫동안 사용할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 베이스 스테이션을 활용하여 라우팅 프로토콜을 최적화하기 위한 프로토콜인 BSAH 를 제안하였다. BSAH 는 BeamStar 처럼 베이스스테이션이 안테나의 방향을 고려하여 센서를 나눈다. BSAG 는 PEGASIS 나 CHIRON 보다 25%에서 30% 정도 우수한 성능을 보였다.

ISRMC-MAC: Implementable Single-Radio, Multi-Channel MAC Protocol for WBANs

  • Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) have received a lot of attention as a promising technology for medical and healthcare applications. A WBAN should guarantee energy efficiency, data reliability, and low data latency because it uses tiny sensors that have limited energy and deals with medical data that needs to be timely and correctly transferred. To satisfy this requirement, many multi-radio multi-channel MAC protocols have been proposed, but these cannot be implemented on current off-the-shelf sensor nodes because they do not support multi-radio transceivers. Thus, recently single-radio multi-channel MAC protocols have been proposed; however, these methods are energy inefficient due to data duplication. This paper proposes a TDMA-based single-radio, multi-channel MAC protocol that uses the Unbalanced Star+Mesh topology to satisfy the requirements of WBANs. Our analytical analysis together experiments using real sensor nodes show that the proposed protocol outperforms existing methods in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, and low data latency.
