  • In this paper, a two-switch high frequency flyback transformer linked zero voltage soft switching PWM DC-DC power converter implemented for distributed DC- feeding power conditioning supplies is proposed and discussed. This switch mode power converter circuit is mainly based on two main active power semiconductor switches and a main flyback high frequency transformer linked DC-DC converter in which, two passive lossless quasi-resonant snubbers with pulse current regeneration loops for energy recovery to the DC supply voltages composed of a three winding auxiliary high frequency pulse transformer, auxiliary capacitors and auxiliary diodes for inductive energy recovery discharge blocking due to snubber capacitors are introduced to achieve zero voltage soft switching from light to full load conditions. It is clarified that the passive resonant snubber-assisted soft switching PWM DC-DC power converter has some advantages such as simple circuit configuration, low cost, simple control scheme, high efficiency and lowered noises due to the soft switching commutation. Its operating principle is also described using each mode equivalent circuit. To determine the optimum resonant snubber circuit parameters, some practical design considerations are discussed and evaluated in this paper. Moreover, through experimentation the practical effectiveness of the proposed soft switching PWM DC-DC power converter using IGBTs is evaluated and compared with a hard switching PWM DC-DC power converter.

  • This paper proposes a new alternating current driving method for highly capacitive loads such as plasma display panels or piezoelectric actuators, etc. In the proposed scheme, a current balance transformer, which has two windings with the same turn-ratio, provides not only a resonance inductance for energy recovery but also a current balance among all of the switching devices of the driver for current stress reduction. The smaller conduction loss than conventional circuits occurs due to the dual conduction paths which are parallel each other in the current balance transformer. Also, the leakage inductances of the transformer are utilized as resonant inductors for energy recovery by the series resonance to the capacitive load. Furthermore, the resonance contributes to the small switching losses of the switching devices by soft-switching operation. To confirm the validity of the proposed circuit, prototype hardware with a 12-inch mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp is implemented. The experimental results are compared with a conventional energy-recovery circuit from the perspective of luminance performances.

  • In the case of frequent braking, when driving downhill or long distance, conventional brakes using friction are problematic in braking safety due to brake rupture and fading phenomenon. Therefore auxiliary brakes is essential for heavy vehicles. And several research has been actively conducted to improve energy efficiency by regenerating mechanical energy into electric energy when the vehicles brake. In this paper, a voltage control method is utilized to recover the electric energy generated in the electromagnetic retarder instead of the eddy current. To regenerate the braking energy into the electrical energy, a resonant L-C circuit is configured in the retarder. The retarder can be modeled as self-excited induction generator due to its operating principle. The driving conditions according to the retarder's parameters are made into 3-D maps. Also, the voltage of the resonant circuit changing depending on the driving pulse applied to the FET was analyzed. For the control of this voltage, we proposed an algorithm using the PI controller. The controlled voltage is converted by a 3-phase AC/DC converter and then charged to a battery inside the heavy vehicles through a DC/DC converter. Electromagnetic retarder and its controller are validated using Matlab Simulink. We also demonstrate the voltage controller through the actual M-G set experiment.

  • Heavy metals recovery from Printed Circuit Boards industrial wastewater is crucial because of its cost effectiveness and environmental friendliness. In this study, a copper recovery route combining the sequential processes of acid leaching and LIX 984N extracting with an electrowinning technique from Printed Circuit Boards production's sludge was performed. The used residual sludge was originated from Hanoi Urban Environment One Member Limited Company (URENCO). The extracted solution from the printed circuit boards waste sludge containing a high copper concentration of 19.2 g/L and a small amount of iron (0.575 ppm) was used as electrolyte for the subsequent electrolysis process. By using a simulation model for multi-step current electrolysis, the reasonable current densities for an electrolysis time interval of 30 minutes were determined, to optimize the specific consumption energy for the copper recovery. The mathematical simulation model was built to calculate the important parameters of this process.

  • In this paper, new high-efficiency zero voltage switching (ZVS) AC-DC boost converter is proposed to achieve power factor correction by simplifing energy recovery circuit. A lot of high power factor correction circuits have been proposed and applied to increase input power factor and efficiency. Most of these circuits may obtain unity power factor and achieve sinusoidal current waveform with zero voltage or/and zero current switching. However, it is difficult for them to obtain low cost, small size, low weight, and low noise. The topology proposed to improve these problems can compact the devices in circuit and can achieve high efficiency ZVS AC-DC boost converter. Simulation and experimental results show that this topology is capable of obtaining high power factor and increasing the efficiency of the system.

  • The sustain driver for AC plasma display panel should provide alternating high voltage pulses to ignite plasma and recover the energy discharged from the intrinsic capacitance between the scanning and sustaining electrodes inside the panel. In this paper, an efficient sustain circuit employing boost-up function is proposed to achieve a faster rise-time in order to be suitable to widely used the address display period separated (ADS) driving method. The proposed circuit improves the recovery efficiency, regardless of the variation of the panel capacitance. The principle of operation, features, and simulated results are illustrated and verified on a 7.5-inch diagonal panel at 200 [kHz] operating frequency based on experimental prototype.

  • A new high-performance and low cost single switch energy recovery display driver for an AC plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed. Since it is composed of only one auxiliary power switch, two small inductors, and eight diodes compared with the conventional circuit consisting of four auxiliary power switches, two small inductors, eight power diodes, and two external capacitors, it features a much simpler structure and lower cost. Nevertheless, since the rootmean-square (RMS) value of the inductor current is very small, it also has very desirable advantages such as n low conduction loss and high efficiency. Furthermore, there are no serious voltage-drops caused by the large gas-discharge current with the aid of the discharge current compensation, which can also greatly reduce the current flowing through power switches and maintain the panel to light at n lower sustaining voltage. In addition, all main power switches are turned on under the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and thus, the proposed circuit has a improved EMI, increased reliability, and high efficiency. Therefore, the proposed circuit will be well suited to the wall hanging PDP TV. To confirm the validity of the proposed circuit, circuit operations, features, and design considerations are presented and verified experimentally on a 6-inch PDP, 50kHz-switching frequency, and sustaining voltage 141V based prototype.

  • This paper introduces the modified slip energy recovery system in order to improve its power factor and to reduce harmonics of line current waveforms. Twelve pulse line commutated converter with the chopper type IGBT is applied where the chopper is applied across the DC terminal and the chopped DC is fed to the converter operating as an inverter and then passed through the wye-wye and delta-wye transformer circuit. This scheme leads to be able to adjust the speed of the motor by the duty cycle of the chopper operating in PWM mode. The fuzzy logic controller is also introduced to the modified slip energy recovery system for keeping the motor speed to be constant when the load varies. The experimental results in testing the 0.22 kW wound rotor induction motor from no-load condition to rated condition show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
