  • The switching power loss due to the panel capacitance during sustain period in AC PDP driving system can be minimized by using the energy recovery circuits. We proposed a new energy recovery circuit, SER1 (Seoul national univ. Energy Recovery circuit 1st). The experimental results of its application to a 42-inch surface discharge type AC PDP showed superior performance of SER1 in energy recovery efficiency and low distortion voltage waveform. Energy recovery efficiency of SER1 was measured up to 92.3 %, and the power dissipation during the sustain period was reduced by 15.2 W in 2000 pulse/frame compared with serial LC resonance energy recovery circuit.

  • In this paper, a novel energy recovery circuit for AC PDPs(Plasma Display Panels) with reduced sustain voltage is proposed to improve the performance of conventional circuits such as TERES(TEchnology of REciprocal Sustainer). In the TERES circuit, the sustain voltage is the half of general sustaining driver for AC PDPs, however, there is no energy recovery circuit. In the proposed circuit, the efficiency is heightened by installing in energy recovery circuit and the loss of switching device is reduced by performing the zero voltage switching or zero current switching. Although the energy recovery circuit is added, the number of active switching elements of the proposed circuit is the same as that of the TERES circuit. The operations of the proposed circuit are analyzed for each mode and its validity is verified by the simulations and experimentation.

  • A cost-effective magnetic-coupled AC-PDP sustain driver with low switching loss is proposed. The transformer reduces current stress in the energy recovery switches which affects circuit cost and reliability. The turns-ratio can be used to adjust the sustain pulse slopes which affect gas discharge uniformity. Dividing the recovery paths prevents abrupt changes in the output capacitance and thereby switching losses of the recovery switches is reduced. In addition, the proposed circuit has a more simple structure because it does not use the recovery path diodes which also afford a large recovery current. By reducing the current stress and device count in the energy recovery circuit, the proposed driver may have decreased circuit cost and improved circuit reliability.

  • A new sustainer with primary-side integration of DC/DC converters and energy recovery(SPIDER) circuits is proposed. The proposed circuit operates as a DC-DC converter during address period and energy recovery circuit during sustain period. Therefore, the conventional three electronic circuits composed of the power supply, X-driver, and Y-driver can be reduced to one circuit. As a result, it has desirable advantages such as a simple structure, less mass, fewer devices and cost reduction. Moreover, since the Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) of all power switches can be guaranteed, a switching loss can be considerably decreased. To confirm the operation, validity, and features of the proposed circuit, experimental results from a prototype for 42-inch PDP are presented.

  • A high performance and low cost single switch current fed energy recovery circuit (ERC) for an alternating current (AC) plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed. Since it is composed of only one power switch compared with the conventional circuit consisting of four power switches and two large energy recovery capacitors, the ERC features a simpler structure and lower cost. Furthermore, since all power switches can be switched under soft switching operating conditions, the proposed circuit has desirable merits such as increased reliability and low switching loss. Specifically, there are no serious voltage notches across the PDP with the aid of gas discharge current compensation, which can greatly reduce the current stress of all inverter switches, and provide those switches with the turn on timing margin. To confirm the validity of proposed circuit, its operation and performance were verified on a prototype for 7-inch test PDP.

  • This paper proposes a test device designed for developing a high-voltage multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC). The proposed topology consists of an energy recovery circuit for charging/discharging capacitor, a flyback converter, and a boost converter for supplying power and a bias voltage application to the energy recovery circuit. The energy recovery circuit designed with a half-bridge converter has auxiliary switches operating before the main switches to prevent excessive current from flowing to the main switches. A prototype has been designed to verify the reliability of target capacitors following the voltage fluctuation with a frequency range below 65 kHz. To conduct high root mean square (RMS) current to the capacitor as a load, the MLCC test was conducted after the topology verification was completed through the film capacitor as a load. Through the agreement between the RMS current formula proposed in this paper and the MLCC test results, the possibility of its use was demonstrated for high-voltage MLCC development in the future.

  • According to the wide - spread use of rectifier in electronic equipments, such problems as electronic components failures or equipment disorders have been occurred due to current harmonics. To overcome these problems, power factor correction circuits employing boost converter have been used. The high switching stress of boost converter can be reduced by snubber circuit. Recently, research activities in snubber circuits have been directed to energy recovery snubber for improving the efficiency of power converter. In this study, a new passive snubber circuit which can recover trapped snubber energy without added control is proposed for boost converter. The control of boost converter with proposed snubber is the same as the conventional one. In addition, the energy recovery circuit can be implemented with a few passive components. The circuit operation is confirmed through simulation.

  • Comparative study on a low cost sustaining driver with single and dual path energy recovery circuits for plasma display panels (PDPs) is shown in this paper. The cost of PDPs has been still high and about half of the cost has been occupied by driving circuit. A simple sustaining driver is proposed to reduce the cost and size of driving circuit. The proposed driver has small number of devices and reactive components and there are two methods for charging and discharging PDPs such as single and dual path energy recovery circuits. A comparative research on two-types of energy recovery path is practiced to evaluate performance. As a result, the dual energy recovery path circuit has low power consumption, low surge current and high performance. To verify those results, experiment will be shown with 42-inch HD panel.

  • The main switch of high-frequency boost converter may be failed because the high switching current or voltage can damage this switch. The high switching stress can be reduced by snubber circuit. In this paper, a new passive snubber circuit which can recover trapped snubber energy without added control is proposed for boost converter. The control of boost converter with proposed snubber is the same as the conventional one. In addition, the energy recovery circuit can be implemented with a few passive components. The analysis for proposed circuit is presented, and the validity of the circuit is verified through simulation and experiment.
