The Effects of Negative Carbon Ion Beam Energy on the Properties of DLC Film

  • The effects of negative carbon ion beam energy on the bonding configuration, hardness and surface roughness of DLC film prepared by a direct metal ion beam deposition system were investigated. As the negative carbon ion beam energy increased from 25 to 150 eV, the $sp^3$ fraction of DLC films was increased from 32 to 67%, while the surface roughness was decreased. The films prepared at 150 eV showed the more flat surface morphology of the film than that of the film prepared under another ion beam energy conditions. Surface roughness of DLC film varied from 0.62 to 0.22 nm with depositing carbon ion beam energy. Surface nano-hardness increased from 12 to 57 Gpa when increasing the negative carbon ion beam energy from 25 to 150 eV, and then decreased when increasing the ion beam energy from 150 to 200 eV.

Photocatalytic Properties of WO3 Thin Films Prepared by Electrodeposition Method (전기증착법으로 제조된 WO3 박막의 광촉매 특성)

  • Tungsten trioxide ($WO_3$) is a promising candidate as a photocatalyst because of its outstanding electrical and optical properties. In this study, we prepare $WO_3$ thin films by electrodeposition and characterize the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using these films. Depending on the voltage conditions (static and pulse), compact and porous $WO_3$ films are fabricated on a transparent ITO/glass substrate. The morphology and crystal structure of electrodeposited $WO_3$ thin films are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. An application of static voltage during electrodeposition yields a compact layer of $WO_3$, whereas a highly porous morphology with nanoflakes is produced by a pulse voltage process. Compared to the compact film, the porous $WO_3$ thin film shows better photocatalytic activities. Furthermore, a much higher reaction rate of degradation of methylene blue can be achieved after post-annealing of $WO_3$ thin films.

  • Electrochromic devices (ECDs) have been drawing great attention due to their high color contrast, low power consumption, and memory effect, and can be used in smart windows, automatic dimming mirrors, and information display devices. As with other electronic devices such as LEDs (light emitting diodes), solar cells, and transistors, the mechanical flexibility of ECDs is one of the most important issue for their potential applications. In this paper, we report on flexible ECDs (f-ECDs) fabricated using an all-in-one EC gel, which is a mixture of electrolyte and EC material. The f-ECDs are compared with rigid ECDs (r-ECDs) on ITO glass substrate in terms of color contrast, coloration efficiency, and switching speed. It is confirmed that the f-ECDs embedding all-in-one gel show strong blue absorption and have competitive EC performance. Repetitive bending tests show a degradation of electrochromic performance, which must be improved using an optimized device fabrication process.

  • A prototype of solenoidal superconducting magnet using Bi-2223/Ag multi-filamentary tapes was fabricated and tested to investigate its performance. The Bi-2223/Ag tapes were prepared by powder-in-tube method. The dimensions of magnet, which was stacked with 9 double pancakes, were 90 mm in height, 74 mm in outer diameter and 40 mm in clear core. The axial maximum magnet field at the center of the solenoidal magnet was about 0.12 T, and the critical current of coil conductor was about 9 A at 77.3 K.

  • We have succeeded in the preparation of high molecular weight polybenzimidazoles by solution polycondensation of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride with isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, or with their derivatives using polyphosphoric acid both as solvent and as condensing agent. Also, we modified phosphoric acid into fluoroalkyl-phosphonic acids[F-PA]. The main reasons are as follows, first of all F-PAs are stronger acids than PA and alkylphosphonic acids which should promote proton hopping and transport. In addition, F-PA has weaker adsorption onto Pt which help to prevent electrocatalyst poisoning and promote higher oxygen reduction activity. The ionic conductivity of 85%-H3PO4 doped membranes show $10^{-2}\;Scm^{-1}\;to\;3{\times}10^{-2}\;Scm^{-1}\;at\;150^{\circ}C$ MEA with 2 %-added electrolyte shows slightly higher cell voltage than the others.
