The Effect of Low Boiling Point Oxygenates on the Diesel Engine Performance and Emissions (저비점 함산소물질이 디젤기관의 성능과 배기배출물에 미치는 영향)

  • In the study, the effect of low boiling point oxygenates in high viscous fuels on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for a single cylinder DI diesel engine. It was tested to estimated change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the base fuels and low boiling point oxygenates blended fuel which have six kinds of fuels and various mixed rates. The results of the study may be con eluded as follows By blending of various low boiling point oxygenated agents to lower grade fuels, significant improvements were simultaneously obtained in smoke, CO, PM, SOF and BSEC. Especially, these trends were remarkably obtained by retarding injection timing, by decreasing boiling point and increasing blending contents of additives in case of oxygenated agents rather than non-oxygenated agents. Also, it was revealed that when 20 vol.% DMM added to high viscosity fuels and injection timing was retarded, Nox-smoke trade off relationship was much better than that of ordinary diesel fuel. Thus, lower grade fuels with high viscosity could be expected to be used efficiently and cleanly in diesel operation by blending low boiling point oxygenates.

  • Recently, with respect to an increase of energy consumption, many countries have tried to develop alternative fuels. In the United States, less than 10 percent of motor fuels will be displaced by alternative fuels by year 2010, with about 25 percent of the replacement fuels from renewable resources. But the level of exhaust gas is not decreased to the result of an increase of diesel vehicles. Moreover, emission regulations are being intensified by advanced countries such as America and Europe. Because Biodiesel is similar to diesel fuel, it is essential to judge the environmental and health effects deriving from the use of Biodiesel in diesel engine. Therefore, this research could be conformed whether both Biodiesel 20% and Biodiesel 100% are influenced on emission according to sulfur contents by applying DOC. As a result of using the Biodiesel, this research could be conformed though Nox was increased, CO, HC and PM were decreased, and also estimated to compare diesel fuel with the Biodiesel in accordance with engine performance and emission characteristics.

  • The enormous increase in the use of fossil energy sources throughout the world has caused severe air pollution and a depletion of energy. Besides, it seems very difficult to comply with the upcoming stringent emission standards in vehicles. In order to develop low emission engines, research on better qualified fuels as alternative fuels to secure high engine performance becomes a more important issue than ever. Since sulfur contained in diesel fuel is transformed in sulfate-laden particulate matters when a catalyst is applied, it is necessary to provide low sulfur fuels before any Pt-based oxidation catalysts are applied. But the excessive reduction of sulfur levels may cause the lubricity of fuel and engine performance to degrade. In this aspect, biodiesel fuel derived from rice bran is applied to compensate viscosity lost in the desulfurization treatment. This research is focused on the performance of an 11,000cc diesel engine and the emission characteristics by the introduction of ULSD(Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel), BD20(Diesel 80%+Biodiesel 20%) and a diesel oxidation catalyst, where BD20 is used to improve the lubricity of fuel in fuel injection systems as fuel additives or alternative fuels.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the impact of low level bio-alcohols that can be applied without modification of vehicles to improve air quality in Korea. The emissions and fuel economy of low level bio-alcohols mixed gasoline fuels of spark ignition vehicles, which are direct injection and port fuel injection, were studied in this paper. As a result of the evaluation, the particle number (PN) was reduced in all evaluation fuels compared to the sub octane gasoline without oxygen, but the correlation with the PN due to the increase in the oxygen content was not clear. In the CVS-75 mode, emitted CO tended to decrease compared to sub octane gasoline, but no significant correlation was found between NMHC, NOx and fuel economy. In addition, it was found that the aldehyde increased in the oxygenated fuel, and there was no difference in terms of the amount of aldehyde generated among a series of bio-alcohol mixed fuels.

  • Most of the world's energy demand is met by fossil fuels, mainly petroleum and natural gas. Even though their production is not keeping up with the demand, there are many options before us-solar energy in its direct and indirect forms, nuclear breeders, thermonuclear power, geothermal energy, synthetic fluid fuels, and hydrogen as energy carrier to complement the nonfossil energy sources. But, before these energy alternatives can be utilized, in most cases, it is necessary to conduct extensive research and development work. In order to solve global energy and environmental issues, it is very important to develop and install energy supply systems which utilizes natural energy. The installation of these systems brings the following merits from the viewpoints of energy saving or environmental protection-(a) the positive use of natural energy reduces fossil fuel consumption; and (b) it also prevents environmental degradation. In this paper, the types of natural energy considered is confined to the solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal and ocean-wave energy. And, the objective of the paper is to describe the state of the art of natural energy and future utilization prospect of them.

  • Negative environmental consequences of fossil fuels and the concerns about their soaring prices have spurred the search for alternative energy sources. While other alternative energies-like solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, and tidal-offer viable options for electricity generation, around 40% of total energy consumption requires liquid fuels like gasoline or diesel fuel. This is where bio-energy/biofuels is especially attractive, where they can serve as a practical alternative to oil. The production of liquid biofuels for transportation will depend upon a stable supply of large amount of inexpensive cellulosic biomass obtained on a sustainable basis. This paper reviewed development status of transportation bio-energy for vehicles, technical barriers to the production of cellulosic ethanol, and the global future of bio-diesel and ethanol production.

  • As disposal packaging concepts of spent fuels generated from the domestic NPP, two types, one is to package PWR and CANDU spent fuels in different containers and the other is to package them together, were proposed. The configuration of the containers and the layout of underground repository, such as the container spacing and the deposition tunnel spacing, were developed. The layout of underground repository satisfies the thermal constraint of the bentonite buffer surrounding disposal container, which should be lower than $100^{\circ}C$ in order to keep the physical and chemical properties of bentonite From the spent fuel packaging concepts and container emplacement methods, seven options were developed. With a typical pair-wise comparison methods, AHP, the most promising disposal concept was selected based on the technology Point of view.

  • The word \"permaculture\" is a contraction of \"permanent agriculture\" or \"permanent culture\". Permaculture principles are designed to support (or ensure) the survival of humanity, the earth and all on it, and, to improve our standard of living, Permaculture can be defined as : a design system for creating sustainable human environments that can be (relatively) easily constructed and maintained. The principles of permaculture designs are relative location every element (such as house , rice paddy, road, esc) is placed in relation to each other such that each assists the other : each element performs multiple functions ; each function is supported by many elements : energy efficient planning ; using biological resources rather than fossil fuels : energy cycling on site (both fuel and human energy) : Using and accelerating natural plant succession to establish favourable sites and soils ; poly-culture and diversity of beneficial species for a productive, interactive system ; use of edge and natural patterns for best effect. These principles can be used for any permaculture design, in any climate, and at any scale. Pyrolysis-Liquefaction of a Siberian Spruce Biomass (시베리아산 전나무 바이오매스의 열분해-액화반응)

  • Siberian spruce, found in the northern temperature and boreal regions of the earth, is usable biomass as fuels. In this study, parameters of thermochemical degradation by pyrolysis-liquefaction reaction of siberian spruce such as the effect of reaction temperature, reaction time and degradation products and energy yields were investigated. The liquid products from pyrolysis-liquefaction of siberian spruce contained various kinds of cyclicketones, cresols, dimethyl phenols and benzenediols. Combustion heating value of liquid products from pyrolysis-liquefaction conversion processes was in the range of $7,650{\sim}7,800cal/g$. The energy yield in pyrolysis-liquefaction of siberian spruce was as high as 69.5% after 40min of reaction at $400^{\circ}C$. The liquid products from the thermochemical conversion of siberian spruce could be used as high octane value fuels and fuel additives.
