Reference Spent Fuel and Its Characteristics for a Deep Geological Repository Concept Development

  • This study addresses the reference spent fuel and its characteristics for developing a geological repository concept. As a disposal capacity of the reference repository system to be developed, spent fuel inventories were projected based on the basis of the Nuclear Energy Plan of the Long-term National Power Program. The reference spent fuel encompassing a variability in characteristics of all existing and future spent fuels of interest was defined. Key parameters in the reference fuel screening processes were the nuclear and mechanical design parameters and the burnup histories for existing spent fuels as of 1996 and for future spent fuels with the more extended burnup the initial enrichment and its expected turnup. The selected reference fuel was characterized in terms of initial enrichment, bumup, dimension, gross weight and age. Also the isotopic composition and the radiological properties are quantitatively identified. This information provided in this study could be used as input for repository system development and performance assessment and applied in fuel material balance evaluation for the various types of back-end fuel cycle studies.

바이오매스 연료의 연소 특성 실험 (A Experiment of Combustion Behavior of Biomass Fuels)

  • There have been many studies of combustion in the circulating fluidized bed. However, little study is available for combustion of wood pellet together fed with wood chip. The mixed ratio of two fuels is an useful information when thermal power company would receive the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) from government. In this study, the combustion behavior and kinetics of such biomass fuels are evaluated using fluidized bed reactor and thermogravimetric analyzers. The mixing ratio of wood chip relative to wood pellet was varied at different temperatures. The results show that a combustion reactivity changed significantly at the wood chip mixing ratio of 40%, particularly at low temperature condition.

  • Nuclear energy plays an important role in world energy production by supplying 6% of the world's current total electricity production. However, 86% of the energy consumed worldwide to produce industrial process heat, to generate electricity and to power the transportation sector still originates in fossil fuels. To cope with dwindling fossil fuels and climate change, it is clear that a clean alternative energy that can replace fossil fuels in these sectors is urgently required. Clean hydrogen energy is one such alternative. Clean hydrogen can play an important role not only in synthetic fuel production but also through powering fuel cells in the anticipated hydrogen economy. With the introduction of the high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) that can produce nuclear heat up to $950^{\circ}C$ without greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power is poised to broaden its mission beyond electricity generation to the provision of nuclear process heat and the massive production of hydrogen. In this paper, the features and potential of the HTGR as the energy source of the future are addressed. Perspectives on nuclear heat and hydrogen applications using the HTGR are discussed.

  • The present paper describes the 45 MW High Flux Reactor (HFR) which is located in Petten, The Netherlands. This paper focuses on selected technical aspects of this reactor and on nuclear fuel irradiation experiments. These fuel experiments are mainly experiments on Light Water Reactor (LWR) and Very/High Temperature Reactor (V/HTR) fuels, but also on Fast Reactor (FR) fuels, transmutation fuels and Material Test Reactor (MTR) fuels.

  • Fast depletion of fossil fuels is urgently demanding a carry out work for research to find out the viable alternative fuels for meeting sustainable energy demand with minimum environmental impact. In the future, our energy systems will need to be renewable and sustainable, efficient and cost-effective, convenient and safe. Hydrogen is expected to be one of the most important fuels in the near future to meet the stringent emission norms. The use of the hydrogen as fuel in the internal combustion engine represents an alternative use to replace the hydrocarbons fuels, which produce polluting gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydro carbon (HC) during combustion. In this paper contemporary research on the hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine can be given. First hydrogen-engine fundamentals were described by examining the engine-specific properties of hydrogen and then existing literature were surveyed.

LFG(Landfill Gas) 혼합가스의 연소속도에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (A Numerical Study on the Burning Velocity of LFG Mixing Gas)

  • In this study, the burning velocity of LFG and LFG mixing fuels related with flame stabilization have been analyzed numerically using C3 reaction mechanism which consists of 92 species and 621 reaction for using LFG. The results show that the burning velocities of LFG and LFG mixing fuels are obtained as a function of CH$_4$ and LFG percent in stoichiometric conditions. Also, a correlation of the burning velocities LFG and LFG mixing fuels are obtained over a wide range of equivalence ratio. The comparison of burning velocity from correlation with that calculated numerically show good agreements. From these results, the proposed burning velocity correlations for LFG and LFG mixing fuels can be applied for the practice of LFG.

Life Cycle Analysis and Feasibility of the Use of Waste Cooking Oil as Feedstock for Biodiesel

  • Petroleum based fossil fuels used to power most processes today are non-renewable fuels. This means that once used, they cannot be reproduced for a very long time. The maximum combustion of fossil fuels occurs in automobiles i.e. the vehicles we drive every day. Thus, there is a requirement to shift from these non-renenewable sources of energy to sources that are renewable and environment friendly. This is causing the need to shift towards more environmentally-sustainable transport fuels, preferably derived from biomass, such as biodiesel blends. These blends can be made from oils that are available in abundance or as waste e.g. waste cooking oil, animal fat, oil from seeds, oil from algae etc. Waste Cooking Oil(WCO) is a waste product and so, converting it into a transportation fuel is considered highly environmentally sustainable. Keeping this in mind, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to evaluate the environmental implications of replacing diesel fuel with WCO biodiesel blends in a regular Diesel engine. This study uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to determine the environmental outcomes of biodiesel from WCO in terms of global warming potential, life cycle energy efficiency (LCEE) and fossil energy ratio (FER) using the life cycle inventory and the openLCA software, version 1.3.4: 2007 - 2013 GreenDelta. This study resulted in the conclusion that the biodiesel production process from WCO in particular is more environmentally sustainable as compared to the preparation of diesel from raw oil, also taking into account the combustion products that are released into the atmosphere as exhaust emissions.

마이크로그리드의 독립운영 및 연계운영에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Independent Operation and Connected Operation of Microgrid)

  • Fossil fuels are one of the various energy sources used by humans, and industrial development has been achieved by relying on fossil fuels for a long time in the past. In order to respond to the depletion of fossil fuels and climate change, the world is trying to build an eco-friendly energy ecosystem. Research on efficiency improvement using renewable energy and ESS in various ways for energy conversion is being promoted. In this paper, a microgrid for industrial complexes was designed, constructed, and demonstrated. It was operated in two modes: an independent mode that each plant generates and uses independently and a connected operation mode that allows energy sharing between factories. In the case of independent mode, PV and PCS were intermittently stopped and restarted according to the status change of SoC section of each site. But, in the case of the connected operation mode, stable power supply was confirmed through power transaction through the operation of the entire SoC. This paper presented and verified an algorithm to stably supply power to industrial complexes consisting of various consumers with different load characteristics.

Spray Characteristics of Hydrotreated Biodiesel Blended Fuels

  • Hydrotreated biodiesel (HBD) would be one of the promising alternative fuels instead of current biodiesel. In this study, spray characteristics in terms of spray penetration and spray angle were conducted experimentally including calculated SMDs as well. The ambient pressures of 1, 3, and 5 MPa and injection pressures of 30, 80, and 130 MPa were introduced and the fuels employed were petro-diesel, and 2, 10, 20, 30, and 50% for hydrotreated biodiesel, respectively. The result of this study found that the more HBD blended diesels have the slightly shorter spray tip penetration lengths especially on the lowest injection pressure and at the highest ambient pressure, but have the larger spray angles and SMDs than petro-diesel. Consequently, this study found that HBD has a little bit merits and demerits of macro- and micro- spray patterns compared to petro-diesel.

발전용 바이오매스 연료(WP·EFB·PKS)의 열분해 온도 조건에 따른 반탄화 및 염소 방출 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Torrefaction and Chlorine Release According to the Mild Pyrolysis Temperature Conditions of Biomass Fuels (WP·EFB·PKS) for Power Generation)

  • Wood pellet (WP), empty fruit bunch (EFB) and palm kernel shell (PKS) which are biomass fuels for power generation are selected to study the characteristics of torrefaction process. These biomass fuels are torrefied at $220^{\circ}C$, $250^{\circ}C$, and $280^{\circ}C$. The heating value of biomass fuels is increased depending on the torrefaction temperature. However, due to energy yield decline, it is not always desirable to torrefy biomass at higher temperature. Considering the mass yield and energy yield after torrefaction, the most proper temperature conditions for torrefaction of WP is $250-280^{\circ}C$ and for EFB, PKS are $220-250^{\circ}C$. Additionally, to investigate the phenomenons of chlorine release during torrefaction process, Ion Chromatography (IC) method was used. In the case of EFB and PKS torrefied at $300^{\circ}C$, the chlorine component has been reduced by 97.5% and 95.3% compared to the raw biomass, respectively. In conclusion, torrefied biomass can be used as alternative fuels in replacement of coals for both aspects of heating value and chlorine corrosion problems.
