  • Heat transfer experiments in an annulus passage were performed using SPHINX(Supercritical Pressure Heat Transfer Investigation for NeXt Generation), which was constructed at KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute), to investigate the heat transfer behaviors of supercritical $CO_{2}$. $CO_{2}$ was selected as the working fluid to utilize its low critical pressure and temperature when compared with water. The mass flux was in the range of 400 to 1200 $kg/m^{2}s$ and the heat flux was chosen at rates up to 150 $kW/m^{2}$. The selected pressures were 7.75 and 8.12 MPa. At lower mass fluxes, heat transfer deterioration occurs if the heat flux increases beyond a certain value. Comparison with the tube test results showed that the degree of heat transfer deterioration in the heat flux was smaller than that in the tube. In addition, the Nusselt number correlation for a normal heat transfer mode is presented.

  • This paper is concerned with the heat flux distribution and energy partition for creep-feed grinding. From measurements of transient grinding temperatures in the workpiece sub-surface using an embedded thermocouple, the overall energy partition to the workpiece was estimated from moving heat source theory for a triangular heat flux distribution as 3.0% for down grinding and 4.5% for up grinding. The higher energy partition for up grinding can be attribute to the need to satisfy thermal compatibility at the grinding zone. The influence of cooling outside the grinding zone can be analytically taken into account by specifying convective heat transfer coefficients on the workpiece surface ha ahead of the heat source (grinding zone) and hb behind the heat source. The smaller energy partition together with slightly lower grinding power favors down grinding over up grinding.

  • Critical heat flux refers to the sudden decrease in boiling heat transfer coefficient between a heated surface and fluid, which occurs when the phase of the fluid near the heated surface changes from liquid to vapor. For this reason, critical heat flux is an important factor for determining the maximum limit and safety of a boiling heat transfer. Recently, it is reported that the nanofluid is used as a working fluid for the critical heat flux enhancement. However, it could be occurred nano-flouling phenomena on the heat transfer surface due to nanoparticles deposition, when the nanofluid is applied in a heat transfer system. In this study, we experimentally carried out the effects of the nano-fouling phenomena in oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube and oxidized graphene nanofluid systems. It was found that the boiling heat flux decreased by hourly 0.04 and $0.03kW/m^2$, also the boiling heat transfer coefficient decreased by hourly 11.56 and $10.72W/m^2{\cdot}K$, respectively, in the thermal fluid system using oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube or oxidized graphene nanofluid.

  • Our goal is to obtain a better scientific understanding how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the MODIS visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and landuse in study area, we will estimate and present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in Taiwan. To achieve our objective, we used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect. The result shows that the water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower urban surface temperature.

  • This study focuses on the energy partition and heat flux distribution in creep-feed grinding. From the measurements of transient grinding temperature in the workpiece which the thermocouple was embedded, the overall energy partition to the workpiece was estimated with moving heat source theory using the developed scalene triangle heat model. The energy partition was calculated as 3.75% in down grinding smaller than 5.3% in up grinding. Also, the scalene triangle heat model was confirmed as the most optional heat model in correspond to the experimental data. Then, the heat flux distribution was calculated from temperature responses. The heat flux is negative behind the grinding zone where fluid was applied. In this experimental result, the total heat flow to the workpiece per unit width obtained by integrating the positive heat flux was 0,7W/mm for down grinding.

  • Background: A numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the difference between internal and external heat-flux distributions at the reactor vessel wall under in-vessel retention through external reactor vessel cooling (IVR-ERVC). Methods: Total loss of feed water, station blackout, and large break loss of coolant accidents were selected as the severe accident scenarios, and a transient analysis using the element-birth-and-death technique was conducted to reflect the vessel erosion (vessel wall thickness change) effect. Results: It was found that the maximum heat flux at the focusing region was decreased at least 10% when considering the two-dimensional heat conduction at the reactor vessel wall. Conclusion: The results show that a higher thermal margin for the IVR-ERVC strategy can be achieved in the focusing region. In addition, sensitivity studies revealed that the heat flux and reactor vessel thickness are dominantly affected by the molten corium pool formation according to the accident scenario.

  • The volumetric solar receiver is a key element of solar power plants using air. The solar flux distribution inside the receiver should be a priori known for its heat transfer analysis. Previous works have not considered characteristics of the solar flux although they change with radiative properties of receiver materials and receiver geometries. A numerical method, which is based on the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method, was developed in the current work. The solar flux distributions inside multi-channeled volumetric solar receivers were calculated when light is concentrated at the KIER solar furnace. It turned out that 99 percentage of the concentrated solar energy is absorbed within 15mm channel length for the channel radius smaller than 1.5mm. If the concentrated light is assumed to be diffuse, the absorbed solar energy at the channel entrance region is over predicted while the light penetrates more deeply into the channel. Once the presented results are imported into the heat transfer analysis, one could examine effects of material property and geometry of the receiver on air temperature profiles.

  • The behavior of submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) filtration systems utilizing rapid air backpulsing as a cleaning technique to remove reversible foulants was investigated using a genetic algorithm (GA). A customized genetic algorithm with suitable genetic operators was used to generate optimal time profiles. From experiments utilizing short and long periods of forward and reverse filtration, various experimental process parameters were determined. The GA indicated that the optimal values for the net flux fell between 263-270 LMH when the forward filtration time ($t_f$) was 30-37 s and the backward filtration time ($t_b$) was 0.19-0.27 s. The experimental data confirmed the optimal backpulse duration and frequency that maximized the net flux, which represented a four-fold improvement in 24-h backpulsing experiments compared with the absence of backpulsing. Consequently, the identification of a region of feasible parameters and nonlinear flux optimization were both successfully performed by the genetic algorithm, meaning the genetic algorithm-based optimization proved to be useful for solving SMBR flux optimization problems.

  • Water jet impingement cooling has been widely used in a various engineering applications; especially in cooling of hot steel plate of steelmaking processes and heat treatment in hot metals as an effective method of removing high heat flux. The effects of cooling water temperature on water jet impingement cooling are primarily investigated for hot steel plate cooling applications in this study. The local heat flux measurements are introduced by a novel experimental technique that has a function of high-temperature heat flux gauge in which test block assemblies are used to measure the heat flux distribution during water jet impingement cooling. The experiments are performed at fixed flow rate and fixed nozzle-to-target spacing. The results show that effects of cooling water temperature on the characteristics of jet impingement heat transfer are presented for five different water temperatures ranged from 5 to $45^{\circ}C$. The local heat flux curves and heat transfer coefficients are also provided with respect to different boiling regimes.
