In this paper two modes of operating a wound rotor induction machine as a generator at sub-and super-synchronous speeds in wind energy conversion systems are investigated. In the first mode, known as double fed induction generator (DFIG), the rotor circuit is fed from the ac mains via a controlled rectifier and a forced commutated inverter. Adjusting the applied rotor voltage magnitude and phase leads to machine operation as a generator at sub-synchronous speeds. In the second mode, the machine is operated in a slip recovery scheme where the slip energy is fed back to the ac mains via a rectifier and line commutated inverter. This mode is described as double output induction generator (DOIG) leading to increase the efficiency of the wind-to electrical energy conversion system. Simulated results of both modes are presented. Experimental verification of the simulated results are presented for the DOIG mode of operation, showing larger amount of power captured and better power factor when compared to conventional induction generators.
In this paper the operation of a double-fed wound-rotor induction machine, coupled to a wind turbine, as a generator at sub-synchronous speeds is investigated. A novel approach is used in the analysis, namely, the rotor power flow approach. The conditions necessary for operating the machine as a double-fed induction generator (DFIG) are deduced. Formulae describing the factors affecting the range of sub-synchronous speeds within which generation occurs are deduced. The variations in the magnitude and phase angle of the voltage injected to the rotor circuit as the speed of the machine changes to achieve generation at the widest possible sub-synchronous speed range is presented. Also, the effect of the rotor parameters on the generation range is presented. The analysis proved that the generation range could increase from sub-synchronous to super-synchronous speeds, which increases the amount of energy captured by the wind energy conversion system (WECS) as result of utilizing the power available in the wind at low wind speeds.

This paper discusses the thermal effect of the number of permanent-magnet (PM) layers in an outer rotor machine. Depending on the number of axial-layer of PM, the operating temperature is compared analytically and experimentally. The electromagnetic analysis is performed using 3-dimensional time varying finite element method to get the heat sources depending on axial-layered PM models. Then thermal analysis is conducted using the lumped-parameter-thermal-network method for each case. Two outer rotor machines, which have the different number of axial-layer of PM, are manufactured and tested to validate the analysis results.

In this paper, we propose the algorithm using optical flow and machine learning-based segmentation for the 3D conversion of 2D video. For the segmentation allowing the successful 3D conversion, we design a new energy function, where color/texture features are included through machine learning method and the optical flow is also introduced in order to focus on the regions with the motion. The depth map are then calculated according to the optical flow of segmented regions, and left/right images for the 3D conversion are produced. Experiment on various video shows that the proposed method yields the reliable segmentation result and depth map for the 3D conversion of 2D video.

An electrical machine for a high-speed flywheel for energy storage in large hybrid electric vehicles is described. Design choices for the machine are motivated: it is a radial-flux external-rotor permanent-magnet synchronous machine without slots in the stator iron and with a shielding cylinder. An analytical model of the machine is briefly introduced whereafter optimization of the machine is discussed. Three optimization criteria were chosen: (1) torque; (2) total stator losses and (3) induced eddy current loss on the rotor. The influence of the following optimization variables on these criteria is investigated: (1) permanent-magnet array; (2) winding distribution and (3) machine geometry. The paper shows that an analytical model of the machine is very useful in optimization.
A electric power conversion system in a pumped storage power plant is important equipment for converting electric motor kinetic energy into electric power. A electric power conversion monitoring system consists of high voltage thyristor firing equipment, fault detection module, data gathering module, real time data processing equipment and man machine interface system. This paper describes electric power conversion system overview, the developed SFC monitoring system configuration including system characteristics, and successful application result to San-Cheong pumped storage power plant.

This paper presents a regenerative braking control scheme for Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) drive in Electric Vehicles (EVs). The main purpose is to maximize the recovered energy during battery charging by taking into account the nonlinear physical characteristics of the Switched Reluctance Machine. The proposed regenerative braking method employs the back-EMF in the generation process as a complicated position-dependent voltage source. The proposed maximum power recovery (MPR) operation of the regenerative braking is first based on the maximization of the extracted power from the machine and then the maximization of the power transferred to the battery. The maximum power extraction (MPE) from SRM is based on maximizing the energy conversion ratio by the calculation of the optimum PWM switching duty cycle, turn-on, and turn-off angles. By using the impedance matching theorem that allows the maximum power transfer (MPT) of the MPE, the proposed MPR is achieved. The parametric averaged value modeling of the machine phase currents in the chopping control mode is used for MPR realization. By following this model, a nonlinear equivalent input resistance is derived for the battery internal resistance matching. The effectiveness of the proposed regenerative braking method is demonstrated through simulation results and experimental implementation.

This paper deals with a new design method for a small-size rotating machine with high power. In order to achieve high performance, secondary excitation by Nd-Fe-B magnets and the grain oriented electrical steel sheets were selected and a new design using dual rotors is proposed. The outline of the high-performance rotating machine will be presented and the results of the finite element analysis by using this method combined with the E&SS modeling will be shown in the paper.

An accumulator in hydraulic systems stores kinetic energy during braking action, and then that controls hasty surge pressure. An energy recovery system using accumulator seems to be advantageous for ERBS due to its high energy density. This study suggests a method to decide suitable accumulator volume for ERBS. The method is based upon energy conservation between kinetic energy of moving inertia and elastic energy of accumulator. The energy conversion was analyzed and a simple formula was derived. A series of computer simulation was done to verify effectiveness of the formula. The results of the simulation work were compared with those of experiments and these results show that the proposed design is effective for decision accumulator volume in ERBS.
