  • To satisfy the demand of higher cutting performance, mechanical properties with tungsten carbide (WC-Co) tool materials were investigated. Hardness and transverse rupture strength with WC grain size, Co content and density were measured. Compared to H, K, and S manufacture maker as tungsten carbide (WC-Co) tool materials were used for high-speed machining of end-milling operation. The three tungsten carbide (WC-Co) tool materials were evaluated by cutting of STD 11 cold-worked die steel (HRC25) under high-speed cutting condition. Also, tool life was obtained from measuring flank wear by CCD wear measuring system. Tool dynamometer was used to measure cutting force. The cutting force and tool wear are discussed along with tool material characteristics. Consequently, the end-mill of K, H manufacture maker showed higher wear-resistance due to its higher hardness, while the S maker endmill tool showed better performance for high metal removal.

  • The objective of this research is to use an analytical and experimental approach to develop optimal tool geometry for high speed machining. The tool geometry parameters and cutting process have complex relationships. Until now, numerous cutting tests were needed to acquire optimal design of endmill for the purpose of high speed machining, dut to the insufficient knowledge about process in high speed machining. In order to improve the cutting ability of endmill, a model for optimal cutter shape was developed to minimize resultant cutting force by combing cutting force and wear test and surface roughness test from optimized and conventional cutter with the same cutting condition. Using various tools with different geometry, relationships between the tool geometry parameter, rake angle, clearance angle, lengh of cutter have been stuied.

  • The methodology of automatic generation of tool path for rough cutting of a sculptured surface is proposed with the improved contouring method, unequal level line machining. Considering the surface shape and the diameter of the endmill, the distance between level lines is obtained. To improve MMR, initial rough cutting is processed with the large diameter endmill and the remained material is removed by the relatively small diameter endmill. Tool path is generated from the offset curve of respective level line and the interferences between the tool and workpiece are automatically avoided. After generating NC part program, the sculptured surface is machined at the vertical machining center. From the experimental results, total cutting length and machining time are reduced more effectively than conventional contouring methods.

  • High speed machining experiment on the inclined surfaces of hardened mold steel(STAVAX at hardness HRC 53) is carried out using the long-neck type ball endmill. Surface texture and roughness are compared fur various cutting conditions. Tool overhang length greatly affects the roughness of machined surface. It is found that, fur this type of long-neck endmill, the chip load should be carefully selected by reducing either the axial depth of cut or feedrate to avoid tool vibration. Feedrate adjustment is more appropriate method in terms of tool wear.

  • High speed machining one of the most effectiv to improve machining accuracy and product in dies and mould. But a study on this is limited to Alumium, light metal etc. This paper presents machining characteristic of gray cast iron in high speed machining with tungsten carbide endmill. It is suggested to measure sutting force, tool wear, surface roughness, surface shape and select of cptimal cutting condition in the high speed machining of gray cast iron. Performance of high speed machine tool was estimated and the relationship between cutting phenomenon and machinabillity was described.

  • Powder metallurgy(P/M) process has been used for the production of high performance high-speed steels. P/M high speed steel has more uniform and fine microstructure than those of conventional wrought products. Therefore, it offers distinct advantages over conventional tool steels. The superior uniformity of composition and fine microstrucure lead to excellent toughness and less distortion during heat treatment, which in turn can reduce total grinding costs and provides other benefits, such as uniform hardness and increased tool life. From these reasons, milling, hole machining, broaching, and gear manufacturing tools are major applications of P/M high-speed steels. In this research, we evaluated tool wear of flat endmill which is made of P/M high-speed steel from the view point of cutting tool performance.

  • Carbon fiber epoxy composite are widely used in airframe structures, space vehicles, sports equipment, and high speed reciprocating parts for industrial machinery. In this paper, the groove processing characteristics of carbon fiber epoxy com-posite was experimentally investigated in order to study the endmill operation of fiber reinforce epoxy composites. Followings are main finding from the experimental results. First, the cutting and bending force in groove processing of the carbon fiber epoxy composite increased as the spindle speed deceased. They also deceased as the table feed increased. Second, the good cutting status obtained at the entrance of groove while delamination occurred at the exit of groove, Third, the regular high speed steel endmill was not efficient, thus the new endmill such as coated carbide rooter endmill or dia-mode endmill should be used for the effective endmll operation of carbon filber epoxy composites.

  • High speed milling experiment on the hardened mold steel (CALMAX at hardness of HRc 55) is carried out using small diameter ball endmill. Tool lift and wear characteristics under the various machining parameters are investigated. Effect of dynamic runout on the wear of the tool is also studied. For most of the cases, catastrophic chipping of tool edge is not observed and uniformly distributed wear on the flank surface of the tool is obtained. It is found that lower rate of tool wear is obtained as the cutting speed is increased. Also, high pick feed rate is found to be more favorable in terms of tool wear and material removal rate.

  • Presented in this paper is a method to generate round-endmill toolpaths for sculptured surfaces represented as a triangular mesh model. The proposed method is applicable in toolpath generation for ball-endmills and flat-endmills because the round-endmill is a generalized tool in three-axis NC (numerical control) milling. The method uses a wireframe model as the offset model that represents a cutter location surface. Since wireframe models are relatively simple and fast to calculate, the proposed method can process large models and keep high precision. Intersection points with the wireframe offset model and a tool guide plane are calculated, and intersection curves are constructed by tracing the intersection points. The final step of the method is extracting regular curves from the intersection curves including degenerate and self-intersected segments. The proposed method is implemented and tested, and a practical example is presented.
