  • In this paper, we propose a fixed-complexity sphere encoder (FSE) for multi-user multi-input multi-output (MU-MIMO) systems. The proposed FSE accomplishes a scalable tradeoff between performance and complexity. Also, because it has a parallel tree-search structure, the proposed encoder can be easily pipelined, leading to a tremendous reduction in the precoding latency. The complexity of the proposed encoder is also analyzed, and we propose two techniques that reduce it. Simulation and analytical results demonstrate that in a $4{\times}4$ MU-MIMO system, the proposed FSE requires only 11.5% of the computational complexity needed by the conventional QR decomposition with M-algorithm encoder (QRDM-E). Also, the encoding throughput of the proposed encoder is 7.5 times that of the QRDM-E with tolerable degradation in the BER performance, while achieving the optimum diversity order.

  • In this paper, we analyzed statistical characteristics and complexity of HEVC encoder as a leading research of acceleration, optimization and parallelization. Computational complexity of the HEVC encoder is approximately twice the compression performance compared to H.264/AVC. But, the increase of encoder complexity remains a problem to be solved in the future. Before performing the research on acceleration, optimization and parallelization to reduce high complexity of HEVC encoder, we measure the complexity each module for HEVC encoder using it's reference software HM 7.1. We also measured the predicted complexity of fast HEVC encoder software, used in real applications, using HM 7.1 applying fast encoding method. The complexity is measured in terms of the operating cycle of the encoder software under the common test sequences and conditions in the Windows PC environment. In addition, we analyze statistical characteristics of HEVC encoder software according to encoding structures and limitation using coded bitstreams.

  • Distributed video coding is a coding paradigm that allows complexity to be shared between encoder and decoder, in contrast with conventional video coding. We propose that complexity balancing method of encoder/decoder by phase motion estimation algorithm. The encoder performs partial motion estimation. The result of the partial motion estimation is transferred to the decoder, and the decoder performs motion estimation within the narrow range. When the encoder can afford some complexity, complexity balancing is possible. The method proposed is able to know relativity between complexity balancing and coding efficiency. The coding efficiency increase rate by the encoder complexity increases is higher than that by the decoder complexity increases. The proposed method can control the complexity and coding efficiency according to devices' resources and channel conditions.

  • This paper presents a new structure of MPEG-4 AAC encoder. The proposed encoder directly shapes quantization noise distribution according to the energy distribution curve and thereafter performs adjustment of the offset level of the noise distribution to meet the given bit rate. The direct noise shaping and the bit rate matching scheme of the proposed encoder algorithm significantly alleviate the problem of conventional encoder's processing burden related with the employment of the precise psychoacoustic model and iteration intensive quantizer. The encoder algorithm is implemented on ARM processor with fixed-feint arithmetic operations. The audio quality of the implemented system is observed comparable to those of commercially available encoders, white the complexity of the implementation is drastically reduced in comparison to the conventional encoder systems.

  • Portable multi-media products which can service the highest audio-quality by using lossless audio codec has been released and the international lossless codecs, MPEG-4 audio lossless coding(ALS) and MPEG-4 scalable lossless coding(SLS), were standardized by MPEG in 2006. The simple profile of MPEG-4 ALS, it supports up to stereo, was defined by MPEG in 2009. The lossless audio codec should have low-complexity in stereo to be widely used in portable multi-media products. But the previous researches of MPEG-4 ALS have focused on an improvement of compression ratio, a complexity reduction in multi-channels coding, and a selection of linear prediction coefficients(LPCs) order. In this paper, the complexity and compression ratio of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is analyzed in simple profile of MPEG-4 ALS, the method to reduce a complexity of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is proposed. Based on an analysis of complexity of MPEG-4 ALS encoder, the complexity of short-term prediction filter of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is reduced by using the low-complexity filter that is proposed in previous research to reduce the complexity of MPEG-4 ALS decoder. Also, we propose a joint coding decision method, it reduces the complexity and keeps the compression ratio of MPEG-4 ALS encoder. In proposed method, the operation of joint coding is decided based on the relation between cross-correlation of residual and compression ratio of joint coding. The performance of MPEG-4 ALS encoder that has the method and low-complexity filter is evaluated by using the MPEG-4 ALS conformance test file and normal music files. The complexity of MPEG-4 ALS encoder is reduced by about 24% by comparing with MPEG-4 ALS reference encoder, while the compression ratio by the proposed method is comparable to MPEG-4 ALS reference encoder.

  • In this paper, a complexity-balancing algorithm is proposed for distributed video coding based on entropy coding. In order to reduce complexity of DVC-based decoders, the proposed method employs an entropy coder instead of channel coders and the complexity-balancing method is designed to improve RD performance with minimal computational complexity. The proposed method performs motion estimation in the decoder side and transmits the estimated motion vectors to the encoder. The proposed encoder can perform more accurate refinement using the transmitted motion vectors from the decoder. During the motion refinement, the optimal predicted motion vectors are decided by the received motion vector and the predicted motion vectors and complexity load of block is allocated by adjusting the search range based on the difference between the received motion vector and the predicted motion vectors. The computational complexity of the proposed encoder is decreased 11.9% compared to the H.264/AVC encoder and that of the proposed decoder are reduced 99% compared to the conventional DVC decoder.

  • In this paper, a fast algorithm of discrete cosine transform-based interpolation filter (DCT-IF) for HEVC (high efficiency video coding) encoder is proposed. DCT-IF filter accounts for around 30% of encoder complexity, according to the computational complexity analysis with the HEVC reference software. In this work, the proposed DCT-IF is optimized by applying frame-level interpolation, SIMD optimization, and task-level parallelization via OpenMP on a developed C-based HEVC encoder. Performance analysis is conducted by measuring speed-up factor of the proposed optimization technique on the developed encoder. The results show that speed-up factors by frame-level interpolation, SIMD, and OpenMP are approximately 38-46, 3.6-4.4, and 3.0-3.7, respectively. In the end, we achieved the speed-up factor of 498.4 with the proposed fast algorithm.

  • This paper proposes the coding method to predict the split structure of LCU in the current frame on the basis of the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. HEVC encoder determines split structure according to image characteristics in LCU which is an basic element of CU. The split structure of the current LCU is very similar to the split structure of collocated LCU in the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. Thus, this paper proposes the method to reduce the encoder computational complexity by predicting split structure of the current LCU on the basis of that of collocated LCU in the reference frame or temporally-previous frame. And it also proposes the method to reduce the BD-Bitrate by coding after the prediction of the CU split information. The simulation results of changing only encoder showed that the mean of encoder computational complexity was lower by 21.3%, the decoder computational complexity was negligible change and the BD-Bitrate increase by the maximum of 0.6%. Also, the method changing encoder, bitstream, and decoder improves the mean of encoder computational complexity was lower by 22%, the decoder computational complexity was negligible change and the BD-Bitrate is improved to the maximum of 0.3%. When compared with the conventional method, indicating that the proposed method is superior.
