  • The COVID-19 pandemic is having an adverse impact on Bangladesh's economy by affecting millions of people's life and hampering their income sources. The outbreak of COVID-19 has created more pressure on the labor market. The pandemic reduces employment opportunities as most of the companies have stopped their recruitment process to cut their operational costs, which increases the rate of graduate unemployment in Bangladesh. Hence, this study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on graduate employability in Bangladesh that adversely affects the income of families and eventually the nation's economy. A literature review has been conducted from secondary sources to evaluate the impact, which shows that the rate of graduate unemployment increased from 47% to 58% in 2020 with an expected annual loss estimated at $53 million. Findings also reveal that the prime reasons for graduate employability are low demand and huge supply of graduates in the labor market, lack of professional skills of graduates, ineffective education system, etc. The study suggests that the government of Bangladesh should develop some policies to overcome this problem such as ensuring employment subsidies, implementing skills development programs, improving labor market flexibility, initiating credit programs for generating employment, and developing entrepreneurial ecosystems in Bangladesh.

  • Using the 2017 and 2019 Survey on Immigrants' Living Conditions and Labour Force, we examine how the job training programs in Korea affect immigrants' labor market outcomes by applying the propensity score matching method. The results show that job training programs increase the probability of being employed by 6.4 percentage points and positively affect monthly wages. There is significant heterogeneity in the effects of job training effects across visa categories. For immigrants with work visas, the effect on the employment rate is relatively small, while the wage effect is considerably large. On the other hand, we do not find a positive wage effect for marriage migrants. Both the employment rate and the monthly wage increased through job training for permanent residents.

However, domestic SW companies are having difficulties in not properly recognizing the value of SW products. Among many related issues, commercial SW maintenance-related issues are representative, and the main problem is the difference in the maintenance fee rates between domestic and foreign SW. In this study, the expected job creation effect when the SW maintenance rate is raised was analyzed using data related to the SW industry and commercial software. As a result of the analysis, the amount required to raise the commercial SW maintenance rate by 1% is 162 billion won. If all of these are used for employment, the expected new job creation effect is 3,240 jobs per year, and 15,451 jobs are created per year when calculated and estimated as the effect of increasing sales through the employment inducement coefficient. In addition, the amount required to raise the current average maintenance rate of 11.1% to 15% is 631.9 billion won, and it was possible to estimate the effect of creating jobs for 12,648 people based on the simple average wage and 60,259 people from the sales increase effect.
