Changing Industrial Structure and Employment of Older Workers (산업구조의 변화와 고령인력의 고용)

  • This article investigates the patterns of workforce aging in each industry, and examines how changing industrial structure affected the labor-market demand for and employment security of older workers in Korea. The relative size of the industries that are major employers of older workers has relatively declined since 2001, resulting in a decrease in labor-market demand for aged persons. Changes in industrial structure that occurred during the last decade have also brought an overall deterioration in the extent of employment security of older workers. These results suggest that the economic environment surrounding policies aimed at encouraging the employment of older workers is not entirely favorable. This paper also points out that policy makers need to consider that employment conditions of older workers are highly heterogenous across industries.

Determination of Similar Exposure Groups Using Weekday Time Activity Patterns of Urban Populations (평일 시간활동패턴을 활용한 도시 인구의 유사노출집단 분류)

  • Objectives: Determining the time activity patterns of urban populations is critical when performing an exposure assessment. The purposes of this study were to classify urban populations in Korea by their time activity patterns and to identify factors that influence these patterns. Methods: The time activity patterns of 31,634 and 20,263 individuals were obtained from two national databases collected in 2004 and 2009, respectively. The two largest metropolitan cities in Korea, Seoul and Busan, were selected for this analysis. For each city, multivariate linear regressions were performed to determine factors affecting the time spent in a residence and in transit. We also used cluster analysis to classify each urban population by activity pattern. Results: Nine distinctive activity patterns were identified in the Seoul and Busan populations, respectively, and the resulting classified population groups had specific characteristics. The identified patterns were similar for Seoul and Busan. The most significant factors affecting time spent in a residence were employment status, age, marriage status, education, and gender. Gender, education, employment status, and monthly income were significant factors affecting time spent in transit. Conclusion: These results indicate that, in addition to region, exposure scientists in Korea should consider classifying populations based on age, gender, and occupation.

A Qualitative Study on the Daily Help Substitution for the Household Work (가사도우미에 의한 가사노동대체, 문화기술적 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this ethnography is to describe and analyze the employment and substitutional use of daily help for the household work. Ten housewives and one educator of daily help from Gwangju City were interviewed with an unstructured questionnaire. They experience many difficulties from this daily help employment and use, even though they gain some basic help from their service. The diversity of the routes to seek out this daily help means that there is no proper route. And the daily help's sudden quit causes many realistic and psychological problems. Frequent disagreement between the user's demand and help's implement comes from communication failure. Three different management patterns of daily help were issued ; 'conservative-dominant', 'rational-mandatory', 'powerless-dependent'.

Structural Change and Employment in Manufacturing Sector -Polarization by Firm Size- (제조업 고용구조변화의 특징 분석)

  • This paper presents the relationship between the pace of structural change and the magnitude of employment growth in the manufacturing sector in OECD countries. To measure the pace of structural change, the compositional change index in value-added in manufacturing sector is introduced. For mid to long-term there seems to be a positive relationship between the pace of structural change and the magnitude of employment growth. In those countries with higher value of the compositional index, the employment growth in manufacturing sector was generally higher. To analyse the characteristics of structural change in manufacturing sector, this paper classifies manufacturing industries into groups: one based on technology, one on orientation, one on wages and one on skills. The international comparison of manufacturing sector's employment patterns based on above four classifications are presented. International comparison suggests that Korean manufacturing sector move into jobs with more skills and knowledge The structural change of SMEs and large firms are compared based on above four classification methods. It is shown that SMEs' employment in low value sectors, that is low-technology, labor-intensive, tow-wage, and unskilled sectors, have risen faster than SMEs' employment in high-technology, science-based, high-wage and skilled sectors. Large firms' employment have been mainly increased in high value sectors. However, the employment growth of both large and small firms have been concentrated on production worker-intensively-using sectors, i.e. unskilled sectors. This widened the wage differential of production workers by firm sizes and concurrently led to severe shortage of production workers for SMEs, which has little ability to pay high wage to production workers because they usually belong to low-wage sectors. Korea need to push SMEs forward to high value sectors. The premise of that is, however, to pull large firms out of production worker-intensively-using sectors.

A Study of Children's Attachment to Their Mothers in middle Childhood (아동기 애착에 관한 일 연구)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the children's attachment patterns and the effects of the family-related variables. The interview method was used to know the children's attachment patterns and the questionnaire was used to collect the family-related variables. The subjects were 272 elementary school children ranged 1st grade to 3rd grade in Kwangju. The results were as follows: 1. In the contexts of separation from mother, two major patterns of children's attachment appeared : patterns showed much anxious feeling but accepted the separation; patterns showed much anxious feeling and they rejected the separation. These two patterns were consisted in anxious feeling but inconsisted in responses. 2. Children showed significant differences in their attachment patterns to their mother's early attachment patterns to their mothers, maternal employment, SES of the family, and sex of the child were not found.

  • Analyzing the change in consumption pattern depending on the employment of married women, the spendings in transportation, education, and dining out are increased. The change in consumption patterns depending on the increase of dual-income family can be seen as the increased demand of market service that replaces the household production service. Especially when the employment of married woman from high income class(highly educated, middle-class, upper-class) is increased, they tend to get employed in more professional and highly skilled industries, which leads to higher effect on employment induction, and consequently increasing the labor demand for low-skilled service industry.

  • The employment permit system for foreigners, which stresses introduction of foreign work force in a legal manner rather than in the position of being trainees, is anticipated to efficiently improve introduction and the overall management system of foreign work force and related difficulties such as illegal alien problems, absurdity on sending laborers overseas. In this paper, a prospective model of supply and demand of work force has been developed basing on various categories of industries and patterns about nationally practical foreign employees to look over efficient supply and demand of work force suiting employment of foreigner among foreign work force policies. To propose the prospective model, we have derived industry- and pattern-related matrixes of foreign laborers basing on Inter-Industry Analysis Method put forth by Professor Leontiyef in 1930, and through the derived matrix assessed repercussions concerning overall domestic industries and foreigner types and decided yearly weight; the capacity of supply and demand of foreign laborers can be compared through proposed statistical estimation and government estimation by combining the determined weight with yearly incomes of foreign laborers. This paper has thoroughly considered the particularity of our employment permit system for foreigners and applied the Weibull distribution and incorporated the dependence of foreign laborers during the limited period of 3 years to the industry relation analysis, ultimately proposing an efficient supply and demand method about domestic foreign work force.

  • This paper illustrates key features of an enterprise employment simulation which integrates a system dynamic feedback model with a cost-effectiveness optimisation capability utilising genetic algorithms. Its core is a 3-dimensional array structure tracking staff numbers by rank, by time-in-rank, by years-of-service. The resultant model, which could readily be adapted to non-Defence use, can identify, given user specification of any mix of employment rules, the likely patterns of employment behaviour including: resultant time-in-rank and years-of-service profiles; ability of a Unit to fill all positions to target strength; ability to fill promotional positions within normal rules for substantive promotion; need to fill promotional positions using rules for temporary promotion or transfer from outside; necessary recruitment pattern to sustain target strength.

Labor Market Dynamics in the Self-employed Sector in Korea (자영업부문(自營業部門)을 중심(中心)으로 한 노동력(勞動力)의 유동(流動))

  • This paper empirically analyzes the behavioral patterns of the labor flows surrounding self-employment. One of the findings is that, while a substantial portion of the labor flows into (and from) the self-employment sector is a movement from (and into) the non-employment, such flows are largely confined to a relatively small group of marginal workers. Still, the share of those marginal workers among the self-employed has declined steadily at least until the outburst of the financial crisis in 1997, evidencing that the job stability has been increased in this sector. On the other hand, the expected duration of self-employment has shown a downward trend up until 1990 but has increased since then. Such a trend reversal is also observed in the proportion of the labor force self-employed, indicating that the former is at least partly responsible for the latter.

Mother Adolescent Communication Patterns' and Ego-Identity Development in Adolescents (모-자녀간의 의사소통유형과 청소년의 자아정체감에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of the present study to investigate relationships among family background factors (i. e. adolescents' sex, mother's educational level and employment status. family's SES, and family types), mother-adolescent communication patterns and ego-identity development of adolescents. The subjects were 169 mother-adolescent dyads living in Seoul. Statistical methods used for the data analysis were frequencies, percentiles, Mean, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, Pearson's product-moment correlation, regression analysis, ANCOVA, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. The results were as follows: (1) Significant differences of the adolescents were between family's SES and open communication patterns, between family types and problematic communication patterns. (2) Significant differences of the mothers were between family's SES and open communication patterns, and among family's SES, mother's educational level and problematic communication patterns. (3) There were significant differences in ego-identity of adolescents according to family's SES. (4) There were significant relationships between mother-adolescent communication patterns and the ego-identity development of adolescents. (5) The most influential variable explaining adolescents' ego-identity development was found to be problematic communication patterns perceived by adolescents. Family background factors and mother's communication patterns were not found to have significant effects.
