Construction of Korean Space Weather Prediction Center: Storm Prediction Model

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is developing an empirical model for Korean Space Weather Prediction Center (KSWPC). This model predicts the geomagnetic storm strength (Dst minimum) by using only CME parameters, such as the source location (L), speed (V), earthward direction (D), and magnetic field orientation of an overlaying potential field at CME source region. To derive an empirical formula, we considered that (1) the direction parameter has best correlation with the storm strength (2) west $15^{\circ}$ offset from the central meridian gives best correlation between the source location and the storm strength (3) consideration of two groups of CMEs according to their magnetic field orientation (southward or northward) provide better forecast. In this talk, we introduce current status of the empirical storm prediction model development.

Reciprocal Effect of the Factors Influencing the Satisfaction of IS Users (정보시스템의 사용자 만족에 영향을 주는 요인의 상호작용효과)

  • This study is an empirical research in order to clarify whether or not the correlation between the satisfaction of users that is the performance measurement factor and the following three:(1) the attitude of users as an individual characteristic, (2) the supports of organization as an organizational characteristic, (3) the routine degree of jobs as an job characteristic, is the same as the previous study results. In addition, another empirical research was done to make clear how organizational supports and routine degree change the attitude and satisfaction of users. This study put a particular emphasis on the moderating effect because the study of this issue has not been done in any previous research. 38 corporations, whose computerization has already been made to some extent and who are listed on the stock exchange market as a leader group, was selected for research, given some hypotheses on the basis of theoretical studies. As results of this empirical study, first, the supports of organization and the routine degree of jobs changed the attitude of users, which was the same as the previous studies. Moreover, the supports of organization, the routine degree of jobs and the attitude of users had an influence on the satisfaction of users. Second, in respect of the correlation between the attitude of users and the satisfaction of users, the routine degree of jobs showed a moderating effect, but the organization supports did not show any moderating effect.

Implementation of a new empirical model of steam condensation for the passive containment cooling system into MARS-KS code: Application to containment transient analysis

  • For the Korean design of the PCCS (passive containment cooling system) in an innovative PWR, the overall thermal resistance around a condenser tube is dominated by the heat transfer coefficient of steam condensation on the exterior surface. It has been reported, however, that the calculated heat transfer coefficients by thermal-hydraulic system codes were much lower than measured data in separate effect tests. In this study, a new empirical model of steam condensation in the presence of a noncondensable gas was implemented into the MARS-KS 1.4 code to replace the conventional Colburn-Hougen model. The selected correlation had been developed from condensation test data obtained at the JERICHO (JNU Experimental Rig for Investigation of Condensation Heat transfer On tube) facility, and considered the effect of the Grashof number for naturally circulating gas mixture and the curvature of the condenser tube. The modified MARS-KS code was applied to simulate the transient response of the containment equipped with the PCCS to the large-break loss-of-coolant accident. The heat removal performances of the PCCS and corresponding evolution of the containment pressure were compared to those calculated via the original model. Various thermal-hydraulic parameters associated with the natural circulation operation through the heat transport circuit were also investigated.

Effect of forearm length applied on empirical models of maximum endurance time during isometric elbow flexion (등척성 팔굽 굽힘시 최대근지구력시간의 실증적 모델에 적용한 전완길이의 영향)

  • During isometric elbow flexion, forearm length should be an important factor to determine not only joint torque but also maximum endurance time (MET), when the forearm is perpendicular to the direction of the force. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of forearm length as an additional factor on empirical models of MET such as an exponential model and a power model during isometric elbow flexion. Thirty volunteers participated in our experiment to measure factor variables such as circumferences and lengths of their upper and lower arms. Their METs were measured according to the percent of maximum voluntary contraction intensity (%MVC). For the multiple linear regression model of ln(MET) using these measurements, significant variables could be observed in %MVC and forearm lengths (P<0.05). The empirical models were assessed by these models using forearm length as the additional factor. Mean absolute deviations (MAD) between the measured METs amd the two empirical models were about 19.4 [s], but MAD using models applied forearm lengths were reduced to about 16.2 [s]. The correlation coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients were about 0.87, but those applied forearm lengths were increased to about 0.91. These results demonstrated that forearm length was a significant additional factor to the empirical model.

  • In this study, a variety of welding experiments were carried out to optimize root-pass welding process using GMA process. Based on the experimental results, optimal welding conditions were selected after analyzing correlation between welding parameters and back-bead geometry. Then, effectiveness of empirical models developed was compared and analyzed, and optimized empirical models were finally developed for predicting back-bead by analyzing the main effect of each factor which affects back-bead geometry and their influence on interaction. Also, functions proper for expressing the surface of back-bead were selected using diverse quadratic functions, and back-bead geometry was visualized using empirical models developed and quadratic functions.

Predicting the Compressive Strength of Thin-walled Composite Structure (복합재 박막 구조물의 압축강도 예측)

  • The initial buckling of thin walled structures does not result in immediate failure. This post buckling capability is used to achieve light weight design, and final failure of thin walled structure is called crippling. To predict the failure load, empirical methods are often used for thin walled structures in design stage. But empirical method accuracy depend on geometry. In this study, experimental, empirical and numerical study of the crippling behavior of I-section beam made of carbon-epoxy are performed. The progressive failure analysis model to simulate the crippling failure is evaluated using the test results. In this study, commercial software LS-DYNA is utilized to compute the collapse load of composite specimen. Six kinds of specimens were tested in axial compression where correlation between analytical and experimental results has performed. From the results, we have partially conclude that the flange width-to-thickness ratio is found to influence the accuracy of empirical and numerical method.

An Empirical Study on the Applicability of Growth-share Matrix in the Construction Industry

  • The growth-share matrix is a portfolio planning tool developed by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to assist competitive positioning in the international market including those in the construction industry. This matrix is helpful in balancing the firm's cash-flow, and it can suggest strategic directions for each business unit. However, its effectiveness and applicability have long been debated in the academic field due to the complex and unique industrial context of construction. To solve the dispute, this research clarifies the applicability of theories underlying the growth-share matrix to the construction industry. Empirical research based on actual financial data of Korean construction firms is adopted for the statistical analysis including one-way analysis of variance and correlation analysis. The results of this research show that empirical findings on the relationship between performance variables. In this context, this research can provide important insights on the concept of portfolio management in the construction industry.

  • The U solubility in the Zircaloy melt including the other investigators' result was investigated in a range of reaction temperatures from 2223k to 2473k and for the mole ratios of UO$_2$ crucible/Zircaloy-4 melt(subsequently abbreviated as UO$_2$/Zry) from 2.4 to 18.2, The U solubility in the melt increased with increasing reaction temperature and with decreasing the mole ratio of UO$_2$/Zry. An empirical correlation was obtained as functions of UO$_2$/Zry mole ratio and reaction temperature including other investigators' results. The experimental results with use of internally heated fuel element simulators were analyzed by the empirical correlation from UO$_2$ crucible experiments.

The Relationship between NDVI and Forest Leaf Area Index in MODIS Land Product

  • NDVI has been used to estimate several ecological variables including leaf area index (LAI). Global MODIS LAI data are partially produced by empirical model that is based on the assumption of high correlation between NDVI and LAI. This study attempts to evaluate the MODIS empirical model by comparing with the result obtained from field LAI measurement and Landsat ETM+ reflectance. MODIS LAI product and ancillary data were analyzed over a small forest watershed near the Seoul metropolitan area. The relationship between NDVI of ETM+ and field measured LAI did not correspond to MODIS LAI estimation. Since the study area is mostly covered by very dense and fully closed forest, the correlation between NDVI and LAI might not be high. Although MODIS LAI product has great potential for global environment studies, it needs to be cautious to use them in regional and local area in particular for the forest of dense canopy situation.

  • Shear modulus has been recognized as one of the important soil properties in dynamic analysis of ground and can be calculated from in situ measurement of shear wave velocity. Field seismic tests are the most accurate but expensive methods to investigate dynamic ground characteristics. Due to that reason, empirical equations for estimating the shear wave velocity are widely used rather than conducting in-situ tests. The most common equations are based on the N value obtained in conjuctions with a standard penetration test. In this paper, the field datas of standard penetration test and suspension PS logging measured in 126 sites of Korea were summarized and the correlation equations between N value and shear wave velocity are suggested.
