BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Setting healthful beverage expectations, making calcium-rich foods and beverages (CRF/B) available, and role modeling are parenting practices promoting calcium intake among early adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate emotion-based messages designed to motivate parents of early adolescents to perform these practices. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Emotion-based messages were developed for each parenting practice and tested in 35 parents from 5 states. Findings were used to modify messages and develop a survey administered via Amazon MechanicalTurk to a convenience sample of Asian (n = 166) and Hispanic (n = 184) parents of children 10-13 years. Main outcome measures were message comprehension, motivation, relevance, acceptability, and novelty. Engagement in the parenting practices was also assessed. RESULTS: Message comprehension was acceptable for the majority of parents. Most also agreed that messages were motivational (setting healthful beverage expectations (69.0%), making CRF/B available (67.4%), and role modeling (80.0%)), relevant and acceptable. About 30-50% indicated they had not seen the information before. Many parents indicated they were already engaging in the practices (> 70%). No racial/ethnic differences were observed for responses to messages or engaging in parenting practices. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that emotion-based messages designed to motivate parents to engage in parenting practices that promote calcium intake among early adolescents were motivating, relevant, and acceptable.
This study has observed the influence of green advertisemen on the attitude of consumers in relation to its message effect. The analysis has been conducted in the perpective of awareness-emotion -behavior targeting housewives based on the message structure of the advertisement(conclusion omission type/ conclusion offer type). Results of the analysis are as follows : 1) Green advertisement was more effective for the attitude toward advertisement and products than non-green advertisement and in the case of high involvement the conclusion omission message was more effective than the conclusion offer message. 2) Green advertisement was more effective also for the emotion side than non-green advertisement and the conclusion omission message was found more effective than the conclusion offer message. 3) Green advertisement was found more effective for purchasing activities than non-green advertisement and the conclusion omission message was found more effective than the conclusion offer message in the case of high involvement. 4) In case of the conclusion offer type structure of green advertisement the awareness side influenced purchasing activities and in case of the conclusion omission type structure of green advertisement the emotion side influenced purchasing activities. Besides that in case of the conclusion offer type structure of non-green advertisement both the awareness and emotion sides were found to influence purchasing activities. No difference was found in the conclusion omission type structure of non-green advertisement.
A way to increase effectiveness of charitable donation ads is to activate or magnify emotional experiences (e.g., sympathy, empathy, psychological distress) among target audience. Past studies suggest that mental imagery and attention, which activate or magnify emotional experiences, can be influenced by verbal message attributes (i.e., message concreteness and valence) of charitable donation advertisements. Based on the previous research, the study built a conceptual framework for processing of charitable donation advertising: message concreteness and valence ${\rightarrow}$ mental imagery and attention ${\rightarrow}$ emotional experiences ${\rightarrow}$ donation intention. To verify the framework, the study investigated on the influence of message concreteness and valence on mental imagery and attention through assessing ERP responses. It also examined how message concreteness and valence have an effect on the intent to donate through measuring the amount of donation. The study revealed that concrete message activated mental imagery more than abstract message whereas negative message enhanced attentional level more than positive message. Compared to the other conditions, when the message was concrete and negative, the amount of donation was significantly large.
It is a well-established theory that emotion is influential in cognitive processing. Extensive prior research on emotion has shown that emotional factors, such as affect, mood, and feeling, play as information indicating whether he or she has enough knowledge. Most of their findings focused on the effect of emotional valence (i.g., one's subjective positivity or negativity related with the emotion). Recently, several studies on emotion suggest that there is another dimension of emotion, which affects the type of cognitive processing. The studies argue that emotional certainty facilitates heuristic processing, whereas emotional uncertainty promotes systematic processing. Based on the findings, current study examines the effect of certainty on attitudes and recall. Specifically, the authors investigate the effect of certainty on how much effort individuals use to process advertising information and how certainty affects attitude formation toward the advertised product. The authors also focus on recall to clarify the working mechanism of certainty on attitudes, because recall performance reflects the depth of information processing. Based on previous findings, the authors hypothesize that uncertainty (vs. certainty) leads to more favorable attitudes as well as better recall, and conduct an experiment using a fictitious advertisement with 218 participants. The results confirm the predicted effects of certainty only on attitudes not recall. A possible explanation of this discrepancy between attitudes and recall lies in the measurement method, unaided recall. To rule out this possibility, the authors perform an additional analysis with the participants who recall any correct information of the target advertisement. The results show certainty has a negative effect on both attitudes and recall. A bootstrapping test reveals that recall mediates the effect of certainty on attitudes. This result confirms that certainty decreases elaboration, which in turn leads to less favorable attitudes relative to uncertainty. Additionally, our data shows the association among certainty, recall, and attitudes by showing the indirect effect of certainty on attitudes via recall. This research encourages practitioners in the field to emphasize that they should focus on target audiences' emotional certainty before they provide the persuasive message, by showing that uncertainty promotes effortful processing, which in turn leads to better memory and more favorable attitudes.

This paper introduces a novel concept of 'Emotional Communication' for future smart phone. While traditional information based communication technologies focus on how to precisely transmit the content of message, emotional communication is intended to support and augment social relationship among people and to comfort the user to be happy. In this paper, we propose future communication services and core technologies which can estimate emotional desire of users and respond to the desire to be happy with connectedness and consolation from peoples. Firstly, we introduce emotion recognition techniques to estimate emotional desire of users. At second, the emotional responding services are categorized to four parts and the details are shown. Lastly we propose the process to implement emotional communication system and the main techniques to fulfill the system requirements for future smart-phone services.
Understanding dialogue participant's emotion is important as well as decoding the explicit message in human communication. It is well known that non-verbal elements are more suitable for conveying speaker's emotions than verbal elements. Written texts, however, contain a variety of linguistic units that express emotions. This study aims at analyzing components for constructing an emotion ontology, that provides us with numerous applications in Human Language Technology. A majority of the previous work in text-based emotion processing focused on the classification of emotions, the construction of a dictionary describing emotion, and the retrieval of those lexica in texts through keyword spotting and/or syntactic parsing techniques. The retrieved or computed emotions based on that process did not show good results in terms of accuracy. Thus, more sophisticate components analysis is proposed and the linguistic factors are introduced in this study. (1) 5 linguistic types of emotion expressions are differentiated in terms of target (verbal/non-verbal) and the method (expressive/descriptive/iconic). The correlations among them as well as their correlation with the non-verbal expressive type are also determined. This characteristic is expected to guarantees more adaptability to our ontology in multi-modal environments. (2) As emotion-related components, this study proposes 24 emotion types, the 5-scale intensity (-2~+2), and the 3-scale polarity (positive/negative/neutral) which can describe a variety of emotions in more detail and in standardized way. (3) We introduce verbal expression-related components, such as 'experiencer', 'description target', 'description method' and 'linguistic features', which can classify and tag appropriately verbal expressions of emotions. (4) Adopting the linguistic tag sets proposed by ISO and TEI and providing the mapping table between our classification of emotions and Plutchik's, our ontology can be easily employed for multilingual processing.
Consumers of web novels read online reviews in order to decrease uncertainty when purchasing a web novel. This study examines the types of messages (factual or evaluative) that consumers find more useful and verifies the moderating effect of individual analytical decision-making style levels on differences in usefulness evaluation. Based on the tendency to acquire objective information, the usefulness of factual online reviews was expected to be higher in the context of buying experience goods, such as a web novel. Levels of analytical decision-making styles, which were classified based on individual perception, are also expected to affect the usefulness evaluation of reviews. Experiments 1 and 2 were repeatedly conducted to examine whether consumers think factual reviews are more useful than evaluative reviews. In particular, Experiment 2 was conducted to simulate the circumstance of selecting a romance web novel and demonstrated that reviews have a significant effect on messages and decision-making styles. The interaction effect between analytical decision-making style levels and review message types was also confirmed in Experiment 2. The results of this study can help researchers and marketers comprehend the behavioral patterns of web novel readers when evaluating reviews and consuming experience goods.

Emoticons perform an important role as an enhancement to written communication, in areas such as Windows Live Messenger instant messaging, e-mails, mobile Short Message Services (SMS), and others. Emoticons are graphic images used in communications to indicate the feelings of people exchanging messages via mobile technology. In this research, the perceived usefulness of the emoticon in mobile phone text messages is verified with consumers using the five construct model of Huang. A K-means clustering technique for separating three groups based on levels of perceived usefulness of mobile emoticons is used with a structural equation model test using Smart PLS 2.0, and the bootstrap re-sampling procedure. We analyzed relationships among use of emoticons, enjoyment, interaction, information richness, and perceived usefulness. The results show there are relationships among use of emoticons, enjoyment, interaction, perceived usefulness, and information richness, however enjoyment of emoticons did not significantly affect the perceived usefulness of messages with emoticons alone. The results suggest emoticons have different affects on emotion in both mobile, and Messenger contexts. Our study did not consider more detailed media properties, and thus more studies are needed. Our research results contribute to mobile communication activation, provides companies with an understanding of key characteristics of consumers who use emoticons, and provides useful implications for improving management and marketing strategies.
Online communities are an important source of electronic-word-of-mouth (eWOM), however few studies have examined these types of messages within the Middle Eastern context. This study focuses on Kuwaiti women as members of an online beauty forum; previous work has suggested a mediating effect of gender with women being more likely to trust and follow-up word-of-mouth with a purchase. A conceptual model, based on existing theoretical contributions, provides the basis of a coding framework for the message characteristics that influence members' eWOM adoption. A sub-set of the analysis is presented: 218 threads (1820 messages, coded into 6702 units) illustrating cases where eWOM was adopted and thereby demonstrating continuance intention with members returning to the forum. Content analysis revealed the prevalence of emotional aspects in messages, coded into a new category of 'community bonding'. Findings show that emotion expressed in messages is as influential and important as cognitive aspects of argument quality.

The opinion mining technique which analogize significant information from SNS message is increasingly important because opinions communicated through SNS are increasing. This paper propose SEIAS(SNS Emotional Information Analysis Strategy) based on opinion mining that analogize emotional information from SNS setting a different weight according to position of antonym and adverb. Firstly, the proposed SEIAS constructs a emotion dictionary for opinion mining analysis, Secondly, it collects SNS data on real time, compare it with emotion dictionary and calculates opinion value of SNS data. Specially, it increases the precision of opinion analysis result compared to the existing SO-PMI because it sets up the different value according to the position of antonym and adverb when it calculates the opinion value of data.
