Since affective computing has been introduced in 90s, affect recognition technology has achieved substantial progress recently. However, the application of user emotion recognition into software user interface is in its early stages. In this paper, we describe a new approach for developing mobile user interface which could react differently depending on user emotion states. First, an emotion reaction model is presented which determines user interface reactions for each emotional state. We introduce a pair of mappings from user states to different user interface versions. The reacting versions are implemented by a set of variations for a view. Further, we present an authoring framework to help developers/designers to create emotion-aware reactions based on the proposed emotion reaction model. The authoring framework is necessary to alleviate the burden of creating and handling multi versions for views at the development process. A prototype implementation is presented as an extension of the existing authoring tool DAT4UX. Moreover, a proof-of-concept application featuring an emotion-aware interface is developed using the tool.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of and recent trends in science education research on emotion and explore the direction of future development. A comprehensive review of literature was conducted, and the results were organized according to research questions. Science education research on emotion began in the state of confusion because a number of concepts coexisted and overlapped in the concept of affect. More systematic approaches were then used when science-related attitudes were divided into the two categories of scientific attitudes and attitudes toward science. The research continued to study on positive and negative emotions relevant to science learning. However, the complex relationship between cognition and emotion and the limitation of the dichotomy dealing with emotions as external factors influencing student learning were revealed. By contrast, the recent research on epistemic emotions were based on the new perspective that scientific practices are accompanied with emotions and that cognition and emotion are integrated into the practices, influencing each other. Therefore, research should be carried out in ways that can help science educators understand a variety of emotions emerging in learning science through scientific practices and respond appropriately to even negative emotions of students.
Mind reading is an essential part of normal social functioning and empathy plays a key role in social understanding. This study investigated how individual differences can have an effect on reading emotions in facial expressions, focusing on empathizing and systemizing. Two experiments were conducted. In study 1, participants performed emotion recognition test using facial expressions to investigate how emotion recognition can be different as empathy-systemizing type, facial areas, and emotion type. Study 2 examined how emotion recognition can be different as empathy-systemizing type, facial areas, and emotion type. An emotion discrimination test was used instead, with every other condition the same as in studies 1. Results from study 2 showed mostly same results as study 1: there were significant differences among facial areas and emotion type and also have an interaction effect between facial areas and emotion type. On the other hand, there was an interaction effect between empathy-systemizing type and emotion type in study 2. That is, how much people empathize and systemize can make difference in emotional discrimination. These results suggested that the empathy-systemizing type was more appropriate to explain emotion discrimination than emotion recognition.
Although personality and culture have been employed as independent predictors of emotion regulation, less is known about the interplay between them. Thus, the present study tests their interaction by focusing on the match between personality (public self-consciousness) and culture (valuing independence vs. interdependence) in modulating an emotion regulation strategy, namely, emotion suppression, on Facebook. Furthermore, relationship concern related to the expression of positive and negative emotions on Facebook is explored as a potential underlying mechanism. An online survey on Facebook users in the United States (n = 320) and South Korea (n = 336) was conducted through two professional survey companies. The results revealed that the positive association between public self-consciousness and emotion suppression was stronger among respondents who value interdependence (vs. independence), which led to a significant interaction between the two predictors. Furthermore, public self-consciousness was associated with emotion suppression through relationship concern for the expression of positive, but not negative, emotions. Furthermore, this mediated relationship was stronger among respondents who value interdependence (vs. independence). Lastly, the study discussed the importance of exploring the interplay between personality and culture and the implication of dialectic emotions.
Despite the huge potential of the practical application of emotion recognition technologies, the enhancement of the technologies still remains a challenge mainly due to the difficulty of recognizing emotion. Although not perfect, human emotions can be recognized through human images and sounds. Emotion recognition technologies have been researched by extensive studies that include image-based recognition studies, sound-based studies, and both image and sound-based studies. Studies on emotion recognition through facial expression detection are especially effective as emotions are primarily expressed in human face. However, differences in user environment and their familiarity with the technologies may cause significant disparities and errors. In order to enhance the accuracy of real-time emotion recognition, it is crucial to note a mechanism of understanding and analyzing users' personality traits that contribute to the improvement of emotion recognition. This study focuses on analyzing users' personality traits and its application in the emotion recognition system to reduce errors in emotion recognition through facial expression detection and improve the accuracy of the results. In particular, the study offers a practical solution to users with subtle facial expressions or low degree of emotion expression by providing an enhanced emotion recognition function.

Human emotion has been tried to be recognized by physiological measurements in developing emotion machine enabling to understand and react to user's emotion. This study is to find the time-dependent physiological measurements and their variation characteristics for discriminating emotions according to dimensional emotion model. Ten university students were asked to watch sixteen prepared images to evoke different emotions. Their subjective emotions and autonomic nervous responses such as ECG (electrocardiogram), PPG (photoplethysmogram), GSR (Galvanic skin response), RSP (respiration), and SKT(skin temperature) were measured during experiment. And these responses were analyzed into HR(Heart Rate), Respiration Rate, GSR amplitude average, SKT amplitude average, PPG amplitude, and PTT(Pulse Transition Time). TDPs(Time dependent parameters) defined as the delay, the activation, the half recovery and the full recovery of respective physiological signal in this study have been determined and statistically compared between variations from different emotions. The significant tendencies in TDP were shown between emotions. Therefore, TDP may provide useful measurements with emotion recognition.

An Infotainment Service intended to enhance the human emotion is introduced in this paper. The service is to be installed on the robot helping elderly persons to live comfortable and enjoyable life. The research started with defining the undesirable status of emotion in everyday life, and the psychological skills to cope with the status were sought about. Then, a methodology for providing emotion contents reflecting the coping skill has been suggested. Based on the Cognitive Behavior Therapy, the coping skill is used to edit animation clips. A movie recommendation system to utilize the edited animation clips has been being developed. A series of process for developing the system is described, where the emotion elements are taken into consideration in addition to the user preference as the criterion for recommendation.
Emotion recognition is an important component of affective computing, and is significant in the implementation of natural and friendly human-computer interaction. An effective approach to recognizing emotion from text is based on a machine learning technique, which deals with emotion recognition as a classification problem. However, in emotion recognition, the texts involved are usually very short, leaving a very large, sparse feature space, which decreases the performance of emotion classification. This paper proposes to resolve the problem of feature sparseness, and largely improve the emotion recognition performance from short texts by doing the following: representing short texts with word cluster features, offering a novel word clustering algorithm, and using a new feature weighting scheme. Emotion classification experiments were performed with different features and weighting schemes on a publicly available dataset. The experimental results suggest that the word cluster features and the proposed weighting scheme can partly resolve problems with feature sparseness and emotion recognition performance.
Human emotions are expressed in various ways. It can be expressed through language, facial expression and gestures. In particular, the facial expression contains many information about human emotion. These vague human emotion appear not in single emotion, but in combination of various emotion. This paper proposes a emotional expression algorithm using Active Appearance Model(AAM) and Fuzz k- Nearest Neighbor which give facial expression in similar with vague human emotion. Applying Mahalanobis distance on the center class, determine inclusion level between center class and each class. Also following inclusion level, appear intensity of emotion. Our emotion recognition system can recognize a complex emotion using Fuzzy k-NN classifier.
In this paper, we propose the new emotion model and the robot behavior decision model based on proposed emotion model. As like in human, emotions are hierarchicalized in four levels (momentary emotions, mood, attitude, and personality) and are determined from the robot behavior and human responses. They are combined with motivation (which is determined from the external stimuli) to determine the robot behavior.
