Environmental Impacts on Concentrate Feed Supply Systems for Japanese Domestic Livestock Industry as Evaluated by a Life-cycle Assessment Method

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare the environmental load of two different concentrate feed supply systems to the Japanese domestic livestock industry using the Life-cycle Assessment (LCA) method. The current system was defined as that requiring 11.469 million tons of corn imported from the US by sea transport and supplied as concentrate feed to the Japanese domestic livestock industry. The new system proposed by Kaku et al. in 2004 was defined as where 802,830 tons of US imported corn would not be planted in US and would be replaced by barley planted in 278 thousand ha of Japanese domestic land left fallow for the past year. In this case, 909,000 tons of domestic harvest barley would have been supplied as concentrate feed to the Japanese domestic livestock industry in 2000. The activities taken into account within the two system boundaries were three stages: concentrate feed production, feed transportation and gas emission from the soil by chemical fertilizer. Finished compost was regarded as organic fertilizer and was put instead of chemical fertilizers within the system boundary. Adoption of this new concentrate feed supply system by the Japanese domestic livestock industry could reduce 78,462 tons $CO_2$-equivalents of global warming potential, 347 tons $SO_2$-equivalents of acidification potential, 54 tons $PO_4$-equivalents of eutrophication potential and 0.842 million GJ as energy consumption below 2,000 levels. This LCA study comparing two Japanese domestic livestock concentrate feed supply systems showed that the stage of feed transport contributed most to global warming and the stage of emission from the soil contributed most to acidification and eutrophication. The Japanese domestic livestock industry could participate in emissions trading with $CO_2$-equivalents reduced by shifting from some imported US corn as a concentrate feed to domestic barley planted in land left fallow. In that case the Japanese government could launch emissions trading in accordance with Kyoto Protocol in the future.

EU RED-II 방법론을 적용한 국내 미이용 바이오매스 케나프 펠릿의 전과정 온실가스 배출량 산정 (Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emission Assessment on Locally Generated Kenaf Residue Biomass Fuel in South Korea)

  • 지속가능한 바이오에너지 이용을 위해서는 국내 바이오매스 이용 확대와 지속가능성 증대가 필수적인데, 국내 관련 체계는 아직 미비한 상황이다. 이에 바이오 연료에 대한 지속가능성 평가를 위한 앞선 체계가 마련되어 있는 EU의 RED-II 방법론을 활용하여 국내 농업 잔재물 바이오매스인 케나프(Hibiscus cannabinus L.) 줄기 펠릿을 이용한 바이오매스 발전의 전과정 온실가스 배출량을 이론적으로 산정하였다. 케나프 잔재물 펠릿의 생산경로에 대해 EU 공동연구센터(Joint Research Center)의 배출계수를 이용하여 잔재물 수집, 운송, 펠릿 연료화까지의 전과정 온실가스 배출량을 산정한 결과, 배출량은 3.0 gCO2eq/MJ로 나타났고 이를 25% 발전효율로 연소하여 전력을 생산하는 경우 전과정 온실가스 배출량은 11.9 gCO2eq/MJ로 산출되었다. 이는 전력배출계수로 환산하면 42.8 kgCO2eq/MWh로, 국내 전력배출계수 443.4 kgCO2eq/MWh와 비교하면 90.3%의 온실가스 배출량 감축을 달성할 수 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 수입 목재펠릿과 비교하는 경우 최소 59.6%의 온실가스 배출 감축이 가능하여, 국내 발생 잔재물 바이오매스를 바이오에너지 생산에 이용하는 경우 기존 수입 목재펠릿에 비하여 높은 수준의 온실가스 배출 감축 달성이 가능함을 확인하였다. 이는 국내 바이오에너지의 전과정온실가스 배출량평가 체계 마련을위한 기초자료로 활용될 수있을 것으로기대된다.

DEVELOPMENT ON ENHANCED LEAKED FUEL RECIRCULATION DEVICE OF LPLi ENGINE TO SATISFY SULEV STANDARD

  • The liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), mixture of propane and butane, has the potential to reduce toxic hydrocarbon emissions and inhibit ozone formation due to its chemical composition. Conventional mixer systems, however, have problems in meeting the future lower emission standards because of the difficulty in controlling air-fuel ratio precisely according to mileage tar accumulation. Liquid Phase LPG injection(LPLi) system has several advantages in more precise fuel metering and higher engine performance than those of the conventional mixer type. On the other hands, leakage problem of LPLi system at the injector tip is a main obstacle for meeting more stringent future emission regulations because these phenomena might cause excessive amount of THC emission during cold and hot restart phase. The main focus of this paper is the development of a leaked fuel recirculation system, which can eliminate the leaked fuel at the intake system with the activated carbon canister. Leaked fuel level was evaluated by using a fast response THC analyzer and gas chromatography. The result shows that THC concentration during cold and hot restart stage decreases by over 60%, and recirculation system is an effective method to meet the SULEV standard of the LPLi engine.

  • Spray pyrolysis was applied to prepare $M_{3}MgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu^{2+}$ (M=Ca, Sr, Ba) blue phosphor powder. The library of a Ca-Sr-Ba ternary system was obtained by a combinatorial method combined with the spray pyrolysis in order to optimize the luminescent property under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation. 10 potential compositions were chosen from the first screening. The emission shifted to longer wavelength as Ca became a dominant element and the emission intensity was greatly reduced in the composition region at which Ba is dominant element. On the base of the first screening result, the second fine tuning was carried out in order to optimize the luminescence intensity under VUV excitation. The optimal composition for the highest luminescence intensity was $(Ca_{1.7},\;Sr_{0.3},\;Ba_{1.0})Si_{2}O_{8}:Eu^{2+}$ which had the color coordinate of (0.152, 0.072) and about 64% emission intensity of $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}$ (BAM) phosphor.

Synthesis and Characterization of Upconversion Nanoparticles for Cancer Therapy

  • Various fields have been paid attention to upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) because of its unique optical properties. Moreover, to use the UC luminescent techniques through cell images for identified apoptosis/necrosis of cancer cells have been performed. They have been studied for a versatile biomedical application such as a biosensing tool, or delivery of active forms of medicines inside living cells. UCNPs have distinctive characteristics such as photoluminescence, special emission, low background fluorescence signal and good colloidal stability, which have many advantages compared with the organic dyes and quantum dots. UCNPs have not only a great potential for imaging (UC luminescence) but also therapies (photo-thermal therapy, PTT and photo-dynamic therapy, PDT) in cancer diagnostics. Therefore, we report the enhancement of upconversion red emission in NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoparticles, synthesized via solid-state method with the thermal decomposition of trifluoroacetate as precursors and organic solvent at a high boiling point. The UCNPs have an emission in the field of near infrared wavelength, cubic shape and nano-size in length. In this study, we will further investigate it for cancer therapy with NIR optical detection onto the solid substrate.

현대 FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle) 개발 (Research and development of Hyundai FFVs(flexible fuel vehicles))

  • This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can be operated on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU(Eletronic Control Unit) has been developed and incorporated in the FFV. The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized through the experiment. And various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consisting of manifold type catalyst and secondary air injection system shows good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde, and finally, the possibility of the FFVs as the low emission vehicles is evaluated by presenting NMOG(Non-Methane Organic Gases) levels with respect to M0 and M85. With these results, it is concluded that FFV can be a candidate for the low emission vehicles, but more works on its durability improvement is required.

Tracing the earliest phases of star formation: A pilot survey of Planck Cold Clumps

  • We observed 38 Planck Cold Clumps (PCCs) in the $850{\mu}m$ dust continuum emission using the JCMT/SCUBA-2, and detected the emission in 15 clumps containing dense cores. In this poster we present the preliminary results. The PCCs are cold, dense, and thus, they are considered as objects in the early evolutionary stages of star formation. The sources in our sample were selected based on the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO) 13CO (1-0) integrated intensity maps. In order to examine whether these cores detected in $850{\mu}m$ continuum have potential to be prestellar cores, we compare each core mass estimated from the $850{\mu}m$ continuum with the Virial mass and Bonnor-Ebert (BE) mass calculated from the 13CO (1-0) or C18O (1-0) spectra. By comparing the two column densities from the dust continuum and the 13CO (1-0) or C18O (1-0) line, we also derive the CO depletion factor, which could be an indicator of core evolution. The moment maps of the 13CO (1-0) line are used to study the physical properties (e.g. kinematics, turbulence) of PCCs. We investigate difference between the sources with and without detectable $850{\mu}m$ emission to study the formation conditions of dense cores.

우리나라를 포함한 OECD 국가의 온실가스감축 의무부담에 대한 연구 (Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Allocation Schemes for OECD Countries)

  • 한국을 포함한 OECD 국가들을 대상으로 3가지 의무부담 분담공식을 이용하여 12가지 시나리오를 설정한 후, 2000년도를 기준으로 각 국가가 시나리오에 따라 할당받게 되는 온실가스 감축의 무량과 감축비율, 그리고 전체 OECD 국가의 온실가스 감축량 중 각 국가의 감축비율 등을 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 시나리오와 의무부담방식에 따라 다르지만 전체적으로 우리나라의 의무감측량이 일부 국가를 제외한 여타 OECD 국가와 비슷하게 나타났으며, OECD 국가 총 감축량의 약 1.4-3.5%에 해당하는 34.9-85.8백만 톤을 할당받을 것으로 예측되었고 이는 2000년도 우리나라 온실가스 총 배출량의 약 8.1-19.8%에 해당하는 것으로 분석되었다.

농업용 디젤기관의 대체연료로서 바이오디젤유의 특성 (The Characteristics of Biodiesel Fuel as an Alternative Fuel of an Agricultural Diesel Engine)

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from diesel engines in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of agricultural diesel engines are recognized main cause which influenced environment strongly. In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated agricultural D.I. diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel was reduced remarkably in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 50% at 2500 rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have large differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was increased compared with commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with biodiesel fuel (20vol-%) and cooled EGR method($5{\sim}15%$) in an agricultural D.I. diesel engine.

Facile Synthesis of SrWO4:Eu3+ Phosphors

  • Recently, synthesis of low-dimensional nanostructures is gaining more importance due to their structural properties and growing potential applications. On the other hand, luminescent materials doped with rare earth ions have drawn immense attention. The commercial phosphors are based on many host materials. Among them, tungstates are being currently investigated by many research groups owing to a wide range of applications. Tungstates are formed by different metal cations (e.g., SrWO4, Na2WO4, NiWO4, Cr2WO6, and ZrW2O8) and their structure depends on the size of the metal cation. Tungstates with large bivalent cations (${\gg}0.1\;nm$) have the scheelite structure and the wolframite structure with smaller ions (<0.1 nm). Strontium tungstate has the scheelite structure which is tetragonal with space group I41/a. The luminescent properties of the tungstate have been extensively explored in application fields such as sensors, detectors, lasers, photoluminiscent devices, photo catalysts, etc. In this work, we synthesized SrWO4 phosphors with different Eu3+ concentrations by using a facile route. The morphology was analyzed by using a field-emission scanning electron microscope, which exhibits the spherical shape. Transmission electron microscope image revealed the spheres composed of nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed their tetragonal shape. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra were analyzed by varying the Eu3+ concentration, which shows a dominant red emission.
