  • The aim of this study was to characterize the emission pathways and the footprint of greenhouse gases (GHG) in Daecheong Reservoir using the G-res Tool, and to evaluate the GHG emission intensity (EI) compared to other energy sources. In addition, the change in GHG emissions was assessed in response to the total phosphorus (TP) concentration. The GHG flux in post-impoundment was found to be 262 gCO2eq/m2/yr, of which CO2 and CH4 were 45.7% and 54.2%, respectively. Diffusion of CO2 contributed the most, followed by diffusion, degassing, and bubbling of CH4. The net GHG flux increased to 510 gCO2eq/m2/yr because the forest (as CO2 sink) was lost after dam construction. The EI of Daecheong Reservoir was 86.8 gCO2eq/kWh, which is 3.7 times higher than the global EI of hydroelectric power, due to its low power density. However, it was remarkable to highlight the value to be 9.5 times less than that of coal, a fossil fuel. We also found that a decrease in TP concentration in the reservoir leads to a decrease in GHG emissions. The results can be used to improve understanding of the GHG emission characteristics and to reduce uncertainty of the national GHG inventory of dam reservoirs.

  • Recently Korea considers the source of biomass burning emissions reflecting national characteristic, so that includes the inventory of emission source but preceding research is rarely implemented in Korea. Therefore, a study on characteristics of greenhouse gas emissions from biomass burning is necessary and it also makes the source management effectively when the climate-atmospheric management system takes effect. In this study, using the manufactured charcoal kiln and the number of experiment was three times to get a reliable experiment result. The sampling time was decided by changing degree in charcoal kiln and charcoal manufacturing process. The results of calculation greenhouse gas emission factor from charcoal kiln were $668g\;CO_2/kg$, $20g\;CH_4/kg$, $0.01g\;N_2O/kg$. Using the emission factor developed in this study, estimate the emissions from charcoal kiln in Korea. The results of calculation were $46,040ton\;CO_2/yr$, $1,378ton\;CH_4/yr$, $0.69ton\;N_2O/yr$ and greenhouse gas emissions applying GWP are as follows. $CH_4$ emissions was $28,947ton\;CO_2eq./yr$, $N_2O$ emissions was $214ton\;CO_2eq./yr$. As a results, Gross emissions of charcoal kiln in Korea was $75,201ton\;CO_2eq./yr$, but the oak used in this study is included to the biomass so emissions of $CO_2$ are excluded. Therefore the net emissions of charcoal kiln in Korea was $29,161ton\;CO_2eq./yr$.

  • There are several studies on the effects of emissions of highly reactive volatile organic compounds (HRVOC) from the industrial sources in the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria (HGB) area on the high ozone events during the Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS) in summer of 2000. They showed that the modeled atmosphere lacked reactivity to produce the observed high ozone event and suggested "imputation" of HRVOC emissions from the base inventory. Byun et al. (2007b) showed the imputed inventory leads to too high ethylene concentrations compared to the measurements at the chemical super sites but still too little aloft compared to the NOAA aircraft. The paper suggested that the lack of reactivity in the modeled Houston atmosphere must be corrected by targeted, and sometimes of episodic, increase of HRVOC emissions from the large sources such as flares in the Houston Ship Channel (HSC) distributed into the deeper level of the boundary layer. We performed retrospective meteorological and air quality modeling to achieve better air quality prediction of ozone by comparison with various chemical and meteorological measurements during the Texas Air Quality Study periods in August-September 2006 (TexA QS-II). After identifying several shortcomings of the forecast meteorological simulations and emissions inputs, we prepared new retrospective meteorological simulations and updated emissions inputs. We utilized assimilated MM5 inputs to achieve better meteorological simulations (detailed description of MM5 assimilation can be found in F. Ngan et al., 2012) and used them in this study for air quality simulations. Using the better predicted meteorological results, we focused on the emissions uncertainty in order to capture high peak ozone which occasionally happens in the HGB area. We described how the ozone predictions are affected by emissions uncertainty in the air quality simulations utilizing different emission inventories and adjustments.

  • The joint use of remotely sensed data and field measurements has been widely used to estimate aboveground carbon stock in many countries. Recently, Korea Forest Research Institute has developed new carbon emission factors for kind of tree, thus more accurate estimate is possible. In this study, the aboveground carbon stock of Danyang area in South Korea was estimated using k-Nearest Neighbor(kNN) algorithm with the 5th National Forest Inventory(NFI) data. Considering the spectral response of forested area under the climate condition in Korea peninsular which has 4 distinct seasons, Landsat TM seasonal satellite images were collected. As a result, the estimated total carbon stock of Danyang area was ranged from 3542768.49tonC to 3329037.51tonC but seasonal trends were not found.

  • Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences has provided various beam irradiation services to researchers using a 50 MeV cyclotron beam line. In particular, since the neutron beam service uses the nuclear reaction between protons and beryllium, the possibility of activation of the irradiated sample increases by using a high current. In this study, MCNP 6.2 and FISPACT-II 4.0 were used to evaluate the possible activation during the 35 MeV 20 ㎂ neutron beam service, which is preferred by the researchers. As a result of the calculation, if the iron, copper, and tungsten samples were irradiated for more than 1 hour, long-lived radioisotopes were produced and their radioactivity exceeded the standard level for self-disposal. Under the conditions of 2 hours of daily irradiation, no activation occurred in the building materials, and the internal exposure of workers due to air activation inside the irradiation room was very insignificant. And when this air was discharged to environment, the radioactivity including this air was also satisfied the emission standard.

  • The application of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to analyze the environmental impact to different swine waste treatment systems was investigated. The first part of LCA is to organize an inventory of parameters and emissions released due to the system under investigation. In the following step of the Life Cycle Impact Assessment, the inventory data were analyzed and aggregated in order to finally get one index representing the total environmental burden. For the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) the Eco-indicator 95 method has been chosen because this is well documented and regularly applied impact method. Two different swine waste treatment systems such as aerobic and anaerobic digestion systems were chosen as an example for the life cycle impact analysis. For establishing the parameters to be assessed the agricultural environmental effects to above swine waste treatment systems, it has been observed that there was high at T-P emission in anaerobic digestion system and $CO_2$ emission in aerobic digestion system. For Eco-indicator values per environmental effect for swine waste treatment systems related to one tonne of swine waste, it was shown that there was a negative index for global warm potential and soil acidification in aerobic digestion system, but relatively high positive index for eutrophication in anaerobic digestion system.

  • In this paper, a portal system compatible with MRV regulation was designed to monitoring, reporting and verifying $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption data from an international ship. A portal system supports monitoring and reporting task of international shipping companies and calculates national greenhouse gas inventory. EU MRV law, MRV discussions of IMO, responses of international shipping companies to ship energy efficiency and greenhouse gas regulation, and greenhouse gas statistics on international shipping were analyzed to drive portal system requirements. For ship energy efficiency and $CO_2$ emitted monitoring, a data collection module was designed based on on-board equipment, energy efficiency measuring device and navigation report. Data transfer module with easy management and minimized usage to transfer ship data to shore was designed. A portal system was designed to convert the collected data into the standard reporting format, perform monitoring, statical analysis, verification and auto report generation, and support national greenhouse gas inventory.

  • There are four differentiated levels to quantify the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from a facility, which are Tier 1 to 4 based on the IPCC guidelines. In this study, the emission estimates from all tier levels were calculated to compare their total $CO_2$ emission results among themselves for seven facilities, including three sectors of electricity generation, municipal solid waste incineration, and cement manufacturing for three months between February and May 2011. Generally the measured $CO_2$ emissions by Tier 4 were higher than the calculated $CO_2$ emissions by Tier 3, which had been also observed for the power plants in the USA. It was found out that to obtain more reliable estimation for Tier 3, accurate analysis of the composition of the fuel used should be carried out. It was suggested that further refinement on the administrative guidelines be made to make it more robust.

  • Land use statistics calculation is very informative data as the activity data for calculating exact carbon absorption and emission in post-2020. To effective interpretation by land use category, This study classify automatically image interpretation by land use category applying forest aerial photography (FAP) to deep learning model and calculate national unit statistics. Dataset (DS) applied deep learning is divided into training dataset (training DS) and test dataset (test DS) by extracting image of FAP based national forest resource inventory permanent sample plot location. Training DS give label to image by definition of land use category and learn and verify deep learning model. When verified deep learning model, training accuracy of model is highest at epoch 1,500 with about 89%. As a result of applying the trained deep learning model to test DS, interpretation classification accuracy of image label was about 90%. When the estimating area of classification by category using sampling method and compare to national statistics, consistency also very high, so it judged that it is enough to be used for activity data of national GHG (Greenhouse Gas) inventory report of LULUCF sector in the future.

  • The objective of this study is to develop sustainable PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs) that could exhibit comparable strength level to normal PVA FRCCs with no recycled materials. To evaluate mechanical properties of the FRCCs, compressive, flexural and direct tensile tests were conducted. In addition to the test, to calculate amount of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emission at the stage of manufacturing the FRCCs, life cycle inventory data base (LCI DB) were referenced from domestic and Japan. From the test results, the mechanical properties such as compressive, flexural and direct tensile strengths were decreased as the replacement ratio of recycled materials increased. And it was determined that the amount of $CO_2$ emission was reduced for the specimens with higher water-binder ratio (W/B) and replacement ratios. It was also found that binder intensity ($B_i$) value was higher as replacement ratio of fly ash (FA) increased. This result means that larger amount of FA is need to deliver one unit of a given performance indicator (1 MPa of strength) of FRCCs compared to that of ordinary portland cement (OPC). As a result, it could be concluded that FRCCs with W/B 45% replaced by FA 25% and recycled sand (RS) 25% is desirable for both target performance and $CO_2$ emission.
