  • In the quantitative analysis of oxygenated exhaust emissions (unburned methanol, formal- dehyde) from methanol fueled vehicles, the oxygen contained in oxygenated exhaust gases lowers the FID (Flame Ionization Detector) response factor of conventional THC analyzer and leads to erroneous HC reading. For correct measurement of various HCs including oxygenated HCs emitted from FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle), first of all, the measurement technique of real HC emissions should be established. GC and HPLC-DNPH measuring methods specified by the EPA are used in this paper to analyze unburned methanol and formaldehyde components in the exhaust emissions. In emission test of FFV, unburned methanol and formaldehyde are emitted mostly during cold transient period, and it is shown that formaldehyde emission level is proportional to engine displacements. In view of the HC emission level, vehicle using M85 has 40% advantage over gasoline-fueled vehicle in OMHCE and has a good potential of a low emission vehicle.

폐기물 소각시설 배가스에서의 수은 배출특성 (The Characteristics of Mercury Emission from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Incinerator Stack)

  • This study was carried to investigate the emission characteristics of mercury from domestic and industrial MSW (municipal solid waste) incinerator stacks. The mercury concentration levels of flue gas from 32 MSW incinerators stacks selected were above the criteria level ($5{\mu}g/S\;m^3$). MSWI facilities exceeding the criteria levels in Korea are due to the poor units comparison of combustion chamber(CC)-cyclone(CY)-stack. So, the mercury from MSW incinerators stack were suspected to contaminate the natural system unless the MSW incinerators were properly controlled. Mean-while, the relationship between mercury concentration and temperature of flue gas in MSW incinerator stacks were examined at two temperature ranges (Group A : $29.85{\sim}327.63^{\circ}C$, Group B : $446.9{\sim}848.15^{\circ}C$). The mercury concentration in flue gas with high temperature range was higher than that of flue gas with low temperature rage. This mean that the temperature of flue gas plays an important role in mercury control in MSW incinerator. The emission characteristics oi mercury was also evaluated by using the correlation matrix between the mercury and NOx, $PM_{10}$, moisture (MO.) at both low temperature and high temperature flue gas ranges. The mercury concentration was mainly affected by NOx, $PM_{10}$. moisture (MO.) at low temperature range, while the mercury concentration at high temperature flue gas was mainly affected by NOx, moisture (MO.). From these results, it was suggested that the temperature of cooling system and the air pollution control device should be properly regulated in order to control mercury of flue gas in MSWI incinerator.

  • Lean-rich combustion system was composed both fuel-lean and fuel-rich flame at once. Each of fuel-lean and fuel-rich combustion types to reduce Thermal $NO_x$ and obtain flame stability. This study was confirmed a stability of flame through variation of flame shape that EGR was applied and compared the emission characteristics of EGR lean-rich combustion system to normal premixed combustion system at real condition to review a utility of the system. As a result, emission index of $NO_x$ and CO generated from EGR lean-rich combustion system at global equivalence ratio is 0.85 just half level($NO_x$ 0.31 g/kg, CO 0.08g/kg) compared to the amount generated from normal premixed combustion system at equivalence ratio is 0.78.

  • It is a present situation that the control on automobile emission is getting more restrictive and also the regulations for emission are changing greatly up to level of those advanced foreign countries. Specially, it has been many years that exhaust gases from gasoline automobile rather than from diesel is the major object concerned by Korea and other countries, and it is strongly required on the reduction techniques on harmful NOx and PM among those compositions. Thus, this research focused on the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and the target for this research is heavy-duty turbo-diesel engine with Cooled EGR. Furthermore, this research has been made efforts to accomplish the regulation on emission for heavy duty diesel engine.

가솔린 기관용 EGR밸브 개발에 관한 연구 (Development of the exhaust gas recirculation valve for the gasoline engine)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an exhaust gas recirculation valve for reduction of the NOx emission of the gasoline engine. In this study the back pressure modulated(BPM) EGR system was developed and tested for the 1.6$\ell$ gasoline engine. By this system 50% of NOx emission was reduced at 7% EGR rate. Fuel consumption and CO emission were not affected by EGR but HC was increased up to the level of allowable limit. Overall operation was satisfactory. As a result of this study, the technics for developing EGR valve and adjusting the engine for EGR have been established.

  • 현재 온실가스 배출량 산정 방법은 온실가스 저감대책 효과 분석이 불가능하며 차량의 이동특성이 반영이 안 된 실정으로 이를 극복할 수 있는 온실가스 배출량 산정 방법의 필요로 본 연구가 시작되었다. 교통수요 분석을 통해 차종, 교통상황에 따른 HBEFA 배출계수로 배출량을 산정하는 방법을 통해 고양시에 적용하여 분석하였다. 본연구의 지자체단위 교통수요 추정방안을 통해 실질적인 교통 이용특성에 맞는 온실가스 배출량이 산출되었다. 온실가스 지자체별 통행요금, 속도제한 등 온실가스 저감 요인들이 교통수요 모형에 반영되어 온실가스 저감 대책에 대한 효과분석 후 환경영향을 줄일 수 있는 방안을 강구하여 온실가스 저감 대책 마련에 효율적으로 이용될 것으로 판단된다.

Optical emission analysis of hybrid air-water discharges

  • In this paper, hybrid air-water discharges were used to develop an optimal condition for providing a high level of water decomposition for hydrogen yield. Electrical and optical phenomena accompanying the discharges were investigated along with feeding gases, flow rates, and point-to-plane electrode gap distance. The primary focus of this experiment was put on the optical emission of the near UV range, with the energy threshold sufficient for water dissociation and excitation. The $OH(A^{2+},'=0\;X^2,"=0$) band's optical emission intensity indicated the presence of plasma chemical reactions involving hydrogen formation. In the gaseous atmosphere saturated with water vapor the OH(A-X) band intensity was relatively high compared to the liquid and transient phases although the optical emission strongly depended on the flow rate and type of feeding gas. In the gaseous phase discharge phenomenon for Ar carrier gas transformed into a gliding arc via the flow rate growth. OH(A-X) band's intensity increased according to the flow rate or residence time of He feeding gas. Reciprocal tendency was acquired for $N_2$ and Ar carrier gases. The peak value of OH(A-X) intensity was observed in the proximity of the water surface, however in the cases of Ar and $N_2$ with 0.5 SLM flow rate peaks shifted to the region below the water surface. Rotational temperature ($T_{rot}$) was estimated to be in the range of 900-3600 K, according to the carrier gas and flow rate, which corresponds to the arc-like-streamer discharge.

  • Split injection has been known to reduce total hydrocarbon (THC) emission level and increase engine performance under certain operating conditions 1, 2). Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a common technique adopted for nirtric oxides (NOx) reduction by the dilution of intake air, despite a sacrifice of simultaneous increase in THC and decrease in engine performance3). Thus, using split injection with adequate EGR may improve the emission level of UBHC, NOx and the engine performance compared to that of single-injection with or without EGR cases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the engine performance and emission levels at various engine operating conditions and injection methods when it is applied with EGR. The characteristics of single-injection and split-injection were investigated with various engine loads and EGR rates. The engine speed is changed from 800rpm to 1200rpm to investigate how the combustion characteristics are changing with increasing engine speed.

추적가스 실험을 통한 축사 내 질병 확산 분석 (Analysis of the Disease Spread in a Livestock Building Using Tracer Gas Experiment)

  • Recently, the livestock industry in Korea was heavily affected by the outbreak of official livestock diseases such as foot and mouse disease, high pathogenic avian influenza, swine influenza, and so on. It has been established that these diseases are being spread through direct contact, droplet and airborne transmission. Among these transmissions, airborne transmission is very complex in conducting field investigation due to the invisibility of the pathogens and unstable weather conditions. In this study, the airborne transmission was thoroughly investigated inside a pig house by conducting tracer gas ($CO_2$) experiment because experiment with real pathogen is limited and dangerous. This is possible as it can be assumed that the flow is similar pattern very fine particles and gas. In the experiment, the ventilation structure as well as the location of gas emission were varied. The $CO_2$ detection sensors were installed at 0.5 and 1.3 m height from the floor surface. The tracer gas level was measured every second. Results revealed that the direction of spread can be determined by the response time. Response time refers to the time to reach 150 ppm from the gas emission source at each measuring points. The location of the main flow as well as the gas emission was also found to be very important factor causing the spread.

저탄소도시를 지향하며 -ICLEI 규약의 한계성 분석- (In Pursuit of Low Carbon Cities: Understanding Limitations of ICLEI's International Local Government Greenhouse Gas Emissions Protocol)

  • 지방정부로 구성된 국제환경 협의회(ICLEI)는 범지구적 차원에서 기후변화를 완화시키기 위해 만들어진 기구이다. 지방정부들은 ICLEI를 통해 각 정부가 배출하는 온실가스를 정확히 측정하고자 관련 규약을 만들었다. 본 논문은 ICLEI 규약의 한계점을 지적한다. 온실가스배출관련 항목들을 지방정부관점에서 구분하고, 또 국가차원에서 요구하는 항목들과 일치시킨다는 점에서 이 규약은 실용적이라 할 수 있다. 특히 '이중측정'과 '탄소배출할당' 문제를 해결할 수 있는 사회적 기반을 마련한 부분은 지방정부들이 기후변화에 적극적으로 대응하고자 하는 의지로 해석할 수 있다. 하지만, 그 제한점은 다음과 같다. '생체연료연소에 의한 이산화탄소배출'을 온실가스로 취급하지 않는 점과 '간접이중측정'을 간과한 점은 온실가스배출량의 정확한 측정을 저해할 것으로 예상되며, 이들을 수정보완해야 지방정부들이 기후변화를 완화시키는데 있어 실제로 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
