The previous researches on railway sector have focused on the total greenhouse gas(GHG) emission through national approaches. The aim of this study was to calculate GHG emission at a local government level to measure each city's GHG intensity on rail transportation. This study followed 'the guidelines for local government greenhouse gas inventory(issued by Korea Environment Corporation)' including VKT(Vehicle kilometers Travelled) methodology for railway inventory at a metropolitan area. As a result, the gyeongsangbuk-do emitted the highest GHG emissions at a local government level, followed by chungcheongnam-do and chungcheongbuk-do in 2006. Among several cities, Gimcheon-city emitted the highest GHG at basic government level in 2006. In future, the calculation of GHG emissions at local government level can be applied to establish various policies for GHG reduction.
In this study, greenhouse gas emission of magnesium industry was estimated and the reduction potential of the greenhouse gas emission was evaluated with reduction technologies. Default value of IPCC guideline was used to calculate the greenhouse gas emission and $SF_6$ alternatives were considered in reduction potential. Import of magnesium ingot was 22,806 ton in 2013, which will be expected to increase to 81,700 ton with 20% rate in 2020. Magnesium ingot was consumed to produce magnesium alloy in diecasting process. Recently, commercial production of crown magnesium and magensium plate began. Based on ingot consumption, $CO_2$ emission of domestic magnesium industry was estimated to 504,000 ton, which is about 0.79% of domestic industrial emissions. Reduction potential of diecasting process was estimated to 489,320 ton by changing SF6 to alternative gases such as HFC-134a, Novec-612. Emission factor of Tier 3 level should be developed to enhance the accuracy of greeenhouse gas emission of magnesium industry.

An experiment using preheated air in the coaxial diffusion flame burner was carried out in order to decrease NOx emission and improve the thermal efficiency. Preheated air combustion generally produces high NOx emissions but it was known very well to reduce NOx emission by diluting the combustion air with inert gas in preheated air combustion. In our study, $N_2$ gas was used for diluent and propane was utilized for fuel. We set the combustion air temperature on 300K, 500K, 700K, 900K and dilution level from 21% to 10% in terms of oxygen concentration. NOx emission increased along increment of combustion air temperature and decreased along increment of dilution level(lowering of oxygen concentration in combustion air). Flame-off limit with dilution level enhanced, flame length became longer and the location of maximum flame temperature became lower with increasing of combustion air temperature.
In Korea, the emission standards for air pollutants will be more tighten from Jan. 2005. Especially, the new emission standards is focused on the nitrogen oxide. From this trend of standards, nitrogen oxide emission is hot issue in energy fields. Also, we have a new environmental problem, the carbon dioxide emission, which are related to the global warming. To solve the environmental problems, we must define the situation of clean-up technologies level in Korea and decide the direction of R&D for flue gas cleaning technologies. Now, this paper discus briefly on the De-NOx R&D activities and the large scale testing facility for flue gas clean-up technologies in Korea Institute of Energy Research. These discussions are contribute to the increasing of the R&D activities for flue gas clean-up technologies in Korea.

An experiment using high preheated and swirled air in the coaxial diffusion flame burner was carried out in order to decrease NOx emission and improve the thermal efficiency. $N_2$ gas was used for diluent and propane was utilized for fuel. Combustion using high preheated air has two remarkable characteristics ; (1) low NOx emission with increasing dilution level, (2) high thermal efficiency in the furnace. Also, swirled air can mix fuel and oxidizer well in condition of diffusion flme and maintain the stable combustion. The color of flame changes from yellow to blue green according to increasing the dilution level of mixture gas. NO emission decreased with increasing dilution level and the swirl number.
This study examines the contribution level of greenhouse gas(GHG) emission reduction and installation costs of renewable energy facilities. The GHG emission forecasts and industrial structures in the 16 regions of Korea are then analyzed to identify the proper supply of renewable energy sources for each region. The results show that water power is the most effective and efficient renewable energy source to reduce GHG emissions, followed by sunlight, wind power, geothermal heat, and solar heat, respectively. The 16 regions are then categorized into 4 groups based on their GHG emission forecast and industrial structure: high emission and manufacturing group, low emission and manufacturing group, low emission and service group, and high emission and service group. The proper supply of renewable energy sources for each group is then determined based on the contribution level and cost efficiency of GHG emission reduction.

Formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels bonded with pine and wattle tannin-based adhesives, urea-formaldehyde resin (UF), melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF), and co-polycondensed resin of urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) were measured by the Japanese standard method using a desiccator (JIS A 1460) and the EN 120 (European Committee For Standardization, 1991) method using the perforator value. In formaldehyde emission, all particleboards made using the wattle tannin-based adhesive with three different hardeners, paraformaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine, and tris(hydroxyl)nitromethan (TN), satisfied the requirements of grade $E_1$. But only those made using the pine tannin-based adhesive with the hexamine as hardener met the grade $E_1$ requirements. Hexamine was effective in reducing formaldehyde emission in tannin-based adhesives when used as the hardener. While the UF resin showed a desiccator value of $7.1mg/{\ell}$ and a perforator value of 12.1 mg/100 g, the MF resin exhibited a desiccator value of $0.6mg/{\ell}$ and a perforator value of 2.9 mg/100 g. According to the Japanese Industrial Standard and the European Standard, the formaldehyde emission level of the MDF panels made with UF resin in this study came under grade $E_2$. The formaldehyde emission level was dramatically reduced by the addition of MF resin. The desiccator and perforator methods produced proportionally equivalent results. Gas chromatography, a more sensitive and advanced method, was also used. The samples for gas chromatography were gathered during the experiment involving the perforator method. The formaldehyde contents measured by gas chromatography were directly proportional to the perforator values.
"The Framework Act on Low-Carbon Green Growth" specifies the requirements for the development and verification of emission factors for establishing reliable national greenhouse gas statistics. The scope of the regulations covers the development and validation of energy, industrial processes, solvents and other product use, agriculture, land use, land use change and emission and absorption coefficients of the forestry and waste sector as defined in the 1996 IPCC Guideline and GPG 2000, The minerals sector to be covered in this study belongs to industrial processes. As a representative method for quantifying and evaluating GHG emission factors, there are emission grade quality grading and DARS (Data Rating Rating System) in the 'Procedures for Preparing Emission Factor Documents (1997)' reported by US-EPA. However, the above two methods are not specific and comprehensive, and lack the details for accurate emission factor verification. Therefore, there is a need for a method for verifying and quantifying certified greenhouse gas emission factors that reflects characteristics of each industry sector in Korea and accord with IPCC G/L and GHG target management. In this study, we conducted a weighted study on quantitative and evaluation lists of emission factor using questionnaires to develop a more accurate methodology for quantifying national greenhouse gas emission factors in the mineral sector. Quantification and evaluation of emission factor are classified into essential verification and quality evaluation. The essential verifications are : administrative compatibility, method of determining emission factors, emission characteristics, sampling methods and analysis methods, representativeness of data. The quality evaluations consisted of the quality control of the data, the accuracy of the measurement and analysis, the level of uncertainty, not directly affect the emission factor, but consisted of factors that determine data quality.

In order to reduce dependence on the fossil fuels and $CO_2$ gas emission in farming activities, the government has pushed ahead with making the self-sufficiency of farming energy up 40% level in green villages. The objectives of this study are to survey the energy consumption of horticultural facilities or agricultural machineries, and to analyze the reduced $CO_2$ gas emission level from fossil fuel to bio-diesel fuel. For the implement of this study, it is necessary to analyze the energy consumption level in the various sector of farming activities, and available renewable energy sources should be selected. Annual total $CO_2$ gas emission in the tillage farming sector was analyzed as $5,667,258\;t-CO_2$ and that in the horticultural facilities occupied $4,932,607\;t-CO_2$, while the $CO_2$ gas emission level of diesel fuel was $3,105,707\;t-CO_2$, and that of the heavy oil showed $1,370,578\;t-CO_2$. The average $CO_2$ gas emission level of horticultural facilities in the country was analyzed as $29,418\;t-CO_2/ha$. Among the total energy consumption of agricultural machineries, tractor used 284,763kL, power tiller spent 221,314 kL, grain drier consumed 145,524kL and combine tractor expend 72,537kL. From the comparison of $CO_2$ gas emission level between fossil fuel and bio-diesel fuel for the horticultural facilities or agricultural machinery in G-City, Jeonbuk Province, the $CO_2$ gas emission level can be reduced by 7% through replacing the fuel from fossil to biodiesel.

The reduction technologies of exhaust gas from both the off-road engine and on-road vehicles are important. It is possible to apply various combustion technologies with engines after the application of a treatment technology to this field. In this study, main injection timing, pilot injection timing, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate were selected as the experimental parameters whose effects on the emission of exhaust gases and on the fuel consumption characteristics were to be determined. In the experiment, the emission of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and Smoke, and the Torque at the same fuel consumption level, were measured. The experimental data were analyzed using the Taguchi method with an L9 orthogonal array. Additionally, analysis of variation (ANOVA) was used to confirm the influence of each parameter. Consequently, the level of each parameter was selected based on the signal-to-noise ratio data (main injection timing, 3; pilot injection timing, 3; EGR rate, 2), and the results of the Taguchi prediction were verified experimentally (error: NOx, 10.3 %; Smoke, 6.6 %; brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC), 0.6 %).
