The purpose of this study is to evaluate representativeness of fuel-based emission factors. Twelve light-duty diesel vehicles which meet Euro-3 to 5 legislative emission limits were selected for emission tests. Second-by-second modal emission rates of vehicles were measured on a standard laboratory chassis dynamometer system. An off-cycle driving cycle was developed as a representative Korean real-world on-road driving cycle. Fuel-based emission factors were developed for short trip segments that involved in the selected driving cycle. Each segment was defined to have unit travel distance, which is 1 km, and characterized by its average speed and Relative Positive Acceleration (RPA). Fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factors demonstrate relatively good representativeness in terms of vehicle operation conditions. $NO_x$ emission factors are estimated to be within ${\pm}20%$ of area-wide emission factor under more than 40% of total driving situations. This result implies that the fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factor could be practically implemented into the on-road emission management strategies, such as a remote sensing device (RSD). High emitting vehicles as well as high emitting operating conditions heavily affect on the mean values and distributions of CO and THC emission factors. Few high emitting conditions are pulling up the mean value and biasing the distributions, which weaken representativeness of fuel-based CO and THC emission factors.
In Korea, sales of passenger cars using diesel and LPG fuels were continuously increased in recent years. From now on 2030, the registrated vehicles will close in about twenty five million in Korea. From these reason, Investigation on the comparison of exhaust emission characteristics of passenger cars using LPG and Diesel fuel in variation of driving mode and ambient conditions were conducted in this study. Exhaust emission characteristics of test vehicles were measured and analyzed by using chassis dynamometer and emission analyzer. Also, test vehicles were selected on the diesel vehicle with 1.7L engine and LPG vehicle with 2.0L engine. In order to study on emission characteristics according to driving cycles, CVS-75, NEDC, US06, SC03, Cold-FTP and HWFET were applied and the test conditions were set up the cases of A/C on and hot start. From these results, it is revealed that the NOx emission of diesel vehicle was higher than that of LPG vehicle and the case of CO emission shows the opposite patterns. In the HC emission, the emission increasing patterns not showed but the NOx emission of diesel vehicle and CO emission of LPG vehicle were showed the variation patterns according to the various driving modes.
Running tests on roads were conducted to clarify the influences of road infrastructure, traffic condition and vehicle's emission level to the amount of emission at local roadsides, and to reveal the operation patterns which can reduce the emission peaks. NOx emission peaks of two light duty freight diesel vehicles which have different emission levels were evaluated by using an on-board measurement system. Tests were carried out with various payload conditions and road conditions. As a result many NOx emission peaks were observed when the vehicles were starting or accelerating at intersections. The test vehicle which has higher emission level caused higher frequency and level of NOx emission peaks. Shifting up at lower engine speed in combination with lower acceleration brought out not only reduction of NOx emission peaks level but also of $CO_2$ mass emission.
PURPOSES : This study proposes a methodology to collect data necessary for microlevel emission estimation, such as second-by-second speeds and road grades, and to accordingly estimate emissions. METHODS : To ease data collection for microlevel emission estimation, a vehicle equipped with speed- and location-recording instruments as well as equipment for measuring road geometry was used. As a case study, this vehicle and the proposed methodology were used on a 10-km-long highway in Yongin City, Korea. Emissions from the vehicle during driving were estimated in various microscale driving conditions. RESULTS : Differences in the estimated emission under different microscale driving conditions cannot be ignored. Compared with the estimations obtained when second-by-second data were not considered, CO and NOx emissions were more than threefold higher when considering second-by-second speed; similarly, CO and NOx emission estimations were higher by approximately 10% and 3%, respectively, when considering second-by-second road grade. CONCLUSIONS : The proposed method can estimate vehicle emissions under real-world driving conditions in such applications as road design and traffic policy assessments.
$NO_x$ emissions from diesel vehicles have been regarded as a main cause of high $NO_2$ concentration in metropolitan area. Recent studies have shown that the on-road $NO_x$ emissions of diesel vehicles are quite higher than the emission limits specified with the pre-defined test method for emission certification. To reduce air pollutants effectively, the discrepancy of emissions in certification and real-driving conditions should be tackled. In this study, the real-driving emissions have been estimated with portable emission measurement system (PEMS). The results of this study have shown that the on-road $NO_x$ emissions from diesel vehicles have been decreased as the introduction of stricter emission regulation, EURO-6, but additional reduction should be still required and robust technologies should be applied to control $NO_x$ in real-driving conditions. RDE-LDV (Real Driving Emission - Light Duty Vehicles) test method being developed in the European Union can represent excessive on-road $NO_x$ emissions of diesel vehicles as applied emission technologies and can be a solution to remove discrepant $NO_x$ emissions between certification and Korean real-driving conditions. Among the $NO_x$ reduction technologies for EURO-6 diesel vehicles, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system has shown the better performance than lean $NO_x$ trap (LNT) system to control on-road $NO_x$ emissions. Implementing RDE-LDV will require vehicle manufacturers to adopt the more effective $NO_x$ reduction technology in real driving conditions.
Strengthening vehicle emission regulation is one of important policies to improve air quality in urban area. Due to the limitation of specified driving cycles for certification test to reflect real driving conditions, additional off-cycle emission regulations have been adopted in US and being developed in Europe. The driving cycles of US or Europe have been used in emission certification for Korean light-duty vehicles, but it has not been known how well the driving cycles reflect various real driving patterns in Korea. In that point of view, it is required to estimate vehicle emission based on real road driving conditions to raise the effectiveness of vehicle emission regulation in Korea. In this study, real driving emission measurements have been conducted for three Korean light-duty vehicles with PEMS. The driving routes consisted of urban, rural and motorway in Seoul and Incheon. The data have been analyzed with various averaging methods including moving averaging windows method and compared to emission limits set with emission certification modes applied to tested vehicles. The results have shown that the real driving pollutant emissions of a gasoline and a LPG vehicles have been ranged quite lower than those of emission limits on CVS-75 driving cycle. But real driving NOx of a light duty diesel vehicle has been considerably higher than emission limit of NEDC driving cycle. The higher than expected NOx emission of a diesel vehicle might be caused by different strategy to control EGR in real driving condition from NEDC driving.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the emission characteristics of LP gas burner for the Practical combustion conditions including fm voltage, inlet area, gas Pressure, emission resistance, duct length and height. The result shows that CO is almost remains constant for the emission fan voltage, but significantly increases with the reduction rate of air inlet, up to 3000ppm at 50% of reduction rate. Also, the variation of gas pressure has no effect to CO of gas boiler due to its governor which controls gas pressure secondly, but it gives an rapid increase of CO for the gas range. The emission resistance test shows that CO is suddenly increased with the reduction rate of emission duct above 70% and main burner is stopped at 90%. The reverse wind test shows that CO is suddenly increased with the air velocity above 7m/s and main burner is stopped at 9m/s. The more horizontal length of emission duct is long and the vertical height is low, CO is infinitesimally increased.
Coal-burning utilities are facing a major NOx control compliance challenge due to the heavy emission regulation. In response to this challenge, some applicative technologies to effectively reduce NOx are developed and applied in the pulverized coal power plants. One of these is low NOx burner(LNB) equipped with multi-staged air register. In this study, NOx emission rate and flame shapes are investigated with secondary and tertiary air flow conditions in air staged coal burner, and the optimal windows of flow conditions to minimize NOx emission rate are found out. The test conditions treated in this study are the flow rate, swirl direction and intensity and throat injection velocity of secondary and tertiary air.
An experimental study was conducted to reduce NOx emission in RT(radiant tube)burner by using oscillating combustion processes in RIST. A solenoid valve gives the various oscillating conditions, such as oscillation frequency, duty ratio of fuel flow. In this study, we used commercial software, CFD-ACE+ to predict combustion and NOx emission characteristics for various experimental oscillation conditions. The effect of oscillation frequency and duty ratio on NOx emission will be discussed in terms of flow field, temperature and equivalence ratio distributions in detail.

Background: This study evaluated the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive material according to local weather conditions and emission conditions. Materials and Methods: Local weather conditions were defined as 8 patterns that frequently occur around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant and emission conditions were defined as 6 patterns from a combination of emission rates and the total number of particles of the $^{137}Cs$, using the WRF/HYSPLIT modeling system. Results and Discussion: The highest mean concentration of $^{137}Cs$ occurred at 0900 LST under the ME4_1 (main wind direction: SSW, daily average wind speed: $2.8ms^{-1}$), with a wide region of its high concentration due to the continuous wind changes between 0000 and 0900 LST; under the ME3 (NE, $4.1ms^{-1}$), the highest mean concentration of $^{137}Cs$ occurred at 1500 and 2100 LST with a narrow dispersion along a strong northeasterly wind. In the case of ME4_4 (S, $2.7ms^{-1}$), the highest mean concentration of $^{137}Cs$ occurred at 0300 LST because $^{137}Cs$ stayed around the KNPP under low wind speed and low boundary layer height. As for the emission conditions, EM1_3 and EM2_3 that had the maximum total number of particles showed the widest dispersion of $^{137}Cs$, while its highest mean concentration was estimated under the EM1_1 considering the relatively narrow dispersion and high emission rate. Conclusion: This study showed that even though an area may be located within the same radius around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant, the distribution and levels of $^{137}Cs$ concentration vary according to the change in time and space of weather conditions (the altitude of the atmospheric boundary layer, the horizontal and vertical distribution of the local winds, and the precipitation levels), the topography of the regions where $^{137}Cs$ is dispersed, the emission rate of $^{137}Cs$, and the number of emitted particles.
