Design and Application of Emergency Blockage System for Engine Part at IPPT and SQT (IPPT, SQT에서의 엔진부 비상정지 시스템 설계 및 운용)

  • A vertical hot-firing test facility was established to carry out the IPPT(Integrated Propulsion Performance Test) and SQT(Stage Qualification Test) of KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III). The components for actual launcher were mostly used, hence these tests were carried out under the condition of relatively lower safety margin. To perform hot-firing tests with the maximum safety, an engine emergency blockage system was investigated and applied. An emergency blockage system using combustion chamber pressures and acceleration signals was set up to monitor ignition delay and fail, flame out, propellant feeding status, unstable combustion and excessive structural vibration. With such a system, the test safety could be secured by rapid judgement and follow-up measures, which made IPPT and SQT be safely completed.

  • A Test Facility was established to carry out the integrated propulsion performance tests(IPPT). To perform IPPT's with maximum safety, an emergency blockage system was investigated. An emergency blockage system using combustion chamber pressure and acceleration signals was set up to monitor ignition delay and fail, flame out, propellant feeding status, unstable combustion and excessive structural vibration.   • The analysis has been performed on the blockage effect at the propellant flow passage in a liquid rocket engine. This simulates an example of emergency situation where flow passage is partially blocked. The analysis method has been validated by predicting the pump head and flow rate within 1% precision against the measured data of turbopump-gas generator coupled test. When the oxidizer passage is reduced it is predicted that the mixture ratio decreases, the oxidizer pump head increases and the gas generator pressure increases. When the fuel passage is reduced it is predicted that the mixture ratio increases, fuel flow rate decreases and the fuel pump head increases.

  • A 5-year-old castrated male Golden Retriever dog weighing 15 kg presented with evidence of intestinal intussusception. The patient had cachexia and severe dehydration before being referred to our department. Ultrasound imaging revealed a target sign indicative of intestinal intussusception. Emergency surgery was performed shortly after diagnosis. After a successful surgery, the patient was hospitalised for postoperative care. Initial treatment was aimed at the reversion of dehydration and the provision of adequate nutrition. Fluid therapy and central parenteral nutrition were administered via the peripheral and central venous catheters, respectively. Ten days postoperatively, swelling and edema were observed in the head and neck. Ultrasound and computed tomography confirmed complete blockage of the cranial vena cava due to thrombosis, which consequently obstructed both the left and right jugular veins. For treatment, dalteparin and tissue plasminogen activator were administered. However, the patient lost all of its vital function on the daybreak of postoperative day 11. Venous thrombus formation secondary to central parenteral nutrition application via the central line is a rare but possible complication. Veterinarians who are concerned about taking care of patients receiving CPN through the central line should keep the possibility of venous thrombus formation in mind.
