  • In accordance with the Cambodian government's poverty reduction policy, the Krang Ponley Water Resources Development Project was selected and has been carried out as a priority to develop the northwest areas of Phnom Penh since early 2003. Rehabilitation and new construction of water supply system such as embankments, canals and hydraulic structures are urgently needed for stable water supply, hydropower generation and flood damage reduction within the project area. The completion of the project is expected to be extremely helpful in the economic development of Cambodia as well as to improving the economic conditions of the residents in the project area.

  • On behalf of hazard mitigation, cases of investigation methods on levee are described. In general, failures of levee are caused by piping, water leakage through ground under the levee in Kimpo, Ilsan etc. Several phenomena against levees should be protected through consideration of analysis and quality control stage during construction. In this paper, protection methods against failures should be investigated by case studies.

  • This Study aims to demonstrate how much flood vulnerability in urban area changed for the past 32 years by using the panel model. At the same time, this study strives to determine the primary factors and to construct an effective counter-plan by means of empirical research. After selecting research hypotheses based on considerations of issues concerning causes for urban flooding, their relevance is put to the test by conducting empirical research in individual case locations. This research verifies the four research hypotheses by using one-way error component regression model. In conclusion, this research has shown that urban land use and local characteristics act as significant flood determinants, with forests acting to reduce flood dangers. Moreover, constructing embankments can no longer represent a reliable flood control policy. The changes in future flood control policies need to incorporate local characteristics and to minimize natural destruction, so that humans and nature can coexist through environmentally friendly flood management policies.

  • In this study, the train-induced vibration was measured at many locations at/around the actual service lines and the data base was constructed using the measurement results. The characteristics of train induced ground vibration was categorized and the empirical ground vibration estimating equations were developed. On the ground area (level grounds, embankments, cut sections), the vibration estimating equations were developed in terms of ground vibration level which was related with the distance from the source. Especially for the cut section areas, the vibration levels were expressed with the vibration receiving point expressed by the ratio of vertical distance to horizontal distance(V/H) from the source. As a result, when V/H is 0.96, the vibration estimating equation gives a minimum vibration level.

  • The stability of an embankment Impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment. To evaluate the accurate safety factor of an embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change (drawdown) of reservoir level Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient Ⅰ. If a piezometer is inserted into a body of embankment, the level to which free water rises is a measure of the energy at that point. From model test result, it is possible to calculate safety factors of earth embankment. To assure the validity of this research, tests were conducted with numerical experimental models. And the experiment models were constructed with slopes of 1:1.0, 1:1.5, 1:2.0, 1:2.5. Analysis of experimental results, seepage force was analyzed according to downstream time, internal friction angle and cohesion, respectively.

  • This thesis investigated the variation of the seepage line of earth structure when the water level rises and drawdowns and compare this with the hither to published formula. And, analysised by a vector in embankment model's seepage velocity of followed rises and drawdowns. And, by the experimental method find difference point per follow drawdown and rises in the same model.

  • Interest to basal reinforced piled embankments is increasing recently due to their rapid construction and reliability. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to determine effects of pile properties, reinforcement stiffness, embankment properties and soft soil properties into settlements, pressures and excess pore water pressure development and dissipations. Results which are obtained by using one-layer reinforcement during construction are compared with the results obtained by using two-layer reinforcement during construction. Finite element method is used during the parametric study. Second layer of reinforcement is placed in five different positions in order to reveal effects of reinforcement position into behaviour. Traffic load is also taken into consideration during the study. Differences between the results without presence of traffic loading and with presence of traffic loading is stated in this the study.

  • This article is summary of 'Korean Green New Deal' project which strives to revive Korea's Top 4 rivers for the next four years, between 2009 and 2012. The purpose of this project is balanced national development and recovered regional economy, creating new jobs. Details of the 'Korean Green New Deal' include means to reinforce obsolete embankments and to recover the river ecosystem by maintaining sedimentary soil, to install small- to middle-sized dams and flood control reservoirs and to establish eco-friendly reservoir for emergency water supplies. The project is expected to generate 190,000 new employee and create 23 trillion won worth production inducement effect, contributing in the revival of regional economies.

  • When earth structures such as dykes or embankments are constructed on very soft clay foundation, unexpectedly large deformations of earth structures as well as clay foundation are encountered during and after construction. The final constructed section is composed of a portion of embankment above the existing ground level and that which penetrated into the soft foundation soil. This study is aimed to correctly estimate the shape of earth structures which penetrate some depth into the soft clay foundation. In this study the methods to predict penetration depth and deformation shape of embankment section after dumping of construction material. Model tests were carried out to prove the developed theory and FEM analysis. And when the mat is added, reinforcement effect was markedly noticed.

  • Analyses, in which load was regarded as instant load and gradual step load, respectively, were performed with data measured on a gradually loaded field, and the results were inspected to find the effect of load conditions, and the final settlements which were predicted by Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, and Monden's methods were compared with each other. Settlement curves in which load was regarded as instant load and gradual step load being to coincide at twice the time of duration of embankment. On the ground installed vertical drain, from the results of Hyperbolic, Tan's, Asaoka's, Monden's, Curve fitting I, and Curve fitting II (simple, carrillo) methods it was concluded that Asaoka, Curve fitting I, and Curve fitting II methods are reliable for prediction final settlement with back analysis.
