  • Soil mixture using bentonite as a cutoff material is used a lot for various structures such as landfills, banks and dams as cutoff materials. But seepage water is expected to seep since shear failure of filter layer occurs due to external load, embankment load when constructed. Generally, only coefficient of permeability of Soil Mixture is considered irrespective of the changes of intensity on amount of additives. This research is to study on how the changes of amount of bentonite affects permeability and strength of soil mixture. So successive experiments for measuring permeability and strength were conducted as the amount of bentonite changes from 0 to 4%, mixing with the bed material and then making specimens. Around construction site of B dam. As a result, 2.085E-07 cm/sec was shown when the amount of Soil Mixture was 4%. It is proved that unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength increase as the amount of bentonite increases, but saturation shear strength of bentonite soil mixture from the CD experiment is hardly influenced by the amount of bentonite.

  • The Taechong Dam completed in 1980 is a composite dam at which a junction was formed partly by butting the core against the end face of the concrete gravity section and partly by the core overlapping the upstream face of the concrete. In order to evaluate the performance of the junction, the interfaces between the concrete dam and core of the embankment dam were well instrumented with total pressure cells and piezometers. A nonlinear incremental finite element analysis simulating its construction behaviour was carried out under plane strain conditions. Material parameters for the core are determined from triaxial tests on the specimens, sampled in the quarry site and compacted to the field dry density at the field moisture content. Material parameters for the filter, transition materials and the rockfill are estimated from literature. When compared with the earth pressures measured at the interfaces, the analytical results show good agreement in the core, however, there are some discrepancy in the shell. A nonlinear model for pore pressure response is used successfully to predict the pore pressures at the interface in the core.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of pressure drainage for geotextile, small-scale model tests were carried out for the horizontal and vertical geotextile drain to accelerate consolidation of foundation under embankment for the purpose of foundation reinforcement. According to the result of this study, the accumulative drainage discharge is found to increase as compressive stress of geotextile increases with logarithmic function. The drainage discharge under each step of compressive stress linearly increases with the increase of hydraulic head and its increasing rate is smaller when the compressive stress is higher. The drainage discharge shows to be greater when the number of geoteztile layers is more and the foundation material is finer. The relationship between transmissivity of geogextile and drainage discharge has positive correlation and the rate of increase is appeared to be the same regardless of foundation material and hydraulic head. And it proves that the drainage capacity of geotextile drain is determined by the transmissivity of geoteztile.

  • The internal erosion due to poor compaction of the material was the main cause of collapse of the embankment in Korea. The assessment of the compaction state of the dam body was a very important check in the safety diagnosis of the embankment. In this study, the correlation between dynamic cone penetration test and plate loading test which is the most typical compaction evaluation technique was analyzed to verify the applicability of the dynamic cone penetration test in evaluating the compaction state of the dam body. The standard penetration tests were carried out six times to define soil properties and depth of the test site. The spatial distributions were obtained by the Kriging method after 15 times of plate loading tests and 47 times of dynamic cone penetration tests. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the spatial distribution of the plate loading test and the dynamic cone penetration test spatial distribution at the constant penetration depth was calculated. The load distribution in the plate loading test and the blow counts at penetration depths of 5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm in the dynamic cone penetration test showed a weak positive correlation.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the possibility a utilization of the tertiary mudstone in Pohang as road subsoil material through pilot experiments on the road embankment structure. This mudstone is an unconsolidated rock that is distributed in the soft rock sedimentary layer, the tertiary layer of the Cenozoic, and causes physical problems such as slaking, swelling, and reduced shear strength and chemical problem like acid drainage. In order to solve various complex problems, an laboratory mixing test was conducted, and the optimal mixing conditions of the tertiary mudstone (90%), composite slag (steel making 70%, blast furnace 30%), and neutralization and coating agent treatment were derived. In order to prove its utilization, a real-scale road embankment structure was constructed and tests were conducted for each section. The pre-processing section is stable due to the design of optimal mixing conditions, while in post-processing section, natural weathering proceeded rapidly, and structural problems were concerned. Since the effect of neutralizing and coating agents was confirmed in temporary-staking section, the neutralizing and coating agents can be applied during the temporary storage period.

  • Recently PBD method, one of acceleration of consolidation methods is used in the soft ground to shorten consolidation time for fast settlement during construction. It is economical and easy to work. Discharge capacity of PBD is sensitive in proportion to thickness of soft ground layer, and drainage of PBD declines due to disturbance effect in surrounding ground by mandrel used for vertical drainage setting and setting machines and type. Also, deviation of discharge capacity is large according to ground condition, construction condition and soil properties. In addition, when embankment loading is not conducted instantly after PBD setting due to rain or lack of embankment material supply, it causes leaving period problems. But cause and analysis of those problems for discharge capacity is lack. So, in this test, ground improvement and discharge capacity is investigated by implementing composite discharge capacity test for analysis of an effect factor of PBD discharge capacity with leaving period. After fixing the vertical drain on a cylindrical cylinder, put churned sample into the cylinder. Then leave 0day, 30day, 60day and 90day. And then, load following the loading step of 30, 70 and 120kPa using a pressure device. As a result, the longer leaving period, discharge capacity is reduced. It is caused by a decrease of discharge area caused by creep transformation moisture absorption of PBD filter after long leaving period.

  • This study represents basic research into the utilization of mixed ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from the ash pond of the Taean Thermal Power Plant as a construction material. We conducted physical and mechanical experiments on the mixed ash and examined its engineering characteristics in terms of its use as a material for road landfill and structure backfill. We evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics of the ash by performing tests to determine specific gravity, maximum and minimum density, liquid limit and plastic limit, grain size distribution, composition (by X-ray diffraction), and loss on ignition. We also evaluated the mechanical characteristics by testing for permeability, compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression. The experiments on the mixed ash yielded a specific gravity of 2.18-2.20, dry density of $9.38-13.32\;kN/m^3$, modified CBR of 16.5%-21%, permeability coefficient of 1.32 to $1.89-10^{-4}cm/sec$, and drained friction angle of $36.43^{\circ}-41.39^{\circ}$. The physical and mechanical properties of the mixed ash do not meet the quality standards stipulated for road landfill and structure backfill materials. Mixed ash with a high content of fly ash failed to meet some of the quality standards. Therefore, in order to utilize the mixed ash as a material for road landfill and structure backfill, it is necessary to improve its properties by mixing with bottom ash.

  • In this research, laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the engineering properties of Light-Weight Air Foamed Soil (LWAS) based on silty clays with the animal foaming agent and cement. LWAS has been used as an embankment material over soft ground for road and side extension of the existing road. In field, unit weight and flow value is measured right after producing in mixing plant in order to control the quality of LWAS, and laboratory tests are carried out to confirm the quality through compressive strength of LWAS as well. In this research, direct estimation of the specification requirement of strength using flow values in field is the main purpose of the study together with other characteristics. From the test results, it can be seen that flow values increase with the initial water content and unit weight increases with the depth due to material segregation. Compared to the upper specimen, lower end of 60 cm specimen shows about 2 times higher compressive strength. Relationship between flow values and normalized factor presented by Yoon & Kim (2004) was presented. With that relationship, compressive strength can be predicted from flow values in field. From the relationship, the normalized factor was calculated. Thereafter calculated compressive strengths according to the flow values were compared to measured strengths in the laboratory. The higher the initial water content of the dredged soil has, the better relationship between predicted and measured shows. Therefore it is necessary to predict the compressive strength in advance through the relationship between the flow value and the normalized factor to reflect it in the design stage.

  • With the increase of steel production research interest on the recycling of slag as a by-product also increases steadily. Currently in Korea a lot of researches on blast-furnace slag have been made. However, the researches on the steel slag have been rarely made. Also, a research of steel slag, especially the use of oxidation furnace slag as aggregates for concrete progress, is performing actively, but the research results on the furnace slag are almost nothing. Recently, the research about the furnace slag as backfill material and embankment material confirmed the possibility of the clay soil amendment. Therefore, the object of this study is to review the possibility as civil engineering materials for soil improvement and to find the optimum mixture ratio of furnace slag. This research analyzed the ingredient component of the reduced slag by SEM, XRF, XRD tests and examined the strength increase using unconfined compression tests when the clay and reduced slag are mixed each other. Through this test, the definite strength increase is confirmed according to the mixture of the reduced slag and the possibility of soil improvement is also confirmed based on this result. The object of the study is both utilizing the by-product for civil engineering purpose and effective recycling by the application of the furnace slag for soil improvement.

  • Only a few studies have been conducted using reduced slag as recycled material. The reduced slag in electric furnace is produced as a by-product in making a steel and a few applications of the reduced slag as expensive additives and bonding materials or as the stabilized soils was reported. The purpose of this study is to present the feasibility of the reduced slag as recycled material, especially, in a field of civil engineering. In order to achieve the purpose experiments such as SEM and XRF analysis was conducted for the reduced slag in electric furnace. Based on the results various geotechnical experiments were conducted to know engineering properties of slag-soil mixtures. Weathered soils and clay are mixed with reduced slag for various ratios. As the ratio of reduced slag to weathered soil increases, the maximum dry unit weight of the mixture decreased with increasing optimum moisture content. The results indicates that there is no effect on a reduced slag by compaction efforts. The shear strengths of the weathered soil-slag mixtures are slightly higher or similar to those of weathered soils. The permeability of the weathered soil-slag mixtures is similar to that of silty or sandy soils. Therefore, it is possible to use the mixtures as embankment or backfill materials in the fields. The unconfined strength of the mixtures of reduced slag and clay is higher than that of clay and it tends to increase with the curing time. Therefore it can be used to improve the soft ground.
