  • AC4C alloy casts in the metallic mold, zircon sand mold, silica sand mold and shell mold with the pouring temperatures of 680, 710 and $740^{\circ}C$ have been investigated. The tensile strength, elongation and hardness of AC4C alloy castings have been influenced by the kind of molds used. The mechanical properties in zircon sand mold castings were greater than those in other sand mold castings, but were inferior to the properties in metallic mold castings. Eutectic Si particle size and DAS were increased in the order of metallic mold, ziron sand mold, silica sand mold and shell mold. Also, they were increased with the increase of pouring temperatures. DAS, eutectic Si particle size and grain size decreased with the increase of mechanical properties as the cooling rate increased. The eutectic Si particle size and DAS of AC4C alloy castings after T6 treatment were decreased in as-cast. The variation of eutectic Si particle size has been effected on the tensile strength, elongation and fractured surface.

  • Effect of surface roughness and microstructure of the specimen on tensile properties of Ni-Al bronze casting has been investigated. surface roughnesses of the tensile test specimen of interest are in range of 0.1 to 2.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra obtained by changing machining conditions. Fracture of the Ni-Al bronze casting initiated at the surface and propagated in a brittle manner during tensile tests. Tensile elongation value of the casting was strongly dependent on the surface roughness range studied, while tensile and yield strengths were almost independent on it. The elongation value was almost constant up to the surface roughness of 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra, and then decreased in a linear manner with an increase in Ra value up to 2.0 ${\mu}m$. However, tensile strength and hardness were strongly dependent on the microstructure, especially ${\alpha}$ phase fraction, and were decreased with increasing ${\alpha}$ phase fraction in microstructure. It is, therefore, recommended that decrease of surface roughness up to 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in Ra, shrinkage porosity and ${\alpha}$ phase are required in order to obtain good tensile properties for Ni-Al bronze casting.

  • Effect of martensite on the mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron was investigated after obtained the martensite by subzero treatment. Retained austenite was transformed to martensite by subzero treatment, and with decreasing subzero treatment temperature, volume fraction of martensite was increased. With increasing of the volume fraction of martensite, tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased, ratio of increasing of strength and decreasing of elongation was higher in case of specimens with lot's of Cu contents. With increasing of the volume fraction of martensite, hardness slowly increased until only about 5% and it rapidly increased in a straight proportion when it is above 5%, while impact value was rapidly decreased until about 7% but it had a little change when it is above 7%.

  • In this study, the casting/forging process was applied to the Shift-Fork, a manual transmission part of automobiles. In the casting experiments, the effects of additives, Sr, Ti+B and Mg, on the mechanical properties and the microstructure of a cast preform were investigated. When 0.03% Sr were added into the molten aluminum alloy, the finest silicon-structure was observed in the cast preform and the highest tensile strength and elongation accomplished. And when 0.2% Ti+B were added into the molten Al-Si alloy, the highest values of tensile strength were obtained. The maximum hardness was in case of 0.2% Mg. In the forging experiment, it was confirmed that the optimal configuration of the cast preform could be predicted by FE analysis. To minimize the cost as the press size, the compact shape of preform was proposed to reduce the volume of flash. The modification of shape in designing preform was performed to attain a satisfactory performance in the areas where the mechanical strength were more required. By using FVM(Finite Volume Method) software, it was verified that a proposed casting design was available. To identify the relationship between effective strain and mechanical properties of the final forged product, the compression test was performed. As the result, the tensile strength and elongation of a cast preform were much higher than before forging. The minimum forging temperature was found 40$0^{\circ}C$ to save heating time.

  • The influence of transformation cycles (${\alpha}^{\prime}{\leftrightarrow}{\gamma}^{\prime}$) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of lath and lenticular martensites has been studied in Fe-Ni alloys. The width of lath in Fe-15%Ni alloy decreased with increasing the number of transformation cycles, while no appreciable change in dislocation density inside the lath was observed. In case of Fe-31%Ni alloy, a number of dislocations were additionally introduced into the martensite plate after the transformation cycling. Tensile strength and Vickers hardness of lath martensite decreased with the increase in number of transformation cycles, whereas those of lenticular martensite increased up to 1 cycle and then remained constant. Elongation of two alloys was deteriorated after 1 transformation cycling, corresponding to the tensile strength. But the decrement of elongation in Fe-31%Ni alloy was smaller than that in Fe-15%Ni alloy.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of carbon on mechanical properties with different austempering conditions of high carbon(0.7~1.3wt.%C)-2.0wt.%Si steels. The specimens were austenitized at 850, 925 and $1020^{\circ}C$, and austempered at 260, 320 and $380^{\circ}C$ for the various period of time from 3 min to 300 min. After heat treatment, the evolution of stage I and stage II was identified with optical microscope, XRD and hardness test. When the austempering temperature was $260^{\circ}C$, the microstructure consisted of the lower ausferrite while the upper ausferrite micro-structure was formed at $380^{\circ}C$. As the austempering temperature increases from 260 to $380^{\circ}C$, the tensile strength decreases and elongation increases. In addition, when carbon content increases, tensile strength and elongation decrease.

  • Effects of Ti addition and homogenizing heat treatment on the mechanical properties in Cu-Zn-Al alloy (high strength yellow brass) were investigated. Grain refinement was successfully achieved by Ti addition. The microstructure, which was composed of island or fine feather-like branched Ti compounds was changed to feather-like eutectic microstructure as the content of Ti increased. The highest hardness value was obtained for 0.5 wt.% Ti specimen and the second was Ti non-added specimen in as-cast condition. The highest tensile strength was obtained for 0.5 wt.% Ti specimen. Because of the presence of cast defects and worse castability, tensile strength decreased as the content of Ti increased. Elongation increased with increasing homogenizing time and temperature; remarkable increase was obtained for $400^{\circ}C$ homogenizing temperature in the 0.5 wt.% Ti specimen. For $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ homhgenizing, temperature, high elongation was obtained in 2 and 4 wt.% Ti specimen.

  • The effect of$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas sintering atmosphere on the carbon content and mechanical properties during the metal injection molding process of carbonyl iron-nickel powder was studied. The carbon content of the specimen after debinding in the pure$N_{2}$atmosphere appeared 0.78 wt%. After showing the maximum value of 1.48 wt.% in the debinding atmosphere of 10%$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas mixture, the carbon content of the debinded specimen decreased gradually with increasing the$H_2$content in the$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas mixture. The carbon contents of the sintered specimen were 0.46~0.63wt% in Na gas atmosphere, while they appeared extremely low above 40%$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas atmosphere. The relative sintered density increased abruptly from 88~90% to 93~96% with the addition of Ni, while the density nearly unchanged above 2% Ni addition. The sintered density increased with increasing the fraction of$H_{2} in H_{2}/N_{2}$gas mixture. Tensile strength and hardness increased, and elongation decreased with increasing carbon and Ni content. In spite of high carbon content of 0.63 wt%, the superior elongation value of 10% was shown.

  • The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of normalized and quenched 3.60wt%C-2.60wt%C ductile cast iron poured into shell stack mold were investigated. The strength and hardness of as-cast specimen were increased and the elongation of it was decreased with the additions of Mn, Cu and Sn. The strength and hardness were increased with the addition of 0.40wt%Mo and then rather decreased with the increased addition of 0.80wt%. The strength and hardness were increased with normalizing treatment and the strengths of normalized specimens were increased slightly with the addition of alloying elements except Mo. Meanwhile the yield strength of the normalized specimen was increased slightly with the addition of Mo, the tensile strength was not changed much. Meanwhile the hardness and strength of the quenched specimen were slightly increased with the addition of Mn, those were almost not changed with the amount added. The tensile strength of the quenched specimen with larger diameter, when the Cu had been added, and the tensile and yield strengths of them, when Mo had been added, were increased with the addition of alloying element. On the other hand, those were not changed with the amount added. For the case of specimen with smaller diameter, there were no effects of these two elements. When Sn had been added, the strength of hardened specimen with larger diameter was slightly increased with the amount added. However, that with smaller diameter was rather decreased with it. The effect of specimen diameter on the strength of quenched specimen with the addition of Cu, Mo and Sn was reduced.

  • The 22%Cr-5%Ni-3%Mo duplex and 18%Cr-8%Ni austenitic stainless steels have been nitrogen permeated under the $1Kg/cm^2$ nitrogen gas atmosphere at the temperature range of $1050^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen-permeated duplex and austenitic stainless steels showed the gradual decrease in hardness with increasing depth below surface. The duplex stainless steel showed nitrogen pearlite at the outmost surface and austenite single phase in the center after nitrogen permeation treatment, while the obvious microstructural change was not observed for the nitrogen-permeated austenitic stainless steel. After solution annealing the nitrogen-permeated stainless steels(NPSA treatment) at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, the hardness of the duplex and austenitic stainless steels was constant through the 2 mm thickness of the specimen, and the ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase of duplex stainless steel changed to austenite single phase. Tensile strengths and elongations of the NPSA-treated duplex stainless steel remarkably increased compared to those of solution annealed (SA) duplex stainless steel due to the solution strengthening effect of nitrogen and the phase change from a mixture of ferrite and austenite to austenite single phase, while the NP-treated austenitic stainless steel displayed the lowest value in elongation due to inhomogeneous deformation by the hardness difference between surface and interior.
