  • Angiomyolipoma of the liver is a rare benign tumor that's composed of variable mixtures of adipose tissue, smooth muscle and thick-walled blood vessels. We report here on the imprint cytologic features of a hepatic angiomyolipoma in a 47-year-old man. The smears showed spindle and epithelioid tumor cells in clusters, trabeculae and single cells. The spindle cells had elongated, cigar-shaped nuclei with finely granular chromatin and fibrillary cytoplasm. The epithelioid cells had round nuclei with a moderate amount of cytoplasm. Any adipose tissue was not found. Immunohistochemically, both the spindle and epithelioid cells revealed cytoplasmic positivity for smooth muscle actin and HMB-45.

  • Plasma bubbles that occur in the equatorial F-region make up one of the most distinguishing phenomena in the ionosphere. Bubbles represent plasma depletions with respect to the background ionosphere, and are the major source of electron density irregularities in the equatorial F-region. Such bubbles are seen as plasma depletion holes (in situ satellite observations), vertical plumes (radar observations), and emission-depletion bands elongated in the north-south direction (optical observations). However, no technique can observe the whole three-dimensional structure of a bubble. Various aspects of bubbles identified using different techniques indicate that a bubble has a "shell" structure. This paper reviews the development of the concepts of "bubble" and "shell" in this context.

  • In this paper, the relationship between electrical breakdown properties and the molecular orientation owing to elongation was investigation from electrical conductivity, electrical breakdown strength and X-ray diffraction wag investigated. The changes of the stretching direction, from an a-axis orientation(at high elongation) to a c-axis orientation(at high elongation), as the elongation increases, were determined from X-ray diffraction patterns. These results suggest that the tendency for a decrease in the trap density at a higher elongation is consistent with a continuous change of the reorientation from the a-axis to the c-axis as the elongation increases.

  • This paper examined the effects of specimen elongation on the electrostatic electrification voltages when polypropylene film specimens with 500%, 650% and 700% elongations were rotated at 1550 rpm. The results were as follows. The decease of electrification voltage was not measured according to the time elapse, in case of elongated specimens with 70% environment humidity. As +10 kV was applied to the specimens with 650% elongations, the electrostatic electrification voltages were increased by the effect of environment humidity (1.23~1,25 kV at 50~60% humidity, and 1,46 kV at 70% humidity). The voltages were decreased to 1.2 kV at 700% elongation. As -10 kV was applied to the specimens with 500%, 650% and 700% elongations, the electrostatic electrification voltages were negatively increased with the increase of environment humidity and the elongation of specimens.

  • The tropical tasar silkworms, Antheraea mylitta (D) produce famous silk 'Kosa' in central part of India. Due to outdoor rearing it became susceptible to viral infection including cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV). The common mode of entry of cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus is per os and cause gresserie disease to the larvae. Histopathological studies elucidated the insect CPV virus produces infective polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIBs) in the midgut cell cytoplasm of virus infected fifth instar larvae. The PIBs multiply enormously in the cytoplasm without invading the nucleus. Ultrastructural studies confirmed the pathological effects of CPV on in midgut cell cytoplasm. The multiplication of polyhedral inclusion bodies took place into the vacuoles and form virogenic stromata in the cytoplasm of cells. However, the encapsulations of polyhedral inclusion bodies into the polyhedrin protein occurred and polyhedra were released into the lumen. At the late stage of infection, cells showed the regressed cytoplasmic organelles with large vacuoles and elongated mitochondria. Hence, the horizontal transmission of CPV causing the midgut cells disintegration in the tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta (D) confirmed during infection.

  • Two diogenid hermit crab species, Dardanus lagopodes and Diogenes deflectomanus, are newly reported from Korea. Dardanus lagopodes is distinguished from the other species of genus Dardanus in Korea by having setae with cream-colored tips on the cephalothorax and the following characteristics: ocular peduncles somewhat longer than antennular peduncles, and the pereopod without a longitudinal sulcus and scute-like projections. Diogenes deflectomanus is similar to D. nitidimanus but can be distinguished by having the fixed finger of the left cheliped bent slightly downwardly and the following characteristics: slightly shorter ocular peduncle, elongated left cheliped with small granules on the surface, right cheliped without calcareous teeth on the cutting edge of the dactylus, and the minute spine of post-median margin of the telson is not well developed. The geographical distributions of these two species are extended by the present study. In particular, D. deflectomanus in the current study is the first report outside Chinese waters. Now, 20 species of the family Diogenidae are known in Korean waters.

  • Gas nitriding is a surface hardening process where nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a ferrous alloy. During fusion welding of nitrided carbon steel, the nitride inside weld metal is dissolved and generates nitrogen gas, which causes porosities - blow holes and pits. In this study, several laser welding processes such as weaving welding, two-pass welding, dual beam welding and laser-arc hybrid welding were investigated to elongate the weld pool to enhance nitrogen gas evacuation. The surface pits were successfully eliminated with elongated weld pool. However blowholes inside the weld metal were effective reduced but not fully disappeared.

  • The Drosophila auditory system consists of four large basal segments: the arista, the funiculus, the pedicel, and the scape. When an acoustic stimulus is applied to the arista and the funiculus their mechanical vibrations are transmitted to chordotonal neurons in Johnston's organ where mechanoelectric transduction arises. We study the mechanotransduction mechanism in the Drosophila auditory system by using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) and extracellular electrophysiology. We find that large and small peaks appear alternatively and that the antenna vibration is asymmetric depending on whether the pedicel and the scape are fixed. Interestingly, we find that this asymmetric vibration accompanies the alternating neural peak structure. Here, we propose a mathematical model to explain the alternating peak structure by using a model consisting of two opposing neurons that are modeled as strings. Generally, strings have tension only when they are elongated. This property allows the alternating neural peaks for asymmetric antenna motion.

  • Morpho-histogenesis of fruit sculpture and dehiscence in Thespesia populnea is described. The fruit wall is differentiated into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp. The epicarp is stony, rind-like, 30 to 35 layers thick and derived from outer epidermis, sub-epidermis and ground parenchyma of the ovary wall. The spherical and/of tangentially elongated, thick walled cells of epicarp are interspersed with radial bands of sclereids. The mesocarp is a product of the inner zone of ground parenchyma. At maturity 20 to 25 layers of thin walled parenchyma of mesocarp appear sinuous of disorgnized. The innermost 1 to 3 layers of ground parenchyma and sub-epidermis and inner epidermis form 35 to 40 layers thick endocarp. Due to the differentiation of fibrous tissue in the projection of median plane of carpel wall and a complete ring of fibrous zone in the endocarp, the dry capsule of Thespesia populnea dehises partially in loculicidal fashion.
