  • Testes from the drake and the gander have been examined by the electron microscopy in thin sections in order to examine the spermiogenesis and the structure of spermatozoa. The spermiogenesis can be divided into three stages: early spermatid, nuclear elongation, and matured spermatid. In the early spermatid of the drake, there are thread-like material in the nucleus, a prominent nuclear envelope around the nucleus, and big lumens in the cytoplasm. The shape of the gander's mitochondria in the early spermatid is slender compared to that of the drake, and the inner membrane of the mitochondria is thicker than the outer membrane. The distal centriole of the drake and the gander in the early spermatid is a long hollow cylinder form. In the nuclear elongation stage, elongated nucleus forms two or three cross sections in one spermatid cell and it is surrounded by the amorphous sheath. The nucleus of the matured spermatid is compact and its apical end is covered with acrosome cap and acrosome spine. The axoneme is surrounded by the amorphous material.

  • Four specimens of Cynoglossus larvae (3.2-7.3 mm in notochord length, NL) collected from the middle Yellow Sea in August, 2008 were identified as Cynoglossus joyneri larvae based on morphological characteristics; (1) the two elongated dorsal fin rays on the parietal region, (2) protruded abdomen, (3) no melanophores on the mediolateral trunk and tail. Larva of 3.2 mm NL is compressed with a little big head and tapering, long tail. Larva of 7.0 mm NL has 115 dorsal fin and 85 anal fin rays, which are the same to those of adult. Larva of 7.3 mm NL tended to have concave part in the fringe of forehead, in which left-side eye may move to the other side.

  • A histochemical and ultrastructural study on the stomach epithelium of a land snail Nesiohelix samarangae was carried out during the period of June 1996 to May 1997. The stomach epithelium is simple columnar dpithelium and is consisted of three types of columnar cells, Type 1 cell which is majority in number has a brush border with microvilli on the free surface of the cell and contains numerous secretory granules supposed to be neutral mucopolysaccharide. Type 2 cell, elongated conical in shape. is rarely found in the dpithelium. This cell also has a brush border with microvilli on its free surface and contains well developed rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, and secretory granules in various electron densities. This cell seems to produce both of acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides. Type 3 cell, which is morphologically similar to the Type 1 cell, has microvili and cilia on the free surface and exists in group only in the limited regions of the stomach.

  • Two-dimensional formulations for wind forces on elongated bodies, such as bridge decks, are reviewed and links with expressions found in two-dimensional airfoil theory are pointed out. The present research focus on indicial lift responses and admittance functions which are commonly used to improve buffeting analysis of bluff bodies. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis is used to derive these aerodynamic functions for various sections. The numerical procedure is presented and results are discussed which demonstrate that the particular shapes of these functions are strongly dependent on the evolution of the separated flows around the sections at the early stages.

  • A flocculent aggregate produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis in broths containing Tween 80, including MRS broth, had a microscopic structure of intertwined thread-like filaments. The filamentous structure was not elongated bacterial cells, but consisted of an organic solvent-soluble portion and an insoluble solid. L. lactis subsp. lactis grown at $25^{\circ}C$ for 15 days in tryptic soy broth with 0.1% Tween 80 and 1.0% malt extract produced 13 mg/l of flocculent aggregate, which contained 0.84 g/g of organic solvent-soluble component. The organic solvent-soluble part was identified as 10-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid.

  • Thermal spray technology has been used in many industrial application. Especially, thermal spray coating have been employed with the purposes of achieving better resistances in abrasion, heat and corrosion. In the previous studies on the thermal spray coating, thermal spray characteristics from the perspective of combustion engineering have not been investigated sufficiently, while the material characteristics of the coated substrates have been investigated widely. In this study, the effect of spray particles on the flame behavior was experimentally investigated. The amount of the injected particles was measured using the light scattering method and the temperature of the particles was estimated using a two-color method. Various flame-spray interactions were observed and it was found that the high temperature zone near the flame is elongated by particles density. Based on these results, the applicability of the light scattering method and the two-color method was discussed.

  • Dermoid cysts of the spinal canal are rare benign congenital tumors, accounting for $1{\sim}2%$ of all intraspinal tumors. We report a case of lumbar extramedullary cyst, combined with congenital sacral meningocele. The clinical features, characteristics on MRI, pathologic findings, and surgical treatment of such a rare extramedullary benign tumor is discussed with the relevant literature.

  • A single juvenile specimen of $Thunnus$ $alalunga$ (8.4 mm in standard length) of the Scombridae was collected from the southeast sea of Jeju Island ($127.7^{\circ}E$, $33.0^{\circ}N$) on August 18, 2011. It was identified as $T.$ $alalunga$ based on the following combination of morphological characters: snout elongated; melanophores focused on the dorsal spiny region, but no melanophores on the dorsal soft fin base, anal fin base or caudal region.

  • The chemical shift of SiOC film was observed according to the flow rate ratio. SiOC film has the broad main band of $880{\sim}1190cm^{-1}$ and the sharp Si-$CH_3$ bond at $1252cm^{-1}$, and the infrared spectra in the Si-O-C bond moved to low frequency according to the increasing of an oxygen flow rate. The chemical shift affected the carbon content in the SiOC film, and the decreasing of carbon atoms elongated the C-H bonding length, relatively. The main bond without the sharp Si-$CH_3$ bond at $1252cm^{-1}$ consisted of Si-C, C-O and Si-O bonds, and became the bonding structure of the Si-O-C bond.

  • Bora events over the Adriatic Sea and Black Sea are investigated by using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard the European Envisat satellite. These images show pronounced elongated patterns of increased sea surface roughness caused by bora winds. The comparison of the SAR images with wind fields derived from Quikscat data confirms that in all cases a strong northeasterly wind was blowing from the mountains onto the sea. It is shown that the SAR images reveal details of the spatial extent of the bora wind fields over the sea which cannot be obtained by other instruments. Furtheremore, also quantitative information on the wind field is extracted from the SAR images by using a wind scatterometer model.
