First Record of Two Urostyloid Ciliates (Spirotrichea: Urostylida: Urostyloidea) from Brackish Water in Korea

  • Two urostyloid ciliates, collected from brackish water in Korea, were identified as Diaxonella pseudorubra pseudorubra (Kaltenbach, 1960) Berger, 2006 and Pseudokeronopsis flava (Cohn, 1866) Wirnsberger, Larsen and Uhlig, 1987. The description was based on living, protargol impregnated specimens. These species are described as follows: Diaxonella pseudorubra pseudorubra: body size in vivo $145-230{\times}40-60\;{\mu}m$, elongated ellipsoidal in shape. Cytoplasm reddish and flexible. Adoral zone of membranelles occupied 30-40% of the body; composed of 33-44 membranelles; 1-3 frontoterminal cirri, 1-4 frontal row cirri, 4-6 buccal cirri, 6-10 transverse cirri. Midventral rows composed of 14-24 cirri, four left marginal rows, one right marginal row. Two kinds of cortical granules; the larger one is yellowish and the smaller one is reddish. Pseudokeronopsis flava: body size in vivo $150-210{\times}30-45\;{\mu}m$, elongated ellipsoidal shape. Cytoplasm yellowish and flexible. Adoral zone of membranelles occupied 25-30% of body; composed of 44-58 membranelles in number. Frontal cirri forming bicorona composed of 5-7 cirral pairs, 2-3 frontoterminal cirri, one buccal cirrus, and 2-3 transverse cirri. Midventral rows composed of 18-33 cirri, 34-53 left marginal cirri, and 40-58 right marginal cirri. Two kinds of cortical granules; the larger one is colorless and "blood-cell-shaped," and the smaller one is yellowish. Diaxonella pseudorubra pseudorubra is different from the most similar subspecies, D. pseudorubra pulchra, in cytoplasmic color and number of midventral cirri. Pseudokeronopsis flava is different from its most similar congeners in pigment granular color, number of bicorona, number of midventral cirri, and position of the contractile vacuole.

한국산 투라치과(Lampridiformes: Trachipteridae) 어류의 분류학적 재검토 (Taxonomic Review of the Family Trachipteridae (Lampridiformes) from Korea)

  • 본 연구는 2006년 6월부터 2008년 8월까지 우리나라 동해, 남해 및 제주도 주변 해역에서 채집된 투라치, Trachipterus ishikawae (Jordan and Snyder, 1901) 7개체, 홍투라치, Zu cristatus (Bonelli, 1820) 4개체 및 1미기록종인 Desmodema polystictum (Ogilby, 1897) 2개체의 형태형질을 조사하여 한국산 투라치과 어류의 분류학적 재검토를 실시하였다. 한국 미기록종인 D. polystictum는 배쪽 가장자리가 매끄럽고, 체측에 어두운 수십개의 둥근 반문이 산재하는 특징을 보여, 새로운 한국명으로 "점투라치"를 제안한다. 홍투라치는 제1~제6 등지느러미 연조 및 배지느러미 연조가 길게 신장된 특징을 나타내었다. 투라치는 배쪽 가장자리에 날카로운 돌기가 나 있으며, 체형은 가늘고 긴 일직선의 형태를 나타내었다. 계수형질에서는 등지느러미 연조수가 투라치(178~195개), 홍투라치(137~148개), 점투라치(125~130개) 순으로 많았고, 척추골수는 투라치(80~83개), 점투라치(72~74개), 홍투라치(64~68개) 순으로 많아 잘 구분되었다.

  • Fe powders with elongated and aggregated structure as heat pellet material for thermal battery applications were prepared by spray pyrolysis under various preparation conditions. The precursor powders with spherical shapes and hollow morphologies turned into Fe powders after reduction at a temperature of 615$^{\circ}C$ under 20% $H_2$/Ar gas. The powders had pure Fe crystal structures irrespective of the preparation conditions of the precursor powders in the spray pyrolysis. The morphologies and mean sizes of the Fe powders are affected by the preparation conditions of the precursor powders in the spray pyrolysis. Therefore, the ignition sensitivities and the burn rates of the heat pellets formed from the Fe powders prepared by spray pyrolysis are affected by the preparations of the precursor powders. The Fe powders prepared under the optimum preparation conditions have a BET surface area of 2.9 $m^2g^1$. The heat pellets prepared from the Fe powders with elongated and aggregated structure have a good ignition sensitivity of 1.1W and a high burn rate of 18 $cms^1$.

  • Eagle's syndrome is the term given to symtomatic elogation of the styloid process or mineralization of the stylohyoid or stylomandibular ligament. Since ossification of stylohyoid ligament at cadeva was fist described by De Manchetis in 1652 and Weinlecher described clinical symptom which produced by elongated styloid process and osteotomy of styloid process in 1872, Clinical symtom which include sensation of a foreign body on the pharynx, dysphagai, dysphonia, referred pain, and mouth opening disturbance was termed by Eagle as Eagle's syndrome. then, case reports of Eagle's syndrome are presented. in these cases, the patient's chief complaints included periauricular radiating pain, mouth opening disturbance, foreign body sensation, dysphagia, tenderness on the neck. Through vairous X-ray examination and palpation of tonsillar fossa, elongated styloid process were confirmed. Under the general anesthesia there were successfully removed out via transoral approach technique, described by Eagle. after resented styloid process, they were freed from the symptoms without further complication. Therefor we reported these cases treated by surgical resection of styloid process with good results.

포항시 우현동 두호층에서 산출된 Pleuronichthys sp. 화석 (Pleuronichthys sp. Fossils (Pleuronectidae) from the Duho Formation, Pohang Uhyeon-dong in Korea)

  • 포항시 마이오세 두호층에서 2개의 신생대 어류 화석들이 발견되었다. 두호층에서 발견된 이 어류 화석들은 다음과 같은 근거로 도다리속으로 동정되었다. 첫째, 앞쪽 등지느러미가 두개부 위까지 연장되어 뻗어있다. 둘째, 두개골에서 안와는 모두 오른쪽에 몰려있는 비대칭성을 갖는다. 셋째, 낚시 바늘 모양의 미설골을 지닌다. 넷째, 미설골의 좌골부가 꺾여있다. 다섯째, 후의쇄골이 존재한다. 여섯째, 척추체의 개수가 27개를 넘는다. 일곱째, 첫 번째 뒷지느러미 담기골이 연장되어 있다. 여덟째, 미설골의 내연부가 'c'자 형태를 갖는다. 아홉째, 분문돌기가 작거나 거의 없다. 열째, 몸에 여러 반점들이 존재한다. 도다리속 어류 화석은 동아시아에서 최초로 보고되는 것이다. 두 표본은 두개골의 비대칭성과 납작한 정도에서 해부학적 차이가 존재한다. 이는 가자미과 어류의 독특한 개체발생 단계를 나타내는 데, 그들은 표영성 생활 양식에서 저서성 생활 양식으로 전환할 때 위와 같은 해부학적 차이를 수반하기 때문이다.

$\alpha-SiC $seed의 첨가가 상압소결된 $\beta-SiC$의 미세구조와 파괴인성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of $\alpha-SiC $seed on microstructure and fracture toughness of pressureless-sintered $\beta-SiC$)

  • 소결조제로 Y 3Alo012를 첨가한 {3- SiC 분말에 seed로서 1 wt%의 a- SiC 분말을 첨 가한 시편과 첨가하지 않은 시편을 1950$^{\circ}$C, argon 분위기에서 0.5~4시간 동안 소결하였다. S Seed로써 1 wt% a-SiC 분말의 첨가는 소결 도중에 길게 자란 업자틀의 성장을 가속시켰고, a a- SiC seed를 첨가한 시편에서 더 조대한 미세구조가 얻어졌다 .. a-SiC seed를 첨가하여 4시간 동안 소결한 시편의 파괴인성은 7.5 MPa'ml/2이었고, seed를 첨가하지 않은 시편의 파괴인성은 6 6.1 MPa'm1/2이었다 .. Seed를 첨가한 시편의 높은 파괴인성은 조대한 미세구조에 포함된 길게 자란 입자들에 의한 균열가교 기구의 활발한 작용에 기인한다.

기계적 및 열적 처리된 PET 필름의 특성에 관한 연구 (The Study for the characteristics of mechanically and thermally treated PET films)

  • 여러 조건에서 제조된 poly(ethylene terephthalate) 필름 시편들로부터 열처리 및 냉연신 조건이 시편의 물성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 상온에서 만능시험기을 사용하여 미열처리 및 열처리된 시편들을 0.5에서 500 mm/min의 cross-head 속도로 단계적 연신을 행한 결과, 약 50, 72 및 $129^{\circ}C$에서 열처리된 시편들의 응력-변형 곡선에서는 응력 진동이 발생되지만, 약 $83^{\circ}C$에서 30분 동안 열처리된 시편의 응력-변형 곡선에서는 응력 진동이 발생되지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 시차 주사 열량기를 사용하여 $10^{\circ}C$/min의 승온 속도에서 열분석을 행하였고, 시편들의 유리전이온도, 결정화 피크, 용융 잠열, 결정화도를 측정하였다. 1 Hz의 주파수대에서 $1.5^{\circ}C$/min의 승온 속도로 multiple-function internal friction pendulum으로 시편들의 동적 기계분석도 수행하였으며, 미열처리, 열처리 및 연신 시편들의 순서대로 탄성계수 값이 증가함을 알 수 있었다.

Expression of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Subunit Genes in Mouse Testis

  • Gonadotropins are heterodimers consisting an alpha chain ($Cg{\alpha}$) and a beta chain. Interestingly, presence of complicated $LH-{\beta}$ transcripts in rat testis was accidently found; testicular $LH-{\beta}$ transcripts were confined in seminiferous tubules to spermatids, and the translated products were localized in the elongated spermatids. We hypothesized that mouse testis has potential to produce the tissue specific $LH-{\beta}$ with similar structure to the rat testicular forms. To verify our hypothesis, we examined the adult mouse (ICR) testis using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. The PCR revealed the presence of the identical products in the reactions for three LH subunit types. The expected product sizes for mouse $Cg{\alpha}$ and $LH-{\beta}$ known as pituitary type were 224 bp and 503 bp, respectively. The testicular type $LH-{\beta}$ products were produced by a primer set based on the rat sequences, with unexpected size of 800 bp. Sequencing revealed that the proximal and distal parts (2-82 and 661- 773 bp, respectively) were homologous to rat testicular $LH-{\beta}$ cDNA, and middle part (83-660 bp) was a unique mouse-specific region. Both $Cg{\alpha}$ and $LH-{\beta}$ positive signals were in the round and elongated spermatids and mature sperms, and the $LH-{\beta}$ signals were more intense. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the presence and localization of the LH subunits in mouse testis. Further studies will be needed to understand the precise structure and function of mouse testicular LH.

The Morphometric Study for the Rolandic Fissure

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to characterize the Rolandic fissure[Rf] and was to identify the Rf using the surface bony landmarks which can be usually exposed on craniotomy. Methods : After morphological evaluation of the Rfs using 21 Korean adult formalin fixed cadavers, craniometric measurement was carried out from the surface bony landmarks of nasion, glabella, bregma, and lambda. Results : The Rfs of both hemispheres did not show the mirror image. The Rfs ran forward and downward toward the sylvian fissure keeping the mean angle of $67^{\circ}$ from mid-sagittal line as elongated S-shape in left and the elongated reverse S-shape in right hemisphere. Connections between the Rf and the longitudinal fissure and between the Rf and the sylvian fissure were found in 3 [7.1%] and 2 [4.8%] of 42 hemispheres, respectively. Most Rfs extended superiorly to 2-3mm lateral to the most superomedial surface of hemispheres and extended inferiorly to 3-5mm superior to the sylvian fissures. The mean distances from the nasion, glabella, bregma, and lambda to the most superomedial aspect of the Rf were $18.8{\pm}0.9cm,\;16.6{\pm}0.8cm,\;5.2{\pm}0.6cm$, and $6.9{\pm}1.0cm$, respectively. The mean distance measured between the Rf and the nasion using traditional method was $18.4{\pm}0.6cm$. Conclusion : The distance between the Rf and the nasion roughly correspond within the range of mean 4 mm compared with that measured by the traditional measurement. These data may be more helpful to delineate the Rf after the placement of drapes for craniotomy.

액장 소결에 의한 $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ 복합체의 제조와 특성 (Properties and Manufacture of the $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ Composited Densified by Liquid-Phase Sintering.)

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta-Sic$+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3(6:4wt%)$. In this microstructures, no reactions and elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with equiaxed $ZrB_2$, gains were observed between $\beta-SiC$ and $ZrB_2$, and the relative density was over 97.6% of the theoretical density. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealedmostly of $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$, and weakly $\beta-SiC$(15R) phase. The fracture toughness decreased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents and showed the highest of $6.37MPa.m^{\fraction ane-half}$ for composite added with 4wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$contents and showed the lowest of $1.51\times10^{-4}\Omega.cm$ for composite added with $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at $25^{\circ}C$. This reason is the increasing tendency of pore formation according to amount of liquid forming additives $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.
