  • An improved power supply for APD(Avalanche Photo Diode) with a received optical power monitoring circuit allows the received optical power increase temporary without of the degradation of the electrical signal. For the cost reduction and simple fabrication, an improved power supply has been proposed that it was designed for driving a APD as a receiving device of a wireless optical transmission system. It was demonstrated that it was possible to improve a dynamic range by compensating the temperature coefficient of the APD up to 1.0 V/$^{\circ}C$ through the power supply. Also, for an efficient transmission at the receiver end, a simple structure of a single cylindrical micro-lens configuration was used in conjunction with the laser diode to partially compensate a laser beam ellipticity. For this purpose, an astigmatism introduced by the micro-lens is utilized for the additional compensation of the beam ellipticity at the receiver end. In this paper, it is demonstrated that an efficient beam shaping is realized by using the proposed configuration consisting of the single lens attached to the laser diode.

  • A non-axisymmetric mass distribution in the galactic bulge (or bar) causes gas flow from the disk to the nuclear region, inducing intense star formation in the nucleus. We investigate the relation between the ellipticity of the bulge and the presence of a nuclear starburst by using a volume-limited sample of galaxies. We use 1,680 spiral galaxies with Mr < -19.5 at 0.02 <= z < 0.05 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We find that the occurrence of nuclear starburst has a moderate correlation with bulge ellipticity in intermediate-type spiral galaxies (morphology classes Sab~Sb) in low galaxy number density environments. In high galaxy number density environments, close encounters and mergers between galaxies can cause gas inflow to the nuclear region even without the presence of non-axisymmetric bulges.

  • We have developed a new device, Plate-to-CCD Convertor (PCC), to conveniently digitize photographic plates in a relatively short time without losing any plate information (Oh et al. 1995). Using this device we have performed surface photometry of 12 early type galaxies. We determined relative orientations and scales to analyze PCC images. We also determined an ellipticity, position angle of the major axis, and $a_4$ of each galaxy to quantify the distribution of surface brightness. We checked the performance and limitation of this device by comparing the PCC images with those digitized by the ST microdensitometer and those obtained with CCD observations.

  • Performances of LCDs are generally evaluated in terms of luminance and color versus viewing angle. In the present paper we show that this type of display can be favorably characterized in terms of polarization. We show that ELDIM EZContrast instrument can be used to measure the degree of polarization the light and the ellipticity and polarization direction of the polarized component. This measurement is made versus incidence angle between 0 and $88{\circ}$ and for all the azimuth angles. Important differences between the displays can be detected and related to their internal structures when luminance and color profiles are quite similar.

  • The dc magnetron sputter deposited (Pt/Co/Pt/Ni) multilayers which exhibited Curie temperatures in the range of 150-$300^{\circ}C$ were studied as possible alternative multilayers for magneto-optical recording to the widely studied Co/Pt, whose Curie temperatures are in the range of 200~$400^{\circ}C$. The Coercivities of these multilayers were between 450 Oe and 800 Oe. These multilayers exhibited comparable magnetic and magneto-optical properties to Co/Pt multilayers with enhancement of the Kerr rotation at lower wavelengths and negligible Kerr ellipticity over a wide range of the spectrum (4000~7000$\AA$ ).

  • The strain localization is a discontinuous phenomenon that addresses the formation of jumps of the field variables across a singularity surface. It has become widely accepted that the localization may occur as the result of discontinuous bifurcation which corresponds to the loss of ellipticity of the governing differential equations for elasto-plastic continua. In this paper, condition for strain localization in concrete based on bifurcation theory is studied and localization tensor analysis algorithm is employed to determine the directions of localization of deformations in concrete. By applying a plasticity model of concrete into the algorithm, localization analysis is performed concrete under uniaxial tension, pure shear and uniaxial compression.

  • Using the polarization dependence of laser output powers, we measured the characteristics of the birefringence, such as the magnitude of phase retardation, the ellipticity, and the off axis angle to the fiber optical axis, inside the ring type fiber laser cavity.

  • In this paper, we study the positive solutions to a discrete harmonic function for a random walk satisfying finite range and ellipticity conditions, killed at the boundary of an unbounded cylinder in ℤd. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions, and then establish that all the positive solutions are generated by two special solutions, which are exponential growth at one end and exponential decay at the other. Our method is based on maximum principle and a Harnack type inequality.

  • To study the effects of giant population on dynamical substructures of the central region of NGC 7006, we examine the radial variations of ellipticity and position angle on By stellar photometry using ellipse fitting technique. Total variations of ellipticity and position angle lie in the range $0.02\~0.06\;and\;-10^{\circ}+90^{\circ}$, respectively, from the center out to three times the half light radius. Our ellipse fitting results, after removing giant populations, show that the apparent central dynamical substructures of NGC 7006 are mainly affected by red giant, horizontal branch stars. On the contrary, the contribution of light from subgiant stars to the inner dynamical substructure seems to be insignificant.

  • A single-photon laser and mid-wave infrared (MWIR) common aperture optical system was designed and developed to detect and range a long-distance civil aviation aircraft. The secondary mirror of the Ritchey-Chretien (R-C) optical system was chosen as a dichroic lens to realize the design of a common aperture system for the laser and MWIR. Point spread function (PSF) ellipticity was introduced to evaluate the coupling efficiency of the laser receiving system. A small aperture stop and narrow filter were set in the secondary image plane and an afocal light path of the laser system, respectively, and the stray light suppression ability of the small aperture stop was verified by modeling and simulation. With high-precision manufacturing technology by single point diamond turning (SPDT) and a high-efficiency dichroic coating, the laser/MWIR common aperture optical system with a 𝜑300 mm aluminum alloy mirror obtained images of buildings at a distance of 5 km with great quality. A civil aviation aircraft detection experiment was conducted. The results show that the common aperture system could detect and track long-distance civil aviation aircraft effectively, and the coverage was more than 450 km (signal-to-noise ratio = 6.3). It satisfied the application requirements for earlier warning and ranging of long-range targets in the area of aviation, aerospace and ground detection systems.
