THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF TIN ION-FLAYED CO-CR(ELGILOY) ORTHODONTIC WIRES (TiN 피막처리된 Co-Cr계 교정용 선재의 물성)

  • To estimate the possibility of clinical application of TiN ion-Plated Elgiloy(Co-Cr wire), measurements of tensile strength and hardness were made on the four tempers on each of the manufactured Elgiloy, the (heat-treated) Elgiloy for 30 minutes at $250^{\circ}C$ and the TiN ion-plated Elgiloy. For comparison, the tensile strength and hardness of Stainless Steel wires were also measured. The following are the results of the study: $\cdot$In the 4 tempers, tensile strength was the greatest in the TiN ion-plated group, followed by the heat-treated Elgiloy group and the manufactured Elgiloy group, but no statistical difference was noticed between heat-treated and manufactured Elgiloy groups(p>0.05). $\cdot$In each temper, tensile strength of ion-plated Elgiloy increased about $10kgf/mm^2$ in comparison with the values of the manufactured Elgiloy $\cdot$In yellow, green and red tempers except the blue, hardness was the greatest in ion-plated group. In the blue temper, there was no statistical difference between heat-treated and manufactured Elgiloy groups(p>0.05). $\cdot$In each temper, hardness of ion-plated Elgiloy increased about 50-90VHN in comparison with the values of the manufactured Elgiloy. $\cdot$The tensile strength of Stainless Steel wire was similar to that of the red temper of manufactured Elgiloy and the green temper of ion-plated Elgiloy.

METAL RELEASE FROM BRACKETS AND ARCHWIRES (BRACKET과 호선의 금속유리)

  • The purpose of this experiment was to measure the amounts of nickel and chromium released from a simulated orthodontic appliance in artificial saliva. Simulated mandibular half-arch orthodontic appliances were composed of American Iron and Steel Institute type 304 brackets, Permachrome, Elgiloy, Australian wire, T.M.A. and Nitinol. The amounts of nickel and chromium released from sample were measured with atomic absorption spectrophotometer after 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 days. The cumulative amounts of nickel released from Permachrome, Elgiloy, Australian wire and T.M.A. reached a plateau after 6 days. But the cumulative amounts of nickel released from Nitinol increased continuously. Significant amounts of both nickel and chromium were solubilized from the simulated orthodontic appliances into artificial saliva. After 15 days, total cumulative amounts of nickel were $152.15{\mu}g$, $150.27{\mu}g$, $134.74{\mu}g$, $114.67{\mu}g$ and $93.39{\mu}$ from the Elgiloy, Australian wire, Nitinol, Permachrome and T.M.A., respectively. Total cumulative amounts of chromium from Permachrome, Australian wire, Elgiloy, Nitinol and T.M.A. were $100.83{\mu}g$, $83.64{\mu}g$, $81.61{\mu}g$, $14.90{\mu}g$ and $12.43{\mu}g$, respectively. The result showed that nickel released from Elgiloy and chromium released from Permachrome were more than any others.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON CHANGES OF ORTHODONTIC WIRES AFTER ELECTROPOLISHING (전해연마후 교정선의 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Guiding a tooth along an arch wire results in a counteracting frictional force among arch wires, bracket and ligature. This frictional forces should be eliminated or minimized when orthodontic teeth movement is being planned. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of width, cross-sectional forms and surface morphologies of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire after electropolising. Experimental variables included in this experiment were arch wire materials, current, electrolyte temperature and polishing time. Wire widths were measured by micrometer and cross-sectional forms and surface morphologies were examined with optical microscope and scanning electron microcope. The results were as follows: 1. The mean and standard deviation of widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire varying polishing time with condition of $249A/dm^2$ and $20^{\circ}C,\;249A/dm^2$ and, $332A/dm^2$ and $20^{\circ}C$ and $332A/dm^2$ and $250^{\circ}C$ were obtained. 2. With increasing polishing time, the widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire became decreased proportionally 3. The changes of widths of stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire were statistically insignificant between $20^{\circ}C$ group and $25^{\circ}C$ group, but significant between $249A/dm^2$ group and $332A/dm^2$ group. 4 The cross-sectional forms of wire after electropolishing were not changed in stainless steel wire, and while it were changed to rounded corners in $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire. 5. The surface morphologies of wire after electropolishing were scratch-absent and more smoothened both in stainless steel wire and $Elgiloy^{\circledR}$ wire.

THE EFFECTS OF HEAT TREATMENT ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ELGILOY WIRE (열처리가 Elgiloy 선재의 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • Heat treatment which removes internal stress enhances the mechanical properties of the orthodontic arch wire. The main purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of the heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the Elgiloy wire. The Elfiloy wire, 0.016' X 0.022' and 0.018' X 0.025', were heat treated in an electric oven for 5, 10 and 15 minutes at selected temperatures between 300 and $900^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength and load deflection rate were measured to reveal the changes of mechanical property at various conditions, and each specimen was observed under metallurgic microscope. Also to trace the precipitation material due to overheat treatment, a qualitative analysis was carried out with EDS system. It was found that heat treatment at a low temperature caused an increase in the tensile strength and bending resistance, and a maintenance in the fibrous in the tensile strength and bending resistance, and a maintenance in the fibrous structure of both sizes of wire. The changes observed in properties and appearance were probably due to the relief of internal stresses incurred in the metal during cold working. In both sizes of wire the tensile strength and the bending resistance continued to decrease at high temperature, and the fibrous structure continued to disappear then was not observed at $900^{\circ}C$. The carbide precipitation founded in grain boundary at $750^{\circ}C$ probably was other elements carbide (Ni, Co) except Cr. The grain growth was observed at $1100^{\circ}C$. Optimum heat treatment for the 0.016' X 0.022' Elgiloy wire was 10 minutes at $500^{\circ}C$, and for the 0.018' X 0.025' Elgiloy wire it was 5 to 15 minutes at $500^{\circ}C$.

  • 저자는 현재 Light-Wire Technique에서 많이 사용되는 0.016" 및 0.018"의 원형 녹색 "Elgiloy" 교정용 탄선의 Residual Stress가 열처리에 의하여 제거되는 양을 Testing Jig를 사용하여 측정하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 0.016" 및 0.018"의 원형 녹색 "Elgiloy" 교정용 탄선은 열처리 시 온도의 증가에 따라 제거되는 Residual stress의 양도 증가한다. 2. 동일 온도조건에서 시간조건의 변화에 따른 Residual Stress의 제거치는 차이는 있었으나 현저하다고 인정할 수 없다. 3. 통상적 열처리 방법에 의하면 제거된 Residual Stress의 양은 0.016"인 경우 $26.95\%\~38.54\%$, 0.018"인 경우 $27.06\%\~41.05\%$이다. 4. $950^{\circ}F$에서 열처리했을 시 제거된 Residual Stress의 양은 0.016"인 경우 $38.54\%\~43.16\%$, 0.018"인 경우 $41.05\%\~44.56\%$이다.

A STUDY ON THE CHANGES OF THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES TN LOOPED WIRES BY VARIABLE FACTORS (변환요소에 따른 LOOPED WIRE의 탄성 변화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study nab to evlauate and compare the effect of the variable factors of wire on the elastic properties of looped rectangular wire. Five variable factors were presented-material(Hi-T, blue Elgiloy), wire size(.016'$\;\times\;$.022', .018'$\;\times\;$.025'), loop length(15mm, 20mm), loop configuration(open loop, closed loop), gabling (non-gable, gable). So, the total 256 specimens were divided into 32 groups, and each of those nab pulled on Instron testing machine. The load-deflection curve of each wire obtained, from which force, range in elastic limit, and stiffness were computed and analyzed statistically. The results were obtained as follows : 1. All of the variable factors - wire material, size, loop length loop configuration, and gabling - took a significant effect on load-deflection rate of looped wire. 2. The force at elastic limit was the smallest in the group of Hi-T, .016'$\;\times\;$.022', 20mm loop length, open loop, non-gable, and the largest in the group of blue Elgiloy, .018'$\;\times\;$.025', 15mm loop length, closed loop, non-gable. 3. The range at elastic limit was the smallest in the group of Hi-T, .018'$\;\times\;$.025', 15mm loop length, open loop, non-gable, and the largest in the group of HI-T, .016'$\;\times\;$.022', 20mm loop length, closed loop, gable. 4. Loop configuration and loop length were the most effective factors on the elastic properties of looped wires, and gabling was the least effective.

A STUDY ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ORTHODONTIC OPEN COIL SPRINGS (교정용 open coil spring의 역학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • It was the purpose of this study to analyze and compare the mechanical properties of ortho dontic open coil springs. Four variable factors were presented - wire diameter (.008", .009", .010"), lumen size (.030", .032", .036"), arch wire size and shape (.016" round, $ .016^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}.022^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ rect.) and alloy type (HiT II, Elgiloy, Sentalloy). The total 104 specimens were divided into 13 groups, and compression test was performed on an Instron test machine. The load deflection curve of each open coil spring was obtained, from which, the load-deflection relations, stiffnesses, percent recoveries were computed statistically. The results were obtained as follows: 1. When the lumen size of the coil spring remained constant, stiffness and percent recovery increased as the wire diameter increased. 2. When the wire diameter of the coil spring remained constant, stiffness and percent recovery decreased as the lumen size increased. 3. The effect of size and shape of arch wire on the coil spring was not statistically significant. 4. In alloy types, stiffness was the greatest in HiT II (55.21), Elgiloy (42.61) and Sentalloy (7.74) in that order. Sentalloy exhibited superior percent recovery and long range of action.

  • We have effectually treated 22 years girl who had complained of an aterior open-bite. Treatment was based on non-extracted and multibanded technigue at the use of horizontal loop with 0.016 inch green Elgiloy wire. Anteior cross elastics, C1Ⅲ intermaxillary elastics, occasicnally C1.Ⅱ elastics were used. when vertical discrepancy was corrected, we changed the arch wire making use of 0.018 ×0.022 inch rectangular wire with 1st. and 2nd. order bend. After 12mons. the ideal arch wire with tie back loop was placed for stabilizing arch. Nearly after 20 months bands were removed and placed retainer.

A STUDY ON THE TORQUE EFFECT OF ORTHODONTIC WIRES (교정용 선재의 TORQUE 효과에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the torque effect of othodontic wires. Ten types of orthodontic wires (five types of materials, two types of cross-sectional dimensions) were selected. Each group of ire type was constituted with five specimens. These specimens were tested on the universal testing machine(Instron) with specially-designed jig. The torque-twist curve of each wire was obtained and the results were analyzed statistically. The results were as follows. 1. 0.017'$\times$ 0.025' wire showed more torque effect than 0.016'$\times$ 0.022' wire at the same twist. 2.Torque effect was the greatest in stainless steel and the least in Nitinol. 3.The maximum amount of torque was the greatest in heat-treated Blue Elgiloy and the least in Nitinol.

  • The authors measured orthodontic force using the orthodontic materials of the Rocky Mountain Products Company. The results were as follows : ① Use latex of wide diameter in long distance, and when the latex of wide diameter activated by four or five times, we obtained a optimal force. ② The authors obtained canine retractions with sectional arch. Activation of sectional arch began at 1mm and had to do not activations of 3mm more. ③ The leveling started from .014 green round wire and finished to. 0.16" green Elgiloy round wire. Permit only a mild force in ideal arch form, in rectangular wire. ④ Fundamentaly, elastic thread obtained maximum force by activating as two times. ⑤ Coil spring obtained more heavy force from short distance than long distance.
