The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school students' conceptions about the knowledge source and the mechanism about the greenhouse effect, and the relationship between the greenhouse effect and the global warming. Participants were 157 sixth graders (boy : n=79, girl : n=78) from six elementary schools located in the same city. The open-ended questionnaire was used to examine the students' spontaneous ideas depicted by their drawings and/or writings. The results of this study are as follows: First, although there is no the content on the greenhouse effect in the elementary school curriculum document, the children in this study indicated that the main source of their knowledge about the greenhouse effect came from 'school class' (31.8%); Second, although the children did not take a class about the greenhouse effect itself, 14.0% of children had a relatively high level of the mental model on the phenomenon; Third, more than 90% of the children did not have the correct understanding about the relation between the greenhouse effect and the global warming.
This study was conducted to examine the relationship between dietary habits and time spent watching TV and using internet, in elementary school children. The data were collected by a questionnaire survey of 712 elementary school children, within Gwangju and Jeonnam area. The SPSS 12.0/win program was used to analyze the 523 samples. Amount of TV-watching time was found to be related to the dietary habit score in the subjects. The children who watch TV "less than 1 hour/day" on weekdays had a better dietary habit score than those who watch TV "more than 1 hour" (p<0.0001). The children who watch TV "less than 2 hours/day" on weekends had a better dietary habit than the children who watch TV "more than 2 hours/day" (p<0.0001). The internet usage was also related to the dietary habit score in these children: those who use internet "less than 1 hour/day" on weekdays had a better dietary habit score than the children who use internet "more than 2 hours/day" (p<0.0001). The children who use internet "less than 2 hours/day" on weekends had a better dietary habit score than the children who use internet "more than 2 hours/day" (p<0.0001). These results indicate that the children tend to have a better diet when their TV and internet time is limited and thus healthy dietary behavior is negatively associated with a sedentary pattern of activity in elementary school children.
The current study examined the relations between sixth-grade elementary school children's perceptions of daily hassles, optimistic thinking, and subjective well-being. This study also investigated the moderating effect of optimistic thinking on the relationship between daily hassles and subjective well-being. A total of 474 sixth-grade elementary school children participated in this study. First, children's daily hassles were negatively related to optimistic thinking and subjective well-being. As children perceived higher levels of daily hassles, they showed lower levels of optimistic thinking and subjective well-being. Children's optimistic thinking was positively related to subjective well-being. Second, children's optimistic thinking moderated the relations between daily hassles and subjective well-being. Specifically, for children with higher levels of optimistic thinking, their subjective well-being decreased with increasing levels of daily hassles related to parents and teachers. However, for children with lower levels of optimistic thinking, there was no relation between daily hassles and subjective well-being. These findings suggest that optimistic thinking could be an important means by which we could improve children's subjective well-being, especially when they experience higher levels of daily hassles.
This study researches an obesity index and the realities of physical activity of elementary school children and provide basic data to instruct correct physical activity for low weight and obese children. The subject was 813 Elementary School Children of grade 4-6 in Kyungju and data were collected with a Physical Activity Questionnaire from YHS, USA. The collected data were analyzed with real number, percentage, average and standard deviation techniques. The range was by SPSS WIN. Both of them were in the normal range, between -38.3 and 77.7, between low weight and obesity. The results are as follows : 1. An Obesity index according to grade and sex: the average obesity index of 423 boys was $7.56{\pm}15.7$, for girls it was $2.56{\pm}14.3$. Both of them were in the normal range, between -38.3 and 77.7. There were low weight($-38.85{\pm}0.9$) students as well as obese, including extremely low weight children ($-38.85{\pm}0.9$) and extremely obese children. 2. On the whole, in the Frequency of the 25 item physical activities breakdown, children reported to watch TV 1. ($2.7{\pm}0.6$), or do homework($2.1{\pm}0.9$), more than three-fourths of the week, male children, however, played more football($2.0{\pm}0.9$). As male obese children do less MET5, MET8(highly active activity) than male normal children, it was also discovered that low weight children do more severe activity in MET8(high activity). In female cases, it was revealed that neither do highly intense activity. 3. In physical activity, male children received higher points than female children with $92.94{\pm}37.95$ to $74.46{\pm}29.50$. On the whole, male and female obese children had lower score than normal children. 4. As for attitude toward physical activity, male children($31.96{\pm}4.37$) had a positive attitude than female children ($29.57{\pm}3.89$), but obese male children had a negative attitude regarding activity viewed as normal. Therefore, in preventing obesity in elementary school children the treating of under-weight children should be included in the obesity program so as to prevent mal-nutrition or deficiency. It is needed to instruct obese children to carry out intensive work-outs at least 3 times a week through systematic programs. It is also needed that parents and teachers educate elementary school children from an early age with information on the frequency and intensity of work-outs to prevent obesity. It is also desirable that children be educated to carry out physical activities that address their specific needs. As a result of this study, obesity management must be started from elementary school and children should be instructed to act in high-intensity actirities when they spend leisure time.
The necessity of school health promoting projects is well known to many researchers, however, there is a lack of research on the development of strategies for school health programs and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the programs. The results of our previous study in 1996 identified poor eyesight as one of the several health problems among elementary school children in urban areas. The main objective of this study is to develop, implement, and evaluate vision care for elementary school children. The research method utilized a quasi experimental design using non-equivalent group, pre-post comparison. The sample consisted of all second grade children in two elementary schools in Kyung-giProvince. In order to prevent a contamination effect of the vision care program, one school was selected as a control and the other school was selected as a treatment group. The experimental school had 467 children and the control school had 402 children. The visual acuity of children in both group was measured and a survey questionnaire was sent out to parents on the knowledge, attitude, and behavior related to vision care before the program was implemented. The children of the experimental school received the following programs; separate education on proper nutrition and care of eyesight for children and parents, daily eye exercises using video tape, and an essay and poster contest on healthy eyesight. The eye exercise program lasted from March, 1997 to November, 1997. On November, 1997, visual acuity was measured again from children in both schools. The data was analyzed by using SAS statistical package. The results indicate that the children in the experimental group had significantly (p〈0.001) better eyesight than the children in the control group. Also, some of the behavior highly related to the poor eyesight are poor maternal eyesight and watching TV from a short distance. In conclusion, one of the significance of this project is that the vision care program was developed after the need assessment. It will be encouraged in the future that more school health program should be developed after a need assessment. Also, inclusion of family members was important in health promoting projects within a school setting since healthy behavior needs to be reinforced at horne as well as at school.
In March 2021, the <Guidance on Promoting the Scientific Interface between Kindergarten and Elementary School> issued by the Ministry of Education of China clearly pointed out that it is necessary to adhere to child oriented. This goal of this policy is based on the idea of "living education" proposed by Mr. Heqin Chen in 1940, which indicates that a true understanding of children is necessary before talking about educating them. The core goal of "bidirectional articulation" is to strengthen the sense of articulation between kindergartens and elementary school, scientifically prepare for and adapt to school enrollment, and promote the smooth transition of children. The purpose of this study were to identify the income allocation structure of private education and child care and to analyze contributing factors income allocation structure of private education and child care for two children among Korean married couples. For these purposes total sample of 760 married couples those having two children of both pre-school aged and elementary school aged wee selected and total sample was divided into two groups by first child's school aged; those were pre-school aged(375) and elementary school aged (385) Statistics were frequencies means percentile and Tobit and OLS analysis. The results were as follows. First 268 households among the households those having the first child of pre-school aged spent 11% of income for private education while 29 households spent 7% of income for child care. 348 households among the households having the first child of elementary school aged spent 11% of income for private education. Second pre=-school aged' contri uting factors to income allocation struture of private education and child care were household family type family size home ownership and financial asset amount and elementary school-aged factors were satisfaction of family relationship and financial asset.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-efficacy, social support, and depression in elementary school children. Methods: The participants of this study were 619 students from seven elementary schools located in Jollabuk-do Province, Korea. The methods included data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/WIN version 15.0. Results: The mean scores of self-efficacy, social support, and depression were $2.9{\pm}0.58$, $3.2{\pm}0.44$ and $14.0{\pm}7.32$, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and social support (r=.517, p<.001). Significant negative correlations were observed between self-efficacy and depression (r=-.557, p<.001) and between social support and depression (r=-.571, p<.001). The variables of depression in elementary school children were self-efficacy and social support, which explained 42.7% of the cases. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that current intervention programs are not sufficient to curb depression in elementary school children and therefore it is needed to develop nursing intervention programs to promote self-efficacy and social support.
Purpose: This study aimed at not only suggest some ideas useful in planning and doing the safety education in the elementary schools in the near future putting into test the safety education proposal which has been developed by researchers in accordance with the national 7st education courses but also improve health of the children through taking right safety knowledge and sound safety attitude. Method: For this study 140 student are selected from 3-5th grade of the elementary school in Kyoungki-Do and Kwangwon-Do and have been taught the safety education during 10weeks, 10times. Result: 1) After the safety education, knowledge about the injury prevention of the children show to be significantly different from that they had before(t=-9.156, p=.000). 2) In order to look into any effect of the attitude about injury prevention after the safety education there were significant difference(t=-3.755, p=.000). Conclusion: As the findings of the study indicating that safety education expand the correct knowledge about injury prevention and have more affirmative and sound attitude about injury prevention. So it may be concluded that, safety education have the positive effect both knowledge and attitude about injury prevention among elementary school children.
The elementary school classroom is a space where children spend a long time during the day, during the six years of childhood, in which children are emotionally sensitive and emotionally important. Therefore, it is necessary to create a classroom that can develop emotions considering the developmental characteristics of children. However, the elementary school classroom in Korea has less change in the classroom envir- onment than in the rapidly changing curriculum, and classrooms and furniture considering emotional development are hard to find. Therefore, this study suggests the necessity of improvement for classroom furniture of elementary school, presents problem and consideration condition of present classroom furniture by analyzing the present condition of elementary school classroom in Korea and child development characteristic of school age, and proposes the improvement direction through analyzing domestic and foreign classroom furniture products. To do this, we checked the physical and developmental characteristics of children ages 8 to 13, confirmed the use of the classroom furniture in 10 schools located in Seoul, Gye- onggi and Incheon, analyzed the problems of these furniture, compared and analyzed the shape, material, and color of the products of 32 domestic companies teaching tools manufacturers focusing on desks, chairs, lockers, and teaching aid box that are commonly used in classrooms. Through this, this study provided basic data for the selection of ideal classroom furniture in the future.
