In this paper, the simulation methods using transmission lines are studied and realized, which are necessary in design and analysis of hydraulic control systems. The basic idea of this method is that system components are separated by transmission line element for simulation. The PI-controller can keep inductance level as low as desired. It can also handle nonlinearities and discontinuities without flag signal when restarting integration. Parallel hydraulic circuits are simulated using parallel processing algorithm. To shoe that using variable timestep size in each subsystem, simulation time can be reduced. Performance of the simulation results is compared with that of Runge Kutta method.

Adsorption of toluene by activated carbon fiber (ACF) coated with dielectric heating element and desorption by applying microwave were investigated. In order to prepare adsorbent so that VOC can be desorbed by microwave heating, fine dielectric heating element with nano size was coated on the surface of the ACF using hybrid binder. Eight adsorbents (ACF-DHE, Activated Carbon Fiber coated with Dielectric Heating Element) were prepared with different amount of dielectric heating element, kinds of hybrid binder, and solvent. In order to investigate adsorption characteristics, BET surface area, pore volume, and average pore size were measured for each adsorbent including ACF. Breakthrough experiments with toluene concentration, flow rate, bed length using fixed bed reactor were performed to investigate adsorbality of adsorbent, and results were compared with that of the ACF. Desorption reactor was constructed with modified microwave oven to investigate heating effect on ACF-DHE by applying microwave power. Each adsorbent saturated with toluene were put into desorption reactor. Composition of desorbed gas generated by applying controlled microwave power to reactor was measured. Up to now, hot air desorption method has been used. Experimental results showed that desorption method with new adsorbent prepared by coating dielectric heating element on ACF can be used for industrial application.
This paper aims to conduct the reliability-based assessment of the welded joint in the orthotropic steel bridge deck by use of a mesh-insensitive structural stress (MISS) method, which is an effective numerical procedure to determine the reliable stress distribution adjacent to the weld toe. Both the solid element model and the shell element model are first established to investigate the sensitivity of the element size and the element type in calculating the structural stress under different loading scenarios. In order to achieve realistic condition assessment of the welded joint, the probabilistic approach based on the structural reliability theory is adopted to derive the reliability index and the failure probability by taking into account the uncertainties inherent in the material properties and load conditions. The limit state function is formulated in terms of the structural resistance of the material and the load effect which is described by the structural stress obtained by the MISS method. The reliability index is computed by use of the first-order reliability method (FORM), and compared with a target reliability index to facilitate the safety assessment. The results achieved from this study reveal that the calculation of the structural stress using the MISS method is insensitive to the element size and the element type, and the obtained structural stress results serve as a reliable basis for structural reliability analysis.

The suspended particulate matters had been collected by a cascade impactor having 9 size fragnated stages for 2 years (Dec. 1989 to Nov. 1991) in Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus. The particulate matters were then collected on each stage by membrane filters. The weight concentration on each stage was estimated by a microbalance and further chemical element concentrations were determined by an XRF system. The study focused on developing of a receptor model using the TTFA (target transformation factor analysis) to apportion aerosol mass with the 30 ambient data sets. Each data set consists of the 8 size-ranged subdata sets characterized by 13 element variables. Even though a couple of sources could not be identified, three to five sources were extracted from each aerosol size-range, and then 9 statistical source profiles were generated. Finally, source contribution of particulate matters on each size-range could be estimated in Suwon area.

This paper proposes a new diversity antenna which is the base of MIMO, tunable and reconfigurable antennas. The antenna has a small size and high inter-antenna isolation resulting from the compact radiating element comprising a meandered line and an open-loop combined in one limited uniplanar space and a modified T-shaped decoupling structure, respectively. In a WiMAX band, the radiating element and the entire antenna are $0.092{\lambda}$ and $0.2216{\lambda}$ in size, which shows effective size-reduction and the gain and efficiency of the proposed antenna attached to the ground of a handheld device are 3.7dBi and 56% acceptable to the industrial standard.
A shape error of the sheet metal product made by a flexible stretch forming process is occurred by a various forming parameters. A die used in the flexible stretch forming is composed of a punch array to obtain the various objective surfaces using only one die. But gaps between the punches induce the shape error and the defect such as a scratch. Forming parameters of the punch size and the elastic pad to prevent the surface defect must be considered in the flexible die design process. In this study, tendency analysis of shape error according to the forming parameters in the flexible stretch process is conducted using a finite element method. Three forming parameters, which are the punch size, the objective curvature radius and the elastic pad thickness, are considered. Finite element modeling using the punch height calculation algorithm and the evaluation method of the shape error, which is a representative value for the formability of formed surface, are proposed. Consequently, the shape error is in proportion to the punch size and is out of proportion to the objective curvature radius and the elastic pad thickness.

Analytical solution of micro-scale milling process is presented in order to suggest available machining conditions. The size effect should be considered to determine cutting characteristics in micro-scale cutting. The feed per tooth is the most dominant cutting parameter related to the size effect in micro-scale milling process. In order to determine the feed per tooth at which chips can be formed, the finite element method is used. The finite element method is employed by utilizing the Johnson-Cook (JC) model as a constitutive model of work material flow stress. Machining experiments are performed to validate the simulation results by using a micro-machining stage. The validation is conducted by observing cutting force signals from a cutting tool and the conditions of the machined surface of the workpiece.
This paper investigates the concrete permeability through a numerical and statistical approach. Concrete is considered as a random heterogeneous composite of three phases: aggregates, interfacial transition zones (ITZ) and matrix. The paper begins with some classical bound and estimate theories applied to concrete permeability and the influence of ITZ on these bound and estimate values is discussed. Numerical samples for permeability analysis are established through random aggregate structure (RAS) scheme, each numerical sample containing randomly distributed aggregates coated with ITZ and dispersed in a homogeneous matrix. The volumetric fraction of aggregates is fixed and the size distribution of aggregates observes Fuller's curve. Then finite element method is used to solve the steady permeation problem on 2D numerical samples and the overall permeability is deduced from flux-pressure relation. The impact of ITZ on overall permeability is analyzed in terms of ITZ width and contrast ratio between ITZ and matrix permeabilities. Hereafter, 3680 samples are generated for 23 sample sizes and 4 contrast ratios, and statistical analysis is performed on the permeability dispersion in terms of sample size and ITZ characteristics. By sample theory, the size of representative volume element (RVE) for permeability is then quantified considering sample realization number and expected error. Concluding remarks are provided for the impact of ITZ on concrete permeability and its statistical characteristics.
In the paper, we have proposed a new method to determine the initial billet for the forged products using a function approximation in the neural network. The architecture of neural network is a three-layer neural network and the back propagation algorithm is employed to train the network. By utilizing the ability of function approximation of a neural network, an optimal billet is determined by applying the nonlinear mathematical relationship between the aspect ratios in the initial billet and the final products. The amount of incomplete filling in the die is measured by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The neural network is trained with the initial billet aspect ratios and those of the unfilled volumes. After learning, the system is able to predict the filling regions which are exactly the same or slightly different to the results of finite element simulation. This new method is applied to find the optimal billet size for the plane strain rib-web product in cold forging. This would reduce the number of finite element simulation for determining the optimal billet size of forging product, further it is usefully adapted to physical modeling for the forging design.
The finite element analysis is one of the representative methods for predicting the materials behavior for experiments that are difficult to perform empirically. Constitutive equations are essential for reducing computation time and sharing data because they enable finite element analysis simulations through simple formulae. However, it is difficult to derive accurate flow curves for all materials as most constitutive equations are not formulated based on their physical meaning. Also, even if the constitutive equation is a good representation of the flow curve to the experimental results, some fundamental issues remain unresolved, such as the effect of mesh size on the calculation results. In this study, a new constitutive equation was proposed to predict various materials by modifying the combined Swift-Voce model, and the calculation results with various mesh sizes were compared to better simulate the experimental results.
