Preparation and properties of Bi-based lead-free ceramic multilayer actuators

  • Lead-free (Bi0.5Na0.41K0.09)TiO3 (BNKT) multilayer ceramic actuators were prepared using tape-casting and screen-printing techniques. Co-firing behavior of BNKT/AgPd laminates was examined as a function of sintering temperature. It was found that co-firing induced bending and electrical properties were very sensitive to sintering condition. By optimizing sintering conditions, lead-free electrostrictive multilayer actuators with normalized strain Smax/Emax of 266 pm/V have been successfully fabricated, which is promising for lead-free actuator applications.

B-site Substitution Effects on the Piezoelectric Properties of Bi-based Lead-free Ceramics

  • B-site substitution with isovalent and donor impurities was compared in terms of the piezoelectric properties of Bi-based ABO3 perovskite ceramics. X-ray diffraction study revealed that both impurities bring about degradation in their ferroelectric properties as well as piezoelectric characteristics. However, there existed a difference between the isovalent and heterovalent impurities that influence a phase transformation of ferroelectric anisotropic-to-electrostrictive pseudocubic symmetry. Based upon analyses including the crystal, microstructure, dielectric, ferroelectric properties, we believed that A-site vacancies in the ABO3 ceramic significantly contribute to a ferroelectric-nonpolar phase transition, which give rise to lead to a giant strains. The present paper will discuss the origin of giant strains in Bi-based perovskite ceramics.

The fabrication and strain properties of piezoeletric ceramic actuator using PMN - PT -PZ system (PMN - PT - PZ 계 세라믹스를 이용한 압전 엑츄에이터의 제작 및 변위 특성)

  • Piezoelectric Actuator and electrostrictive Actuator samples were fabricated using PMN-PT-PZ system ceramics with Barium substitution, and the strain properties of them investigated. The largest Piezoelectric coefficient and electromechanical coupling coefficient were observed at sintering temperature $1250^{\circ}C$, Barium 0.05 mol %. The strain of poled samples is observed twice highly then unpoled ones, and the former showed larger hysteresis in strain then the latter, too. Poled multilayered actuator samples showed considerable strain.

  • In order to understand the electrostrictive behavior of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3(PMN-PT) solid solutions the dielectric constants and the electric-field-induced strains in (1-x)PMN-xPT (x=0.0-0.4) were investigated in the temperature range -5$0^{\circ}C$-20$0^{\circ}C$. Powder of (1-x)Pb(Mg2/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4) were prepared from the oxide forms of Pb, Mg, Nb and Ti via a columbite precursor method As the amount of PbTiO3 increases the temperature of maximum dielectric constant(T$\varepsilon$max) increases and the phase transition become less diffusive. The strain maximum occurs only when the diffuse phase transition occurs from rhombohedral to cubic or rhombohedral to tetragonal as in x=0.1-0.35 The strains monotonically decrease with temperature in the materials in which phase transition occurs from tetragonal to cubic as in x=0.4.

  • In case of environment requiring safety such as human body and requiring flexible shape, a conventional mechanical actuator system does not satisfy requirement. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, a research of various smart material such as EAP (Electro Active Polymer), EAC (Electro Active Ceramic) and SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) is in progress. Recently, the highest preferring material among various smart material is EP (Electrostictive Polymer), because it has very fast response time, poerful force and large displacement. The previous researches have been studied properties of polymer and simple control, but present researches are studied a polymer actuator. An EP (Electostrictive Polymer) actuator has properties which change variably as shape and environmental condition. Therefore, in order to coincide with a user's purpose, it is important not only to decide a shape of actuator and mechanical design but also to investigate a efficient controller. In this paper, we constructed the control logic with an adaptive fuvy algorithm which depends on the physical properties of EP that has a dielectric constant depending on time.
