  • Organic-inorganic composite of polyaniline and barium titanate (PANI-$BaTiO_3$) was synthesized via an in-situ oxidation polymerization of aniline in the presence of barium titanate ($BaTiO_3$) nanoparticles dispersed in an acidic medium. Barium titanate has large electric resistance and relatively high dielectric constant which is one of the essential properties for its electrorheological (ER) applications. The microstructure and composition of the obtained PANI/$BaTiO_3$ composite were characterized by SEM, FT-IR and XRD. In addition, we also employed a rotational rheometer to investigate the rheological performance of the ER fluids based on both pure PANI particle and PANI/$BaTiO_3$ composite. It was found that the composite materials possess much higher yield stresses than the pristine PANI due to unique dielectric properties of the inorganic $BaTiO_3$ particles. Finally, we also examined dynamic yield stress by analyzing its extrapolated yield stress data as a function of electric field strengths. Using the critical electric field strengths deduced, we further found that the universal yield stress equation collapses their data onto a single curve.

  • In order to understand the flow behavior of Electrorheological (ER) fluid, dynamic simulation has been intensively performed for the last decade. When the shear flow is applied, it is easy to carry out the simulation with relatively small number of particles because of the periodic boundary condition. For the squeezing flow, however, it is not easy to apply the periodic boundary condition, and the number of particles needs to be increased to simulate the ER system more realistically. For this reason, the simulation of ER fluid under squeezing flow has been mostly performed with some representative chains or with the approximation that severely restricts the flow geometry to reduce the computational load. In this study, Message Passing Interface (MPI), which is one of the most widely-used parallel processing techniques, has been employed in a dynamic simulation of ER fluid under squeezing flow. As the number of particles used in the simulation could be increased significantly, full domain between the electrodes has been covered. The numerical treatment or the approximation used to reduce the computational load has been evaluated for its validity, and was found to be quite effective. As the number of particles is increased, the fluctuation of the normal stress becomes diminished and the prediction in general was found to be qualitatively In good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The electrorheological(ER) fluid is a new material and is used for the mechanical motion devices such as semi-active suspensions, high speed clutches, and vibration isolators. The ER fluid applications need high voltage power supplies having special requirements to control the viscosity of the ER fluid. This paper deals with the development of the high voltage power supply for the semi-active suspension system using the ER fluid. The characteristics of the ER fluid are analyzed, and the design and implementation of the high voltage power supply are presented. It is well demonstrated through the experiment that the developed high voltage power supply shows a good performance suitable for the ER fluid application.

  • The electrorheoloRical (ER) fluids are composed of a colloidal dispersion of polarizable particles in insulating oil, and it's the rheological property changes by the applied electric field. These changed are reversible and occur fast within a fewmilliseconds. The ER properties of the ER fluid such as increment of viscosity and yield stress come from the particle chain structure induced by electric fleld. When formulating the ER fluid for a speciflc application, some requirement must besatisfled, which are high yield stress under electric field, rapid response, and dispersion stability. While this characteristic makes valuable ER fluids in valious industrial applications, their lung term and quiescent application has been limited because ofproblems with particle sedimentation. In an effort to overcome sedimentation problem of ER fluids, the anhydrous ER materials of monodispersed hollow polyaniline (PANI) and adipate derivative respectively with submicron-sized suspension providing wide operating temperature range and other advantage were synthesized in a four-step procedure. The ER fluidswere characterized by FT-lR, TGA, DLS, SEM, and TEM. Stability of the suspensions was examined by an UV spectroscopy. The rheological and electrical properties of the suspension were investigated Couette-type rheometer with a high voltagegenerator, current density, and conductivity. And the behavior of ER suspensions was observed by a video camera attached toan optical microscope under 3kV/mm. The suspensions showed good ER properties, durability, and particle dispersion.

  • Two decisive mechanisms of the electrorhological polishing for a small part(for example, a aspherical surface in a micro lens) are explained. Firstly, non-uniform electric field generated in the polishing structure increases a shear stress of ER fluids which is maximized dramatically near the tool, therefore, substrate adjacent to the tool can be removed effectively by mixed abrasives in the ER fluid. Secondly, abrasives in a non-uniform electric field are governed by the dielectrophoretic phenomena. Abrasives move toward the tool because the field gradient is highest near the tool and then abrasives are actively holded in that area. This phenomena is observed and evaluated by the optical measurement.

  • The electrical and rheological properties pertaining to the electrorheological (ER) behavior of chitosan derivatives, chitosan, chitosan ammonium salt and chitosan phosphate suspensions in silicone oil were investigated. Chitosan derivative suspensions showed a typical ER response (Bingham flow behavior) upon application of an electric field. However, chitosan phosphate suspension exhibited an excellent shear yield stress compared with chitosan and chitosan ammonium salt suspensions. The difference in behavior results from the difference in the conductivity of the disperse phases due to the difference of their polarizability. The shear stress for the chitosan, chitosan ammonium salt and chitosan phosphate suspensions exhibited a linear dependence on the volume fraction of particles and 1.18 ,1.41 and 1.67 powers of the electric field. On the basis of the experimental results, the newly synthesized chitosan derivative suspensions found to be an ER fluid.

  • The ER fluid can be one of efficient materials in ultraprecision polishing for optics, ceramics and semiconductors because of electrically controllable apparent viscosity. To finish small 3 dimensional structures such as the aspherical surface in optical elements, the possible arrangement of a tool, workpiece and auxiliary electrode is described. We examined the influence of the addition of a few abrasive particles on the performance of the ER fluid by measuring yield stress, and observed the behavior of abrasive particles in the ER fluid by a CCD camera, which is also theoretically predicted from the electromechanical principles of particles. On the basis of the above results, the steady flow analysis around the rotating micro tool is worked out considering the non-uniform electric field. Finally, Pyrex glass is polished using the mixture of the ER fluid and abrasive particles, and the effect of the electric field strength is evaluated.

  • Electrorheological(HER) and magnetorheologica(MR) fluids have a unique ability to increase the dynamic yield stress of the fluid substantially when electric or magnetic field is applied. ER and MR fluid-based dampers are typically analyzed using Bingham-plastic shear flow analysis under Quasi-steady fully developed flow conditions. An alternative perspective, supported by measurements reported in the literature, is to allow for post-yield shear thinning and shear thickening. To model these, the constant post-yield plastic viscosity in Bingham model can be replaced with a power-law model dependent on shear strain rate that is known as the Herschel-Bulkley fluid model. The objective of this paper is to predict the damping forces analytically in a typical ER bypass damper for variable electric field, or yield stress using Herschel-Bulkley analysis.

  • The Electro-Rheological (ER) fluid has been used to the ultraprecision polishing of single crystal silicon as new polishing slurry whose properties such as yield stress and particle structure changed with the application of an electric field. In this work, it is aimed to find the effective parameters in the ER fluid on material removal in the polishing system whose structure is similar to that of the simple hydrodynamic bearing. The generated pressure in the gap between a moving wall and a workpiece, as well as the electric field-induced stress of the mixture of ER fluid-abrasives, is evaluated experimentally, and their influence on the polishing of single crystal silicon is analyzed. Moreover, the behavior of abrasive and ER particles is described.
