  • A case study of an active transmitting patch antenna revealed a characteristic loop locus of DC power versus RF output power as drive frequency was varied, with an operational bandwidth substantially smaller than the impedance bandwidth of the radiator. An approximate simulation technique, based on separation of the output capacitance of the power transistor, yielded easily visualized plots of power dependence on internal load impedance, and a simple interpretation of the experimental results in terms of a near-resonance condition between the output capacitance and output packaging inductance.

  • Radiation characteristics of a dual-mode inductor loaded patch antenna using zeroth order resonance and half wavelength resonance are investigated. The isolation between two radiation patterns from the two different modes is improved by increasing the forward radiation and decreasing the horizontal radiation of half wavelength resonance mode. The frequency difference between the two resonant frequencies increases as the dielectric constant of the antenna substrate decreases and the operating frequency increases.

  • In this paper, we propose and fabricate the dual-band microstrip patch antenna with parasitic patch for S-DMB(Satellite-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) and ITS (Intelligent Transport System) services. The measured - 10 dB bandwidth and the minimum return loss is 300 MHz and - 27 dB for S-DMB, 600 MHz and -17 dB for ITS, respectively. It is noticed that the measured and simulated results are agreed well. The S-DMB antenna has conical beam pattern in the vertical plane and has omni-directional beam pattern in the horizontal plane. The conical beam pattern has the maximum gain about 4.2 dBi when ${\theta}$ is $45^{\circ}$ at the center frequency of 2.6 GHz. The ITS antenna has directional beam pattern in the vertical plane that has maximum gain about 6.4 dBi when ${\theta}$ is $0^{\circ}$ at the center frequency of 5.8 GHz.

  • This paper proposes an antenna of the fork type structure that operates in the UWB (Ultra Wide Band) frequency band (3.1 ~ 10.6 GHz). The proposed antenna is attached a circular patch in order to obtain the UWB band characteristics to the fork-type patch antenna. The ground plane is implemented in a arc-shape configuration. The effect of various parameters of the modified fork type radiating patch and partial arc ground plane for UWB operation is investigated. The proposed antenna is made of $34.0{\times}50.0{\times}1.0mm^3$ and is fabricated on the permittivity 4.4 FR-4 substrate. The experiment results shown that the proposed antenna obtained the -10 dB impedance bandwidth 8200 MHz (2.7 ~ 10.9 GHz) covering the UWB bands. This result satisfied the characteristics of ultra-wideband and the proposed antenna will be applicable to an ultra wideband system.

  • In this paper, a small mu-zero zeroth order resonance(ZOR) antenna based on meta structure is proposed using parasitic patch at 5.8 GHz. The mu-zero ZOR antenna is designed by utilizing the resonance of series inductance and capacitance of mu-negative transmission line and its size can be further reduced by a simple parasitic patch. The parasitic patch can increase series capacitance of mu-negative transmission line related to a resonant frequency. We have simulated and optimized dimension of the parasitic patch using Ansys commercial simulator(HFSS). As a result, the antenna has the following characteristics: kr of 0.59, efficiency of 92 %, and gain of 6.57 dBi. Also, its size is reduced by 24 % compared to a conventional mu-zero ZOR antenna. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results.

  • The bandwidth enhancement of an aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna(ACMPA) with a high permittivity feed substrate suitable for the integration with MMIC is investigated using variation of an aperture width. As an aperture width increases, the 10 dB return loss bandwidth increases due to the increase of the mutual resonance region between a patch resonance and an aperture resonance. The bandwidth of an ACMPA with extended aperture width is increased up to 35.3 % from 20.8 % of the ACMPA with an aperture of a typical aspect ratio 10:1. The degradation of the radiation characteristics of an ACMPA due to the increase of an aperture width is very small.

  • The mutual coupling of a pair of microstrip patch antennas on a finite grounded dielectric substrate is influenced by the diffracted field of surface waves from the edges of a substrate. The effective dielectric constant of a grounded dielectric substrate determines the distance between the antenna center and the edge of a substrate to obtain the minimum mutual coupling between a pair of microstrip patch antennas. The optimum substrate size with the minimum mutual coupling is easily calculated using the image method. The optimum substrate sizes using the linage method are in good agreement with the results obtained by the full wave simulation.

  • In this paper, We proposed a UWB microstrip patch antenna with an O-shaped slot of the step structure and analyzed the characteristics of the antenna. In order to improve of frequency properties, size of the patch radiating element, radius change of the O-shaped slot, width of the feed line and a rectangular slot were optimized by CST simulation program. The proposed antenna showed that the 2.8GHz ~ 11.4GHz frequency, the minimum return loss and -10dB bandwidth were -32.39dB and 8.6GHz, respectively.

  • The inductive loaded patch antenna with suppressed radiation along the horizontal plane and enhanced broadside gain is investigated by adjusting the width and the via radius of a unit cell at a fixed length of a unit cell. The effects of the via radius and the width of the unit cell on the dispersion characteristics of the inductive loaded transmission line are investigated. The systematic study to determine the via radius and the width of the unit cell for the effective dielectric constant of the inductive loaded patch antenna close to 1 in order to suppress the radiation along the horizontal plane is presented. Inductive loaded patch antennas composed of five unit cells with resonant frequency of 5 GHz are designed and their radiation characteristics are presented. The horizontal radiation along the E-plane is greatly suppressed to less than -15 dBi when the effective dielectric constant of the inductive loaded patch antenna is slightly less than 1.
