This paper presents an application of digital signal processing to data acquired by the radio imaging method (RIM) that was adopted to measure moisture distribution inside the human body. RIM was originally developed for the mining industry; we are applying the method to a biomedical measurement because of its simplicity, economy, and safety. When a two-dimensional image was constructed from the measured data, the method provided insufficient resolution because the wavelength of the measurement medium, a weak electromagnetic wave in a VHF band, was longer than human tissues. We built and measured a phantom, a model simulating the human body, consisting of two water tanks representing large internal organs. A digital equalizer was applied to the measured values as a weight function, and images were reconstructed that corresponded to the original shape of the two water tanks. As a result, a two-dimensional image containing two individual peaks corresponding to the original two small water tanks was constructed. The result suggests the method was applicable to biomedical measurement by the assistance of digital signal processing. This technique may be applicable to home-based medical care and other situations in which safety, simplicity, and economy are important.
Background: Sex influences is important to understand behavioral manifestations in a large number of neuropsychiatric disorders. We found electrophysiological differences specifically related to the influence of sex on psychopathic traits. Methods: The resting electroencephalography (EEG) activity and low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) for the EEG spectral bands were evaluated in 38 teenagers with conduct disorder (CD). The 25 male and 13 female subjects had psychopathic traits as diagnosed using the Antisocial Process Screening Device. All of the included adolescents were assessed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria. The visually inspected EEG characteristics and the use of frequency-domain quantitative analysis techniques are described. Results: Quantitative EEG (QEEG) analysis showed that the slow-wave activities in the right frontal and left central regions were higher and the alpha-band powers in the left central and bitemporal regions were lower in the male than the female psychopathic traits group. The current source density showed increases in paralimbic areas at 2.73 Hz and decreases in the frontoparietal area at 9.37 Hz in male psychopathics relative to female psychopathics. Conclusions: These findings indicate that QEEG analysis and techniques of source localization can reveal sex differences in brain electrical activity between teenagers with CD and psychopathic traits that are not obvious in visual inspections.
Polymer flooding for enhancing hydrocarbon production injects into a reservoir polymer solution that is viscous. It is very important to monitor the behavior pattern of the polymer solution in order to evaluate the effectiveness of polymer flooding. To monitor the distribution of polymer solution and thus fluid substitution within the reservoir, we first construct seismic and resistivity rock physics models (RPMs), which are functions of reservoir parameters such as rocks and type of fluid, fluid saturation. For the seismic and resistivity RPMs, responses of seismic and electromagnetic (EM) tomography are numerically simulated as polymer injection, using two dimensional (2D) staggered-grid finite difference elastic modeling and 2.5D finite element EM modeling algorithms, respectively. In constructing RPM for EM tomography, three different reservoir rocks are considered: clean-sand, dispersed shale-sand, and sand-shale lamination rocks. The polymer solution is assumed to have 2 wt% of polymer as normally generated, while water is freshwater or saltwater. Further, neutron logging is also considered to check its sensitivity to polymer flooding. The techniques discussed in the paper are important in monitoring not only hydrocarbon but also geothermal reservoirs.

As a practical developing step of electromagnetic (EM) tomography technique, we quantitatively analyzed the effects of borehole fluid and casing on the borehole EM responses. The EM response turns out to have nothing to do with the property of the borehole fluid except in the close vicinity of the transmitter, which shows the wide perspective of the application of borehole EM. Single-hole responses in the presence of the steel casing throughly reflect those of the casing itself since its extremely high induction number or shallow skin depth. EM responses through steel casing do show the information of the host medium. In the near field region which corresponds to low frequency or the vicinity of the borehole, however, we can not separate the signal containing the information of the host from that of casing. Otherwise, the severe attenuation of energy in the casing at high frequencies renders the signal undetectable. The optimum frequency is, therefore, to be chosen to extract the information of the host considering both the property of the casing and the skin depth of the medium and the practical technique to determine the casing property through single-hole measurements is required.

Objectives The power spectral analysis of electroencephalogram has been widely used to reveal the pathophysiology of the alcoholic brain. However, the results were not consistent and the three dimensional study can be hardly found. The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the three dimensional electroencephalographic (EEG) activity of alcohol dependent patients using standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA). Methods The participants consisted of 30 alcohol dependent patients and 30 normal healthy controls. All the participants were males who had refrained from alcohol at least one month and were not taking any medications. Thirty two channel EEG data was collected in the resting state with eyes-closed condition during 30 seconds. The three dimensional data was compared between two groups using sLORETA for delta, theta, alpha, beta1, beta2, and beta3 frequency bands. Results sLORETA revealed significantly increased brain cortical activity in alpha, beta1, beta2, and beta3 bands each in alcohol dependent patients compared to normal controls. The voxels showing the maximum significance were in the left transverse temporal gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus, left anterior cingulate, and left fusiform gyrus in alpha, beta1, beta2, and beta3 bands respectively. Conclusions These results suggest that chronic alcohol intake may cause neurophysiological changes in cerebral activity. Therefore, the measuring of EEG can be helpful in understanding the pathophysiology of cognitive impairements in alcohol dependence.

We investigated the brain substrate of repetition priming on the implicit memory taskusing low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) with high-density 128 channel EEG and individual MRI as a realistic head model. Thirteen right-handed, healthy subjects performed a word/nonword discrimination task, in which the words and nonwords were presented visually, and some of the words appeared twice with a lag of one or five items. All of the subjects exhibited repetition priming with respect to the behavioral data, in which a faster reaction time was observed to the repeated word (old word) than to the first presentation of the word (new word). The old words elicited more positive-going potentials than the new words, beginning at 200 ms and lasting until 500 ms post-stimulus. We conducted source reconstruction using LORETA at a latency of 400 ms with the peak mean global field potentials and used statistical parametric mapping for the statistical analysis. We found that the source elicited by the old words exhibited a statistically significant current density reduction in the left inferior frontal gyrus. This is the first study to investigate the generators of repetition priming using voxel-by-voxel statistical mapping of the current density with individual MRI and high-density EEG.

The techniques using geophysical methods were adopted to obtain quantitative criteria for assessment of grouting effectiveness. Various surface and borehole geophysical surveys including seismic, GPR(ground penetrating radar), resistivity and electromagnetic methods were conducted in fractured rock pilot site before and after grouting execution. However, it is not enough that geophysical data provide criteria for field engineers to confirm the grouting effectiveness in that site even though there is somewhat difference before and after grouting. This study will be continued for the detailed criteria and assessment of grouting effectiveness in other sites.
The analysis of ground subsidence stability was conducted for the residential area located on the limestone corrosion zone. For the investigation of the cavity distribution in limestone region, various geophysical investigations such as electroresistivity tomography, electromagnetic prospecting are carried out. Geotechnical field tests with drilling are also carried out for the evaluation of the ground characteristics. Based upon their results, numerical modeling is performed for the simulation and prediction of the ground subsidence with the conditions of cavity geometry and groundwater level. The main factor to cause the ground subsidence is estimated as the draw down of the groundwater level below soil overburden, which disturbs the mechanical equilibrium of ground and drives washing away the overburden soil through the cavity and solace subsidence. It seemed that it is essential to maintain the groundwater level continuously above the shallow cavity for the prevention of the ground subsidence on the limestone corrosion zone.
This paper briefly reviews the history of the Korean geophysics and analyze the current status of geophysical researches. And the future prospects of geophysics are discussed based on social demands for the science and technology in Korea. About thirty universities offer geophysics courses in their academic curricula. Although the number of Ph.D. graduates in geophysics had been small until the year of 1990, but is rapidly increasing. In recent years about $7{\sim}8$ Ph.D's are produced every year. The major geophysical methods used in Ph.D. theses are seismic, electrical and electromagnetic methods, and earthquake waves and research themes are computational geophysics, which involve data processing, modelling, inversion and tomography, geological structures, and paleomagnetic studies in the order of numbers. The Solid Earth Geophysics is generally distinguished in two categories such as "Global Geophysics" and "Exploration Geophysics". However, they are intimately connected, and overlap in many sectors, especially in large scale research projects. The global geophysics has a more academic and general scientific meaning, and several research groups in Korean universities are carrying out the earthquake seismology and paleomagnetic studies. On the other hand the exploration geophysics focuses on practical application of geophysical concepts, and the public research institutes conduct large projects for exploration of energy and mineral resources and to cope with environmental and natural disaster problems. The geophysical studies for local geology and regional crustal structure utilize various survey methods and usually cover both academic and exploration purposes. The computational geophysics constitutes the indispensable theoretical backgrounds for all geophysical sectors. Many young Korean geophysicists, who have strong background in mathematics and physics, devote to the computational geophysics and several groups have made the internationally highest level achievements. But, Korean geophysicists have to expand their research interests to include more global-scale, high-tech researches and collaborative works with various other science groups.
Background: Non-invasive painless signaling therapy (NPST) is an electro-cutaneous treatment that converts endogenous pain information into synthetic non-pain information. This study explored whether pain improvement by NPST in failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients is related to cerebral modulation. Methods: Electroencephalography (EEG) analysis was performed in 11 patients with FBSS. Subjects received daily NPST for 5 days. Before the first treatment, patients completed the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and Beck Depression Inventory and underwent baseline EEG. After the final treatment, they responded again to the BPI, reported the percent pain improvement (PPI), and then underwent post-treatment EEG. If the PPI grade was zero, they were assigned to the ineffective group, while all others were assigned to the effective group. We used standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA) to explore the EEG current-source distribution (CSD) associated with pain improvement by NPST. Results: The 11 participants had a median age of 67.0 years, and 63.6% were female. The sLORETA images revealed a beta-2 CSD increment in 12 voxels of the right anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG) and the right medial frontal area. The point of maximal CSD changes was in the right ACG. The alpha band CSD increased in 2 voxels of the left transverse gyrus. Conclusions: Pain improvement by NPST in FBSS patients was associated with increased cerebral activity, mainly in the right ACG. The change in afferent information induced by NPST seems to be associated with cerebral pain perception.
