  • A theoretical method for the TE polarized electromagnetic scattering on a periodic strip grating over a grounded dielectric slab is considered. The numerical results for an analysis of the plane wave scattering from the structure are presented such as normalized mode amplitude and relative reflected power against normalized dielectric slab height, relative reflected power against angle of incidence and distribution of strip current density. Detailed discussions on the Bragg blazing phenomena observed in the geometry are give.

  • In this paper, when a E-polarized plane wave is incident on the grating consisting of tapered resistive strips, electromagnetic scattering is analyzed using the method of moments(MoM). The induced current density of each resistive strip in a grounded double dielectric layer is expected to blow up at both edges. To satisfy this, the induced surface current density is expanded in a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The scattered electromagnetic fields are expanded in a series of Floquet mode functions. The boundary conditions are applied to obtain the unknown current coefficients. According to the variation of the involving parameters such as strip width and spacing and angle of the incident field, numerical simulations are performed by applying the Fourier-Galerkin moment method. The numerical results of the normalized reflected power for resistive strips case for several resistivities are obtained.

  • In this paper, the computation of electromagnetic wave scattering is presented for chaff clouds which is widely used to protect an aircraft. The RCS depends on the wind, the aircraft velocity, and the atmospheric diffusion. It is assumed that the RF chaff is a thin dipole antenna and the RCS is calculated based on the scattering wave theory. The theoretical estimation and the simulation results are compared and shown a good agreement.

  • In this paper, the scattered field from a perfectly conducting fractal surface by the Monte-Carlo moment method was computed. An one-dimensional fractal surface was generated by using the fractional Brownian motion model. Back scattering coefficients are calculated with different values of the spectral parameter(S$\_$0/), and fractal dimension(D) which determine characteristics of the fractal surface. The number of surface realization for the computed field, the point number, and the width of surface realization are set to be 80, 2048, and 64L, respectively. In order to verify the computed results these results are compared with those of small perturbation methods, which show good agreement between them.

  • In this paper, a novel approximate solution for scattering by a very thin planar homogeneous dielectric scatterer with an arbitrary shape is formulated. This solution is based on a volumetric integral equation and is expressed in terms of Fourier transform. It is shown that the obtained solution is reduced to an exact solution for an infinite dielectric slab. For 2D, or 3D scatterers, the formulation is verified numerically. Especially fur edge-on TM polarized wave incidence a closed-form solution of backscattering from a thin dielectric half-plane is formulated, which is very accurate for wide range of normalized surface impedance except very low impedances(│η│〈0.5).

  • The electromagnetic wave absorption sheets were fabricated by mixing of $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ nanocrystalline soft magnetic powder, charcoal powder and polymer based binder. The complex permittivity, complex permeability, and scattering parameter have been measured using a network analyzer in the frequency range of 10 MHz$\sim$10 GHz. The results showed that complex permittivity of sheets was largely dependent on the frequency and the amount of charcoal powder : The permittivity was improved up to 100 MHz, however the value was decreased above 1 GHz. The power loss of electromagnetic wave absorption data showed almost the same tendency as the results of complex permittivity. However, the complex permeability was not largely affected by the frequency, and the values were decreased with the addition of charcoal powder. Based on the results, it can be summarized that the addition of charcoal powder was very effective to improve the EM wave absorption in the frequency range of 10 MHz$\sim$1 GHz.

  • Generally, the properties of metamaterials are analyzed based on the infinite array of the unit cells. In real application of the metamaterial, however, the array has to be finite. Hence, it is important that a method can analyze the effect of the finite array of the metamaterial. In this paper, a model is proposed which can calculate the scattering by a large-size finite array of an I-shaped metamaterial without a full-wave simulation. The proposed model is based on the surface current estimation of each unit cells. The ratio of the current distribution on a finite array of the metamaterial to that of the infinite array of the same metamaterial for a TM polarized incident wave is approximated as a quartic polynomial. The coefficients of the polynomial are a function of the physical dimension of the metallic patch. Hence, the current distribution of the finite metamaterial can be estimated based on the proposed polynomial and the current of the infinite array. The scattered field is calculated by using the surface current model. The proposed model is numerically and experimentally verified by comparing calculated and measured RCS(Radar Cross Section) data.

  • A Hybrid Finite Element Method(HFEM) is applied to solve the electrormagnetic scattering from multi-layered dielectric cylinders. An unbounde region is divided into local boundary regions where a practical differential equation solution is obtained, with the remaining unbounded region represented by a boundary integral equation. If sources, media inhomogeneities, and anisotropies are local, a surgace may be defined to enclose them. Therefore the integral region so defined is bounded, and differential techniques may be used there. Also, in the re- maining unbounded region a boundary integral equation may be formulated using only a simple free - space green's function. Therefore, The local boundary is represented by a boundary - value problem with boundary conditions and solved by the finite element method. The advantage of the proposed method is simple and efficient in the work of electromagnetic scattering. The validity of the results have been verified by comparing results of other method(boundary element method). Examples has been presented to calculate the scattered fields of lossy dielectric cylinders of arbitray cross section.

  • We report a theoretical research for the condition of electromagnetic shield breaching when a narrow aperture is punctured in thin metal film. To calculate electromagnetic field transmission through a narrow slit, a Rayleigh wave expansion has been applied for free standing, thin metal film. We found that the DC electric field allows perfect transmission when the length of the slit is infinite, regardless of the other geometrical factors such as slitwidth and thickness. Slitwidth dependent transmission spectra as a function of frequency shows a cutoff frequency that decreases almost linearly to the slitwidth, giving that almost successful shielding is only possible when the slitwidth is smaller than 1 micron.
