Pulsed-GMAW의 금속 이행 현상에 관한 동적 해석 (Dynamic Analysis of Metal Transfer in Pulsed-GMAW)

  • The metal transfer phenomenon of the pulsed-GMAW is simulated by formulating the electromagnetic force incorporated with the Volume of Fluid algorithm. The free surface profiles, pressure and velocity distributions within the drop are computed numerically. Axial velocity and acceleration generated during peak current period are found to have a significant effect on drop detachment. Therefore, the accelerated inertia force becomes one of important factors affecting metal transfer in the pulsed-GMAW. When the pulse current parameters are selected properly, the molten drop is detached just after current pulse, and the operating range of the pulsing frequency increases with higher peak current and duty cycle. Calculated operating ranges show reasonably good agreements with the available experimental data.

  • A transient two-dimensional (2D) model was developed for investigating the heat and fluid flow in old pools and determining velocity profile and temperature distribution for the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding process. The mathematical formulation deals with the driving farces (electromagnetic, buoyancy, surface tension and plasma drag forces) as well as energy exchange between the molten filler metal droplet and weld pools. A general thermofluid-mechanics computer program, PHOENICS, was employed to numerically solve the governing equation with the associated source terms. The results of computation have shown that the electromagnetic and surface tension farces as will as the molten filler metal droplet have major influence in shaping the weld pool geometry.

  • Magnesium alloys are the lightest in commercial alloys. Also, they have high damping capacity and the shielding effect of electromagnetic waves. Recently, magnesium alloys have received considerable attention from the transportation industry. Many manufacturers of cars try to increase the use of magnesium alloys in their product. In order to evaluate the weldability of magnesium alloy, gas-tungsten arc welding(GTAW) have been applied to the AZ31, AZ61 and AZ91 alloys and established the optimum welding conditions.

레이저 홈가공에서 편광빔의 다중반사 효과 (Effects of Multiple Reflections of Polarized Beam in Laser Grooving)

  • A numerical model for multiple reflection effects of a polarized beam on laser grooving has been developed. The surface of the treated material is assumed to reflect laser irradiation in a fully specular fashion. Combining electromagnetic wave theory with Fresnel's relation, the reflective behavior of a groove surface can be obtained as well as the change of the polarization status in the reflected wave field. The material surface is divided into a number of rectangular patches using a bicubic surface representation method. The net radiative flux far these patch elements is obtained by standard ray tracing methods. The changing state of polarization of the electric field after reflection was included in the ray tracing method. The resulting radiative flux is combined with a set of three-dimensional conduction equations governing conduction losses into the medium, and the resulting groove shape and depth are found through iterative procedures. It is observed that reflections of a polarized beam play an important role not only in increasing the material removal rate but also in forming different final groove shapes. Comparison with available experimental results for silicon nitride shows good agreement for the qualitative trends of the dependence of groove shapes on the electric field vector orientation.

SH-EMAT를 이용한 알루미늄 박판의 두께감육 평가 (Evaluation of Thickness Reduction in an Aluminum Sheet using SH-EMAT)

  • In this paper, a non-contact method of evaluating the thickness reduction in an aluminum sheet caused by corrosion and friction using SH-EMAT (shear horizontal, electromagnetic acoustic transducer) is described. Since this method is based on the measurement of the time-of-flight and amplitude change of guided waves caused from the thickness reduction, it provides information on the thinning defects. Information was obtained on the changes of the various wave features, such as their time-of-flight and amplitude, and their correlations with the thickness reduction were investigated. The interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes were used for the detection of thinning defects. The measurements of these features using SH waves were performed on aluminum specimens with regions thinned by 7.2% to 29.5% of the total thickness. It is shown that the time-of-flight measurement provides an estimation of the thickness reduction and length of the thinning defects.

  • Dual electromagnetic sensor is used for sensing the weld line. The sensor consists of excitation and two sensing coil wound over the ferro-magnetic core. By using the dual sensor, the effect of noise is minimized. It is based on the generation of eddy currents in the welding plate by passing current through the excitation coil. The sensor can be used to track the butt joints having no gap between them, where a vision based sensor fails to track. Sensor sensitivity depends on the number of coil turns, frequency of excitation, distance of a sensor from the work piece, diameter of core, etc. The whole system consists of a sensor, a signal processing board, a motion controller and a personnel computer (PC). The raw sensor signal is processed using the signal processing board. It consists of amplification, rectification, filtering, averaging, offset adjustment, etc. Based on sensor data, the motion controller adjusts the position of a welding torch.

  • A lid & frame used as the shield of electromagnetic waves in cellular phones are composed of frame, which is welded at their electric circuits, and lid, of which debonding and joining are available from the frame. Typical lid & frame were mechanically bonded by contact between the embossing of lid and the piercing of frame Bonding force of this part have to allow us to detach the lid from frame for exchange or fix of the electric part and have to be high enough to protect the electric part from external impacts. This study is designed to estimate the effect of design variable of lid & frame on its debonding force. Estimations were performed by finite element method.

  • Increase of the requirements on quality of welded structures necessitates the improvement of known inspection methods and the introduction of progressive new techniques. Non-destructive methods are the most advanced, but there are considerable difficulties in using the methods of radiography with electromagnetic rays and ultrasonic testing in the inspection of dissimilar metal friction welds, because their physical and mechanical properties are changed very rapidly at the interface. The values of simple mechanical test for dissimilar metal friction welds have always been dubious, as the strength of the bond is often greater than that of the softer materials being jointed. Thus, in this paper some conventional mechanical testing methods are examined in an attempt to determine a technique for dissimilar metal friction welds, which will give a reliable quantitative indication of the weld quality. From the considered static and dynamic testing methods the impact bending test on unnotched and notched specimens are the most sensitive to find out the small joining defects in the interface.

  • 열을 이용한 접합은 소재 간 열역학적 차이에 의한 열 변형 및 잔류응력 등 원하지 않은 결과를 야기한다. 폭발력 또는 전자기력을 이용한 고상 접합은 열이 사용되지 않아 열역학적 차이가 있는 소재접합에 이점이 있다. 이때, 해당 접합은 짧은 시간 내(${\mu}s$) 이루어지며, 접합면에서 고속 및 대 변형이 동반된다. 수치해석 모델은 고속 충돌 접합 메커니즘을 이해하는 데 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 하지만 고속 및 대 변형이 나타나는 해석에서 전통적인 라그랑지안 기법은 격자 얽힘이 발생해 결과의 신뢰성이 낮다. 본 연구는 무격자 수치해석 방식의 SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics)를 이용하여 열역학적 차이가 있는 Cu와 CP-Ti의 고속 충돌 접합을 수행하였고 경계면 결합 형상이 발생함을 확인하였다. 해석의 결과로 경계면 결합 형상이 매개변수(충돌 속도, 충돌 각도)의 관계에 따라 형상의 정도(직선, 소용돌이), 주기, 길이 등이 다르게 나타나는 것을 확인 및 비교하였다.
