  • This Paper Presents the method for detecting a partial discharge(PD) using an electromagnetic wave measured by an antenna. The various electromagnetic waves are measured in the laboratory and wavelet transform, which is provides a direct quantitative measure of spectral content in the time-frequency domain, are applied for identifying the property of electromagnetic waves. Also, the statistical method and self-organizing feature map(SOFM) are applied for the pattern recognition of electromagnetic waves. The proposed method is shown to be useful for detecting electromagnetic waves emitted for PD in test data.

  • Reduction of electromagnetic vibration and acoustic noise from three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors (IMs) is very important, particularly from the standpoint of environmental considerations. Although the electromagnetic vibration of IMs has been studied for several years, the relationships between the radial distribution of the electromagnetic vibration and noise and the electromagnetic forces responsible for them have not yet been analyzed in sufficient detail. In the present study, we investigated this relationship experimentally for a small IM under different load conditions. Our results clearly show that the radial distributions of the dominant electromagnetic vibration and noise components match the mode shape of the dominant electromagnetic force producing these components.

  • With the progress of the electronics industry and radio communication technology, certain problems, such as electromagnetic interference(EMI), have arisen due to the increased use of electromagnetic(EM) waves. International organizations such as CISPR, FCC, and ANSI have provided the standards for the EM wave environment and for the countermeasure of the electromagnetic compatibility(EMC). EM wave absorbers are used for constructing an anechoic chamber to test and measure EMI and electromagnetic susceptibility(EMS). In this paper, we have designed an one-body EM(electromagnetic) wave ferrite absorber, based on the equivalent material constants method for both normally and obliquely incident waves, whose absorption abilities are superior to that of the conventional ones. The fabricated absorber has a thickness of 27.68 mm and shows an absorption ability over 20 ㏈ in the frequency from 30 MHz to 6 ㎓.

  • Radio frequency (RF) and microwave power is one of the key quantities in the framework of electromagnetic measurement standards. Therefore, the stability of the power standard is essential to users' reliable measurements in various areas. Coaxial and waveguide thermistor mounts are used as transfer standards of RF and microwave power. Over decades, the effective efficiencies of thermistor mounts have been measured using coaxial and waveguide microcalorimeters in the frequency range of 10 MHz-40 GHz. The measurement uncertainty of the effective efficiency is evaluated. Results show that the power standards have been well maintained within the measurement uncertainty.

  • Electromagnetic forces generate vibrations in the end-winding of large generators. A finite element analysis using a commercial S/W is performed to calculate electromagnetic force of end-winding in two pole generator for 500 MW fossil power plant. Also, this paper presents analytical and experimental modal analysis results of generator end- winding. Using validated FE model, 3D electromagnetic model which computes the forces on the end-winding is coupled with a 3D mechanical model which calculates the dynamic displacement and stress under electromagnetic forces. These results will be used to evaluate reliability of end-winding and applied to update model.

  • Recently, the amount of electrical and electronic systems is increasing rapidly with the development of advanced vehicles such as ADAS, smart cars, connected cars, automated driving systems. It is necessary to examine the electromagnetic compatibility of vehicles equipped with those systems. The standards and regulations for examination of electromagnetic compatibility have been established and revised according to newly introduced electrical and electronic systems. They are administered in some different international standard associations such as ISO, CISPR, UN/ECE and are somewhat complex and bulky. In the study, the improvements and changes in them are tracked and analyzed chronologically. Research of the history of them will be helpful for understanding progress and forecasting the direction of development.

  • We compared electromagnetic(EM) wave absorption properties between Alnico magnet (A) and (B) with different magnetic properties. Also, we investigated the effect of carbon, thickness of absorbers, and Alnico contents on EM wave absorption, and clarified the relation between Alnico content and central frequency.

  • In this manuscript, we consider electromagnetic imaging of perfectly conducting cracks completely hidden in a homogeneous material via boundary measurements. For this purpose, we carefully derive a topological derivative formula based on the asymptotic expansion formula for the existence of a perfectly conducting inclusion with a small radius. With this, we introduce a topological derivative based imaging algorithm and discuss its properties. Various numerical examples with noisy data show the effectiveness and limitations of the imaging algorithm.

  • The transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cells are widely used for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and field probe calibrations. We propose the verification of TEM mode with statistical method using a four-port TEM cell. The verification results are compared with Normal, Rayleigh, and Gamma distribution. As a result, the 75 % quantile of the Rayleigh distribution is excellent agreement with the true quantiles for a number of calibration points.

  • Electromagnetic wave absorbers with the shape of sheet have been fabricated and their absorption properties are measured. The fabricated ferrite absorbers have different particle sizes and the absorbtion property is increased with decreasing the size of particle in a certain frequency range of 2.4∼3.2 ㎓.
