  • There are lots of merits in the electrodeless lighting. But it is not widely used because the price is too high though it has very good quality and efficiency. So it is necessary to develop a electrodeless lighting which can be widely used with its merit.

  • Electrodeless fluorescent lamps utilizing an inductively coupled plasma were found to have a long lifetime and high efficacy and now are used in some indoor and outdoor applications. This paper gives a basic data of electrodeless fluorescent lamp ‘QL’(Philips). The experimetal system consist of QL 85W/840 lamp and QL 85W S/03 ballast.

  • Characteristics of electrodeless lamp as a load of the ballast is different compared to normal fluorescent lamp because the lamp includes the magnetics for inductive discharging process. So somewhat different modeling is necessary to make a proper power match between the lamp and ballast. Modeling of an electrodeless lamps, Endura of Osram, is presented in this paper. Simulation with a result of experiment is given for a verification of proposed model.

  • A new scheme of dimmable ballast system for the electrodeless fluorescent lamp is proposed. The proposed scheme is composed of the conventional ballast system and the wireless communication part using an EPLD. As a result, the proposed system has a dimming control capability by wireless communication technology. In this paper, wireless dimming control system for electrodeless fluorescent lamp was introduced.

  • This paper presents the results of a study on an electrodeless high intensity discharge (HID) lamp system that is powered by circularly polarized microwaves (CPMs). The technique to generate CPMs enables an electrodeless high intensity discharge lamp to be turned on without the retation of the bulb but conventional electrodeless high intensity discharge lamps use rotating bulbs in order to prevent a puncture in a hot spots that are formed by the linearly polarized microwaves in the circular cavity. The technique to generate CPMs is described and the salient features of the lamp characteristics are presented.

High Temperature Reliability Study of Low Frequency In-door Electrodeless Lamp (무전극형광램프의 고온 신뢰성 연구)

  • Electrodeless lamp is famous for its long life. But its reliability is dependent not only on electrodes but also on materials and structures. To evaluate end product's reliability, we studied high temperature durability by $60^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$ and $90^{\circ}C$ temperature tests, and predicted failure times by an exponential model through regression analysis. However, the test showed that temperature does not affect degradation of electrodeless lamps. Their luminous outputs degrade during the early time of the test (till 250 hours) and then converge to a saturation points. Also, '410nm ~ 530nm' spectrum degrades more than other spectra.

  • Recently, the environmental problem has received considerable attention. so, many lamps have been developing for environmental requirement and energy efficiency, also, at glow discharge lamp researchers try to reduce energy spending that is power saving lamp. this kind requirement agree with strong points of electrodeless fluorescent lamp has received to now lighting sauce. In this paper, at the research and development of Electrodeless Fluorescent Lamp phase, according to ferrite C.F.D(Computational Fluid Dynamics) Simulation and lamp brightness character are measured to find optimization design requirements of RF antenna which is impotent for emission of lamp.

  • A dimmable ballast system for the electrodeless fluorescent lamp is proposed. The proposed scheme is composed of the electronic ballast and the wireless communication part. They both are realized with one EPLD (Erasable Programmable Logic Device). The dimming levels of each lamps can be controlled by a management system through wireless communication technology. 10 ballasts are used for the group lighting system and the experiment results show the system works well.

  • This paper presents a remote dimming control method for the electrodeless lamps using 2.4 GHz RF communication. Since the proposed dimming method are implemented with a simplest open loop control using ISM band HF modem and low cost MCUs, and the remote controller has just several functions such as On/Off and duty ratio increasing/decreasing. It can be made with low cost. In this paper, the detailed digital logics of the proposed remote dimming control are described and the experimental results are presented.
