Optical and Electromagnetic Distribution of Ring-shaped Electrodeless Fluorescent Lamps (환형 무전극 램프의 광학적, 전자계적 특성)

  • Ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp is removed the internal electrodes and heating filaments that are a light-limiting factor of conventional fluorescent lamps. The ring-shaped electrodeless lamp is intended as a high efficacy replacement for the incandescent reflector lamp in many applications. In this paper, maxwell 3D finite element analysis program (Ansoft) was used to obtain electromagnetic properties associated with the coil and nearby structures. The electromagnetic emitting properties were presented by 3D simulation software operated at 250[㎑]and some specific conditions. The optical measurement measured luminance and a temperature and an optical spectrum distribution for 10 minutes in a one minute interval at the same time.

  • Development of light sources has been constantly grown after incandescent lamps had been invented by Thomas Edison. Recently, the eletrodeless lamp is introduced as a new light source of a high efficacy and long life. But, despite of such advantages, luminaires of electrodeless lamps are not widely used. It is necessary to develope the design of the luminaire together with light source development. In this paper, design algorithm of the luminaire that is adaptable to electrodeless lamp and use Genetic Algorithm as a optimization method to find luminous intensity distribution required is introduced.

  • Electrodeless fluorescent lamp exhibit two modes of operation: a low density mode in which the power is capacitively coupled to the plasma and which is known as the E-mode, and a higher density mode which is an inductive discharge known as the H-mode. The transition between these two(E to H) mode exhibits hysteresis. It is observed that transition currents change at different frequencies and hysteresis exists not only between the starting and minimum maintaining currents of the electromagnetic mode (H mode) discharge but also between the starting and minimum maintaining currents of the electrostatic mode (E mode) discharge. Hysteresis effect can be important role in dimming system.

  • A novel dimming algorithm for the electronic ballast of the electrodeless lamp is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on the burst dimming method and controls the duty ratio for the two switches of the electronic ballast by pulse width modulated signal. The preposed algorithm was implemented by a fully digital circuit using EPLD device. To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, the implemented control circuit was applied to the electronic ballast for a 100W electrodeless fluorescent lamp. As a result, the wide illumination dimming range from 5% to 100% was obtained.

  • Power supply technique for electrodeless lamps, especially Endura of Osram, is presented in this paper. The power supply uses a conventional power factor correction technique due to its proved performance. But in the inverter stage, resonant converter with parallel loading scheme is used to mitigate the variation of matching circuit characteristics by time varying load. Less performance but sufficient to predict future success compared to Osram's one is verified as a result of experiment of the prototype.

  • Power supply technique for electrodeless lamps, especially self-oscillation method, is presented in this paper for Endura of Osram. The power supply uses different method for high efficiency at high frequency operation compared to the conventional method using saturable transformer. Exact parameter tuning using simulation is suggested for effective design for real applications.

  • This paper reviews the dimming technology of the electrodeless lamp. Frequently used three methods are technologically reviewed and the performances are individually compared. Then, a lot of circuit technology for constructing the power supply m also reviewed and circuit characteristics are discussed.
