  • As the use of lithium-ion secondary batteries is rapidly increasing due to the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market, the disposal and recycling of spent batteries after use has been raised as a serious problem. Since stored energy must be removed in order to recycle the spent batteries, an effective discharging process is required. In this study, graphite and NCM622 were used as active materials to manufacture coin-type half cells and full cells, and the electrochemical behavior occurring during overdischarge was analyzed. When the positive and negative electrodes are overdischarged respectively using a half-cell, a conversion reaction in which transition metal oxide is reduced to metal occurs first in the positive electrode, and a side reaction in which Cu, the current collector, is corroded following decomposition of the SEI film occurs in the negative electrode. In addition, a side reaction during overdischarge is difficult to occur because a large polarization at the initial stage is required. When the full cell is overdischarged, the cell reaches 0 V and the overdischarge ends with almost no side reaction due to this large polarization. However, if the full cell whose capacity is degraded due to the cycle is overdischarged, corrosion of the Cu current collector occurs in the negative electrode. Therefore, cycled cell requires an appropriate treatment process because its electrochemical behavior during overdischarge is different from that of a fresh cell.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of conditions for quenching and/or tempering on the corrosion and hydrogen diffusion behavior of ultra-strong automotive steel in terms of the localized plastic strain related to the dislocation density, and the precipitation of iron carbide. In this study, a range of analytical and experimental methods were deployed, such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy, electron back scatter diffraction, electrochemical permeation technique, slow-strain rate test (SSRT), and electrochemical polarization test. The results showed that the hydrogen diffusion parameters involving the diffusion kinetics and hydrogen solubility, obtained from the permeation experiment, could not be directly indicative of the resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) occurring under the condition with low hydrogen concentration. The SSRT results showed that the partitioning process, leading to decrease in localized plastic strain and dislocation density in the sample, results in a high resistance to HE-induced by aqueous corrosion. Conversely, coarse iron carbide, precipitated during heat treatment, weakened the long-term corrosion resistance. This can also be a controlling factor for the development of ultra-strong steel with superior corrosion and HE resistance.

  • When butyl rubber dissolved in toluene was used as a binder of carbon powder, carbon paste showed a mechanical hardness due to the fast volatility of the solvent just after the electrode fabrication. With a view of validating its quantitative electrochemical behaviors, its kinetic parameters, e.g. the symmetry factor, the exchange current density, the capacity of the double layer, the Michaelis constant, the time constant and other factors were investigated. Our experimental facts indicated that butyl rubber is available for a promising binder of carbon powder.

  • This work describes the effect of binders, such as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), CMC+Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and PTFE, on the electrochemical and mechanical properties of activated carbon-electrode for electric double layer capacitor. The cell capacitors using the electrode bound with binary binder composed of CMC and PTFE, especially m composition CMC ; PTFE = 60 : 40 wt %, has exhibited the better rate capability and the lower internal resistance than those of the cell capacitor with CMC. On the other hand, the sheet type electrode kneaded with PTFE was bonded with conductive adhesive on Al foil. This cell capacitor using the electrode with PTFE exhibited the best mechanical properties and rate capability compared to the CMC and CMC+PTFE one These behaviors could be explained by the well-developed network structure of PTFE fibrils during the kneading process.

  • The effect of post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) of SCM440 steel was investigated with parameters such as micro-Vickers hardness, corrosion potential, polarization behaviors, galvanic current, Al anode generating current and Al anode weight loss, etc. Each hardness of three parts(HAZ, BM, WM) by PWHT is lower than each of as-welded parts. However, hardness of WM area was the highest among those three parts in case of both PWHT and as-welded. Corrosion potential of WM part was the highest among those three parts and WM area was also acted as cathode without regard to PWHT. The magnitude of corrosion potential difference among three parts by PWHT was larger than that of three parts of as-welded, and corrosion current by galvanic cell of these three parts by PWHT was also larger compared to as-welded. Therefore, it is suggested that corrosion resistance property of SCM440 steel is decreased by PWHT than as-welded. However, both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss were also increased by PWHT compared to as-welded when SCM400 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode.

  • This work describes the effect of conducting materials on the electrochemical performances of electric double layer capacitor. Three kinds of Carbon black, such as Acethylene Black, Super P Black, Ketjen black supplied by Denki Kagaku Kogyo, MMM Carbon, Ketjen Black International Co. respectively, was added in carbon-Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) electrode, which composition is activated carbon : carbon black : PTFE = 80 : 15 : 5 wt.%, and were compared with their electrochemical properties. The electrode with Ketjen Black has showed the lowest resistance than other carbon black, and also exhibited the better rate capability between 0.5 mA/cm$^2$ ∼ 100 mA/cm$^2$ current density in unit cell capacitor. On the other hand, as increasing the composition of Ketjen Black, the specific resistances of electrodes were decreased and Ketjen Black content higher than 15 wt% increased. The best rate capability was obtained at the electrode with 15 wt.% of Ketjen Black in unit cell capacitor. This behaviors would be correlated with the dense structure of electrode.

  • Effects of Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB), which is a kind of cationic surfactants, and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS), which is a kind of anionic surfactants on the anodic formation of nanoporous niobium oxide were compared. The addition of SDS could protect the surface from dissolution for long time, leading to the formation of niobium oxide with a double thickness (~400 nm) compared to that prepared without surfactant, whereas dissolution seriously occurred in the solution containing CTAB. The different behaviors were attributed to the interaction between the surfactants with positive (or negative) charge and positively charged niobium oxide.

Methods: The specimens were used, respectively, for experiment, Arc Ion plating was carried out for dental casting alloys using ZrN coated materials with nitrogen gas. ZrN coated surface of each specimen was observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), vickers hardness tester, and electrochemical tester. Results: The current density of ZrN coated specimen was smaller than that of non-coated specimen in 0.9% NaCl solution. Pit nucleated at scratch of specimen. The pitting corrosion resistant |$E_{max}-E_{rep}$| increased in order of ZrN coated (110 mV), and non-coated wire (100 mV). Conclusion: The corrosion potential of the ZrN coated specimen was comparatively high. the surface of ZrN coated specimen was more smooth than that of other kinds of non-coated specimen. ZrN coated surface showed higher hardness than that of non-coated surface.

  • Porous anodic aluminum oxide layer for nano templates was prepared in acidic solutions. In order to investigate effects of 2nd anodization on ordered formation behaviors of the porous oxide layers, electrochemical and microstructural studies were performed, primarily using TEM, FE- SEM, AFM, and Ultramicrotomy. The pore diameter of the anodic oxide layer increased approximately linearly with increasing voltages, and to the contrary, the pore density decreased. It was shown that 2nd anodizing on the cell base after dissolving 1st anodic oxide layer was remarkably effective for forming ordered array of the pores, comparing with the case for 1st anodization only. And for controlling the diameter of pores, widening method by chemical dissolution seemed more practical than by electrochemical methods.
