  • Recently, as environmental regulations for earth-moving equipment have been tightening, advanced systems such as electronic control, have been introduced for energy savings. An IMV (Independent Metering Valve) consisting of four 2-way valves, is an electro-hydraulic control systems that provides more flexible controllability, and potential for energy savings in excavators, when compared to the conventional 4-way spool valve system. To fully maximize use of an IMV, the bi-directional flow control valve that can regulate a large amount of flow in both directions, should be adopted. The hydraulic circuit of an IMV applied to an excavator from an overseas construction equipment company, reveals the flow control valve with the compound of proportional solenoid valve for first stage, and 2-way spool valve for the second stage. Moreover, the two spools are interconnected by a feedback spring, presumed to compensate for flow force acting on the second stage spool. This paper addresses the static analysis of flow control valve in an IMV to investigate the improvement of robustness, against flow force by the feedback spring. From the steady-state analysis of flow control valve model, it can be concluded that the feedback spring facilitates maintaining linearity of spool displacement for control input, and relatively constant flow for load disturbance.

  • We carried out the experiments on particle deposition onto the cleanroom wall panels. And then we investigated the particle deposition characteristic coefficients for electrostatic voltages and particle size. It was found that there is little difference in characteristics of the particle deposition between the steel panel and the anti-static coating panel. In case of that the particle size is under $1.0{\mu}m$, the particle deposition characteristic coefficient becomes larger as the electrostatic voltage induced to the cleanroom wall panel is increasing. Where in case of that the particle size is over $3.0{\mu}m$, the particle deposition characteristic coefficients do not show any differences with the electrostatic voltages. It is due to that the electrostatic force is the major particle transport mechanism for submicron particles, while the gravitational settling is the major particle transport mechanism for overmicron particles when the electro-static voltages are induced to the cleanroom wall panel.

  • In many electro-devices, the vacuum process is used as the manufacturing process. However, the vacuum process has a problem, it is difficult to apply to a continuous process such as a R2R(roll to roll) printing process. In this paper, we propose an ESD (electro static deposition) printing process has been used to apply an organic solar cell of thin film forming. ESD is a method of liquid atomization by electrical forces, an electrostatic atomizer sprays micro-drops from the solution injected into the capillary with electrostatic force generated by electric potential of about several tens kV. The organic solar cell based on a P3HT/PCBM active layer and a PEDOT:PSS electron blocking layer prepared from ESD method shows solar-to-electrical conversion efficiency of 1.42% at AM 1.5G 1sun light illumination, while 1.86% efficiency is observed when the ESD deposition of P3HT/PCBM is performed on a spin-coated PEDOT:PSS layer.

  • In semiconductor devices, Cu has been used for the formation of multilevel metal interconnects by the damascene technique. Also lower dielectric constant materials is needed for the below 65 nm technology node. However, the low-k materials has porous structure and they can be easily damaged by high down pressure during conventional CMP. Also, Cu surface are vulnerable to have surface scratches by abrasive particles in CMP slurry. In order to overcome these technical difficulties in CMP, electro-chemical mechanical planarization (ECMP) has been introduced. ECMP uses abrasive free electrolyte, soft pad and low down-force. Especially, electrolyte is an important process factor in ECMP. The purpose of this study was to characterize KOH and $KNO_3$ based electrolytes on electro-chemical mechanical. planarization. Also, the effect of additives such as an organic acid and oxidizer on ECMP behavior was investigated. The removal rate and static etch rate were measured to evaluate the effect of electro chemical reaction.

  • Vibration, giving rise to acoustical noise, is an important index of motor performance. The unbalance force due to rotor eccentricity caused by manufacturing imprecision or bearing defects is one possible source of excitation to vibration. With the advent of new high-energy magnetic material together with high precision motor applications, magnetic sources of vibration are becoming more serious. This paper introduces two types of high-speed slotless permanent magnet (PM) machine for electro-mechanical battery and investigates unbalance force due to static eccentricity with finite element method.

  • In this study, we improved control performance of an EMV (electromechanical valve) system using a PM/EM (permanent magnet/electromagnet) hybrid EMA (electromagnetic actuator) and showed the feasibilities of both soft landing and fast transition of the EMV system using a simple PID control. The conventional EMV systems using only EM show significant nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, it is very difficult to control the valve position and several complex control schemes are used. This paper focused on the control performance improvement using a PM/EM hybrid actuator. In particular, a PM is used as a key design parameter such as a bias current of a magnetic bearing in order to improve the linear characteristic of the actuator, although most PM/EM hybrid actuators use a PM as a power saver during valve-open and -closed states. First, a FE (finite element) analysis was performed to confirm its linear static force characteristics. Then, both a test rig and a valve control system were built in order to prove experimentally the control performance improvement of the actuator. Finally, feasibilities of both soft landing and fast transition of the system were shown experimentally through gain-scheduled PID (proportional derivative integral) control.

  • This paper presents a characteristics of linear induction motor considering airgap variation for railway transit in order to achieve high performance of the vehicle. The operating principle of a LIM(Linear induction motor) is identical to a rotary induction motor. Space-time variant magnetic fields are generated by the primary part across the airgap and induce the electro-motive force(EMF) in the secondary part, a conducting sheet. This EMF generates the eddy currents, which interact with the airgap flux and so produce the thrust force known as Loren's force. Even though the operating principal is exactly same as a rotary motor, the linear motor has a finite length of the primary or secondary parts and it causes static and dynamic end-effect which is the discontinuous airgap flux phenomenon. This end-effect causes the deterioration of the system performance, especially in high-speed operation. Another problem is that construction tolerance restricts the minimum airgap in order to prevent a collision between the primary part and the secondary reaction plate. More over, as the airgap length is getting smaller, the attraction force between the primary part and secondary parts is getting larger dramatically and the attraction force would be another friction against propulsion. Therefore, it is necessary to figure out the characteristics of linear induction motor considering airgap variation in order to achieve high performance of the vehicle. The dynamic model of LIM taking into account end-effects is derived. Then the modified mechanical load equation considering the effect of the attraction and thrust force according to the airgap variation is analyzed. The simulation results are presented to show the effect of the LIM according to the airgap variation.

  • As a main part of an utility helicopter, the APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has a solenoid valve system operated with a torque motor, which controls the flow rate in the fuel supply system. In this paper, we solved the Maxwell potential equations to analyze the electromagnetic force in the torque motor, and some additional analytic methods are used to compute the quantity of torque produced by the torque motor for the given circuit current. For the convenience, small displacement is assumed, and only magneto-static problem is considered for the two-dimensional cross section. The result will be compared with the three-dimensional analysis that will be studied in the near future.
