  • A mathematical model and dynamic characteristics ova continuously variable damper for semi-active suspen- sion systems are investigated. After analyzing the geometry of a typical continuously variable damper, mathematical models fur individual components including piston, orifices, spring, and valves are first derived and then the flow equations for extension and compression strokes are investigated. To verify the developed mathematical model, the dynamic response of the model are simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK and are compared with experimental results. The proposed model can be used not only for mechanical components design but also for control system design.

  • Hydraulic actuator and electro-magnetic liner actuator have been used as typical active vibration control methods. However these methods have many kinds of disadvantages such as causing space limit, difficult maintenance, complicate structures, etc. The purpose of this paper was to study on the possibility of active vibration control using piezoelectric transducer. Piezoelectric transducer generated a vibration and GIC (General Impedance Converter) amplifier was adopted to give adjustable vibration signal to transducer and high amplitude of vibration. Resonance frequency of piezoelectric transducer was controlled by GIC amplifier and higher amplitude of vibration was achieved. Finally active vibration control using piezoelectric transducer was performed.

  • EHA (Electro-Hydrostatic Actuator) is more energy efficiency than a centralized hydraulic system. In particular, the EHA used for aircraft has a redundant design in preparation for failure scenario. Also, due to the aircraft's internal space limitation, the actuator's length must be optimized. Therefore, a series configuration of double rod and single rod cylinder is advantageous. However, due to the asymmetry of the cross-sectional area of the piston, the force fighting phenomenon between the two cylinder areas occurs during redundant operation with a general control system. In this paper, the force fighting phenomenon of redundant EHA was simulated. A controller with load compensation and a force control-based position controller as a method to suppress its stimulation

  • In this study, the nitrate removal efficiency was examined under a variety of operating conditions, such as different doses of the reducing agent, different electrode types, different HRTs(hydraulic retention times), and different current densities, using the multistep electrochemical process. The nitrate removal efficiency increased and the input energy decreased when the reducing agent was used, and almost no difference was found between the electrode types in terms of their nitrate removal efficiency and current efficiency. So that the Zn reducing agent could be recovered, though, the B-type electrode was chosen(step 1: Pt-Zn; step 2: Pt-Zn; step 3: Pt-Zn; step 4: Pt-Zn). HRT experiments were carried out on constant electric current density unrelated HRTs and various electric current density related HRTs: the constant amount of electric current per unit volume. As a result, HRT and the electric current density caused concentration polarization and the lack of an applied current. That is to say,the lower the HRT, the greater the decrease in concentration polarization and in the amount of applied current per unit volume. Therefore, optimal conditions were found through the experiments that were conducted on HRT and electric current density. When a spacer was installed in the process, the nitrate removal efficiency and energy efficiency increased even more because the diffusion likewise increased.

  • Electro-hydraulic sliding deck systems have been developed to reduce the weight for the loading of an agricultural machine. The extension length of the sliding deck was calculated according to the bed's dump angle. The optimum thickness and material were determined using a large and heavy load at acceptable angles. In addition, the degrees of freedom were calculated to obtain the input/output relationship of the system. An equation was derived using a simplified model formula for the extended length of the sliding deck according to the bed's dump angle. Also, the advance length at the maximum and minimum angles of the system was determined using numerical analysis. A down-scaled model of the system was constructed and verified by experiments. The deck was simplified to determine the material and thickness of the sliding deck and for the selection of the two representative materials. The simplified model was tested in deformation tests and stress tests with different thicknesses and materials using a structure analysis program. The analysis results show that ATOS80 is the best among the two materials for reducing the weight of the system.

  • This paper experimentally investigates the steady shear behaviors of electro-rheological(ER) fluids under flow mode at high pressure level. As for the ER fluid to be tested, two types of ER fluids are employed; water-based ER fluids (ERF 1, ERF 2) and water-free ER fluid(ERF 3). The water-based ER fluids are composed inhousingly, and the concentrations of dispersed particles are 20 wt% and 30 wt% for ERF 1 and ERF 2, respectively. To generate the flow mode at high pressure, an experimental apparatus operated by two-way hydraulic cylinder is constructed and utilized. The pressure difference is measured by the pressure sensor, while the flow rate is calculated using the measured data of the displacement sensor(LVDT). Consequently, the shear stress and shear rate are distilled by incorporating the measured data; the pressure difference and the flow rate.

  • In this paper, a study on the future-oriented actuator introduces the future technology and future direction in aerospace and several industry fields. In particular, the mechanical linkage or hydraulic and pneumatic actuators which have the higher output-to-weight ratio have been used a lot in the past as the aircraft's flight control device. Most recently, Fly-By-Wire system has been used in aircraft and the flight control system has been changed in more electric and all electric systems. Electrohydraulic actuators and electric actuators have been developed continually, because they have better efficiency, safety and lower cost for the flight control system of aircraft. Also, to improve the weight condition, accuracy and response of actuator, new field actuators using new materials have been developed. In this paper we clearly proposed the actuator design and detailed technology development trend for next generation actuation system in aerospace and new field.

  • Recently, controlled auto ignition(CAI) in gasoline engines are drawing more attentions due to its extremely low level of NOx emissions and potentials in lowering the fuel consumption rate. The one of the key techniques for realizing CAI combustion in engines is the control of valve system. Since the valve linkage system with higher complexity, or even earn-less valve systems, such as electro-hydraulic and electro-magnetic system, are adopted in CAI engines, it is not easy to estimate the valve lift profile from earn profiles. Therefore new measurement techniques for valve lift in CAI engines have been tried and tested. In this paper, hole type valve lift sensor was developed and tested to check the applicability in CAI engines. The valve lifts could be obtained from the sensor signal, which depends on the distance from the sensor to magnet attached to valve. Various engine speeds, ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 rpm, and valve lifts, maximum up to 9.7 mm, were tested. It was found that the sensor output for valve lift had accuracy of 98% in comparison with the basic specifications of valve lift through improvements of sensor driving circuit.

  • As worldwide concern stands on global warming and greenhouse gases from internal combustion engine, the interests in technologies for a highly efficient powertrain has been increased. Concurrently the investigation to improve the deteriorated NVH, a by-product of energy efficient powertrain, is conducted seriously. The NVH performance of a new type of active engine mount that offers increased advantages over a passive hydraulic mount is examined using a newly developed 6-DOF simulator. The simulator is in the shape of Hexapod Stewart Platform adopting LEMA, a new type of actuator which is patented and commercialized by ACT Inc,, the world wide leader in the design, development, and manufacture of high performance linear electro-magnetic actuators for active vibration control. The target vibration signals of an aimed vehicle at four engine mounts are measured and simulated by 6-DOF simulator at the laboratory. The resulting NVH performances of the new active mounting system at a vehicle and on a simulator are examined and compared. Even though the active mount performance of lab test demonstrates less effective than the result of a real vehicle test, vibration reduction is identified through the simulator.

  • This paper resents a novel cargo system adapted for a sea port subjected to severe time-varying tide. The proposed system can perform loading or unloading by using a sort of hydraulic elevator associated with real-tim position control. As a preliminary phase, a small-sized model of the cargo system is designed and constructed. The model consists of three principal components ; container palette transfer(CPT) car, platform with lifting columns and cargo ship. The platform activated by the electro-rheological(ER) valve-cylinder is actively controlled to track the position of the cargo ship subjected to be varied due to the time-varying tide and wave motion. Following the derivation of the dynamic model for the platform and cargo ship motions, an appropriate control scheme incorporating time sequence and PID(proportional-integral-derivative) controller is formulated and implemented. Both the simulated and the measured control results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed cargo system.
