  • Electro-active polymer (EAP), one of the smart materials, is a new alternative offering ultra-precise movements and bio-compatibility. We present the results of the design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of a fabricated diaphragm-type polymer actuator using segmented polyurethane(SPU). This paper illustrates the relationship between the elastic modulus and maximum deflection as a key property of the Maxwell stress effect and also presents the relationship between the dielectric constant and maximum deflection as a key property of the electrostriction effect, especially in polymer actuators using SPU. A diaphragm-type actuator was used to induce an equation of the vertically distributed load by using a fully clamped circular plate as the boundary condition. To verify the equation, the results were compared to the data measured from load cell. In the near future, a low-cost check valves and bio-robot can be applied by its actuators.

  • Specialized propulsors for naval applications have numerous opportunities in terms of research, design and fabrication of an appropriate propulsor. One of the most important components of any propulsor is the actuator that provides the mode of locomotion. Ionomeric electro-active polymer may offer an attractive solution for locomotion of small propulsors. A common ionomeric electro-active polymer, ionic Polymer-Metal Composites (IPHCs) give large true bending deformations under low driving voltages, operate in aqueous environments, are capable of transduction and are relatively well understood. IPMC fabrication and operation are presented to further elucidate the use of the material for a propulsor. Various materials, including IPMCs, are investigated and a simplified propulsor model is explored.

  • 연구는 electro-active polymer(EAP)의 특성을 가지는 ion-exchange polymer metal composite(IPMC)을 이용하여 지능형 대장내시경 개발에 목적을 두고 있다. IPMC는 낮은 구동전압과 빠른 반응속도로 인하여 매우 매력적인 물질이다. 본 연구에서는 IPMC구동기의 전극을 무전의 도금 방법을 이용하여 용액함침-환원방법(impregnation-reduction method)으로 제조하였으며 코팅된 백금전극의 횟수에 따라 변위와 변화를 측정하였다. 구동특성을 알아보기 위하여 길이, 주파수에 대한 변위, 힘을 측정하였으며, 주파수 대역은 저주파 대역과 공명주파수 대역을 사용하는 것이 적합하다는 결론을 얻었다. 또한 다양한 구동적 특성과 수분의 함량에 따른 영향에 대해 고전적 적층 이론 (classical laminate theory, CLT)을 이용하여 이방성 IPMC의 응력분포와 수분이동에 따른 모멘트, 변형률, 곡률(cuvature)을 모델링 하였다.

폴리아닐린이 코팅된 Electro-Active Paper 작동기 성능평가 (Performance Characterization of Polyaniline Coated Electro-Active Paper Actuator)

  • Bending actuators composed of cellulose with an electrically conducting polymer (CP) are fabricated and their performance is characterized in the air. Two different counter ions, perchlorate and tetrafluoroborate are used as dopant ions in the polyaniline CP processing. CP-cellulose-CP trilayer and CP-cellulose bilayer samples are fabricated with different dopant ions, and their actuation performance is evaluated in terms of tip displacement, blocked force and electrical power consumption along with the humidity level and actuation frequency. The trilayer samples substantially enhanced the tip displacement compared to the bilayer ones. The actuation performance of the trilayer actuator is three times better than that of original cellulose electro-active paper (EAPap) actuator. The displacement and blocked force of CP-EAPap actuators are dependent on the humidity and frequency.

  • Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.

  • In case of environment requiring safety such as human body and requiring flexible shape, a conventional mechanical actuator system does not satisfy requirements. Therefore, in order to solve these problems. a research of various smart material such as EAP (Electro Active Polymer), EAC (Electro Active Ceramic) and SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) is in progress. Recently, the highest preferring material among various smart material is EP (Electrostictive Polymer), because it has very fast response time, powerful force and large displacement. The previous researches have been studied properties of polymer and simple control, but present researches are studied a polymer actuator. An EP (Electostrictive Polymer) actuator has properties which change variably ils shape and environmental condition. Therefore, in order to coincide with a user's purpose, it is important not only to decide a shape of actuator and mechanical design but also to investigate a efficient controller. In this paper, we constructed the control logic with an adaptive fuzzy algorithm which depends on the physical properties of EP that has a dielectric constant depending on time. It caused for a sub-actuator to operate at the same time that a sub-actuator system operation increase with a functional improvement and control efficiency improvement in each actuator, hence it becomes very important to manage it effectively and to control the sub-system which Is operated effectively. There is a limitation on the management of Main-host system which has multiple sub-system, hence it brings out the Multi-Vehicle Control process that disperse the task efficiently. Controlling the multi-dispersion system efficiently, it needs the research of Main-host system's scheduling, data interchange between sub-actuators, data interchange between Main-host system and sub-actuator system, and data communication process. Therefore in this papers, we compared the fuzzy controller with the adaptive fuzzy controller. also, we applied the scheduling method for efficient multi-control in EP Actuator and the algorithm with interchanging data, protocol design.

Study on Electro-Mechanical Coupling Effect of EAPap Actuator

  • In this paper, electro-mechanical coupling of cellulose-based Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) actuator is investigated by measuring induced strain and mechanical properties with and without electric excitation. The maximum induced in-plane strain is measured at the orientation angle of 45? samples. The elastic modulus and strength of EAPap are increased with electric excitation and the orientation angle of $45^{\circ}$ samples shows the largest increment of mechanical properties. From the observations, shear piezoelectricity is considered as the major piezoelectric mode of EAPap.

  • 본 논문에서 연구하고자 하는 IPMC(Ionic exchange Polymer Metal Composite)는 술폰산 이온기와 플루오르화 탄소의 결합으로 이루어진 Nafion 필름을 사용한 소재로 전기 활성 고분자(Electro Active Polymer) 특성과 물의 유무 및 양이온에 크게 영향을 받는 특성을 지닌다. 즉, 전기 에너지를 기계적 에너지로 활용 하거나, 기계 에너지를 전기 에너지로 활용 할 수 있으며, 물과 물속의 양이온에 따라 그 특성도 크게 달라진다. 이러한 IPMC의 전기적 특성을 연구하기 위하여 모의실험 장치를 구성하였다. 이 모의 실험 장치에는 MCU 와 Stepper Motor를 사용 하여 해류의 기계적 움직임을 구현 하도록 하여 움직임에 따른 전기적 특성 분석을 하도록 설계 하였다. 본 연구에서는 IPMC와 모의실험 장치를 구성 하여 해류 에너지의 효율 적인 사용을 위하여 IPMC의 면적, 주파수, 염분의 농도, Bending 각도에 따른 전기적 분석 연구 방법을 통해 IPMC의 효율적인 사용 방법을 제안하고자 한다.

필름형 유연 시-촉각 융합 디스플레이 (Flexible Visuo-haptic Display)

  • This paper describes a flexible visuo-haptic display module. We have developed a flexible electro-active polymer (EAP) actuator and a thin flexible visual display with $3{\times}3$ array configuration via polymer technology. The flexible actuator consists of nine EAP cells vertically moving in response to change in their thickness. The flexible display uses polymer based optical waveguide allowing light to scatter only at specific area. The display film is transparent and identically designed to the array pattern to fit for the arrangement of actuator cells. A pressure sensor is installed under the integrated module. The performance of the actuator is proved to be sufficient for satisfying perceivable range of human touch sense. The integrated system can provide interactive haptic feedback such as key pressing, contact vibration sensations, and etc. in accordance with user input.
