  • Recently, lack of power reserve margin was observed quite often. In this paper, we studied the method to secure power source for a short time, to cut the utility power peak load, and to reduce the users electricity bills. Emergency diesel generator of an office building is to be converted into a dual-fuel engine generator which is responsible for a portion of the peak load. Compared to the conventional diesel fuel generator, the proposed dual-fuel engine is able to reduce the generation power cost by dual-fuel combustion, and it also mitigates the building's utility power peak load by charging the building's peak load. If the dead resources (a group of emergency dual-fuel engine generators), as a Virtual Power Plant, are operating in peak time, we can significantly reduce future large power development costs. We investigated the current general purpose electricity bills as well as the records of the building electric power usage, and calculated diesel engine generator renovation costs, generation fuel costs, driving conditions, and savings in electricity bills. The proposed dual-fuel engine generation method reduces 18.1% of utility power peak load, and turned out to be highly attractive investment alternative which shows more than 27% of IRR, 76 million won of NPV, and 20~53 months of payback periods. The results of this study are expected to be useful to developing the policy & strategy of the energy department.

  • Hydrogen and electricity are expected to dominate the world energy system in the long term. The world currently consumes about 50 million metric tons of hydrogen per year, with the bulk of it being consumed by the chemical and refining industries. The demand for hydrogen is expected to increase, especially if the U.S. and other countries shift their energy usage towards a hydrogen economy, with hydrogen consumed as an energy commodity by the transportation, residential and commercial sectors. However, there is strong motivation to not use fossil fuels in the future as a feedstock for hydrogen production, because the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is a byproduct and fossil fuel prices are expected to increase significantly. An advanced reactor technology receiving considerable international interest for both electricity and hydrogen production, is the modular helium reactor (MHR), which is a passively safe concept that has evolved from earlier high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) designs. For hydrogen production, this concept is referred to as the H2-MHR. Two different hydrogen production technologies are being investigated for the H2-MHR; an advanced sulfur-iodine (SI) thermochemical water splitting process and high-temperature electrolysis (HTE). This paper describes pre-conceptual design descriptions and economic evaluations of full-scale, nth-of-a-kind SI-Based and HTE-Based H2-MHR plants. Hydrogen production costs for both types of plants are estimated to be approximately $2 per kilogram.

  • This paper uses research on the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) in South Korea to conduct a simulation analysis on the impact of nuclear power dependency and usage rates on the social costs of power generation. We compare the $7^{th}$ basic plan for long-term electricity supply and demand, which was designed to increase nuclear power generation, to the $8^{th}$ basic plan for long-term electricity supply and demand that decreased nuclear power generation and increased renewable energy generation in order to estimate changes in social costs and electricity rates according to the power generation mix. Our environmental generation mix simulation results indicate that social costs may increase by 22% within 10 years while direct generation cost and electricity rates based on generation and other production costs may increase by as much as 22% and 18%, respectively. Thus we confirm that the power generation mix from the $8^{th}$ basic plan for long-term electricity supply and demand compared to the $7^{th}$ plan increases social costs of generation, which include environmental external costs.

  • For the sake of a stable power supply, an electric power company must have power generation facilities that can generate more electricity than the maximum demand of the year. Due to the fact that the maximum electricity demand will also continue to increase, enormous investments are needed annually to build power plants. For that reason, electric power companies are propelling 'Demand Side Management' which improve the form of electrical usage for the customer in a positive way. This paper presents the concept of 'Cool Storage System' which is the most representative program, which lowers the peak demand during the on-peak time periods in a day and creates a base load simultaneously during the night time hours among the DSM programs.

  • Recently, all-electrified houses have constructed and some tasks are being carried out to monitor energy consumption patterns. The energy monitoring includes various elements such as temperature, pressure, water flow, $CO_2$, and electricity. In this monitoring, electricity consumption is one of the essential factors because the performance and energy saving levels are described by this physical quantity. This quantity depends on materials, structure, operation of the house, which operation means consumer's life style and usage patterns of home appliances furthermore. Firstly, this paper shows a control simulation method which were developed a few years ago. And some different methods are proposed considering flexible experimental condition.

  • Building energy use estimation relies on building characteristics, its energy systems, occupants, and weather. Energy estimation of new buildings is considerably an easy task when compared to modeling existing buildings as they require calibration with actual data. Particularly, when energy estimation of existing building stock is warranted at a city-scale, the problem is exacerbated owing to lack of construction drawings and other engineering specifications. However, as collection of buildings and other infrastructure constitute cities, such predictions are a necessary component of developing and maintaining sustainable cities. This paper uses Artificial Neural Network techniques to predict electricity consumption for residential buildings situated in the City of Gainesville, Florida. With the use of 32,813 samples of data vectors that comprise of building floor area, built year, number of stories, and range of monthly energy consumption, this paper extends the prediction to environmental impact assessment of electricity usage at the urban-scale. Among others, one of the applications of the proposed model discussed in this paper is the study of urban scale Life Cycle Assessment, and other decisions related to creating sustainable cities.

  • Power efficiency management in smart farms is important due to its link to climate change. As climate change negatively impacts agriculture, future agriculture is expected to utilize smart farms to minimize climate impacts, but smart farms' power consumption may exacerbate the climate crisis due to the current electricity production system. Therefore, it is essential to efficiently manage and optimize the power usage of smart farms. In this study, we propose a system that monitors the power usage of smart farm equipment in real time and predicts the power usage one hour later using GRU. CT sensors are installed to collect power usage data, which are analyzed to detect and prevent abnormal patterns, and combined with IoT technology to efficiently manage and monitor the overall power usage. This helps to optimize power usage, improve energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions. The system is expected to improve not only the energy management of smart farms, but also the overall efficiency of energy use.

  • In this paper, an augmented refrigerator is proposed that presents information to increase the awareness of electric power consumption of a household fridge. The key idea is to reflect wasteful behavior on the feedback to a user, rather than mere amount of consumption or duration of opening a door of a fridge.

  • At present, In korea one of big characteristics in electricity power market is unique seller but in the near future competitions are expected in the market. Another big trend is development of IT technology. Through IT, remote inspection for power usage are possible. So huge power consumer like KORAIL it is necessary to investigate power consumption pattern. This paper presents load consumption pattern for representative substation and billing system database program. Base on the substation annual power usage data, the characteristic of the substation power consumption are investigated and effective electrical billing system are compared each other.
