  • Hydrogen energy is emphasized as a substitutable energy of carbon-based energy system in the future, since it is non-depletable and clean energy. Long term vision of Korean government on the national energy system is to promote hydrogen energy by 15% of final energy demand until 2040. This study analyzes economic impacts of hydrogen energy development employing a dynamic CGE model for Korea. Frontier technology such as hydrogen energy is featured as slow diffusion at the initial stage due to the learning effect and energy complementarity. Without government intervention, hydrogen energy would be produced upto 6.5% of final energy demand until 2040. However, if government subsidizes sales price of hydrogen energy by 10%, 20%, and 30%, share of hydrogen energy would increase 9.2%, 15.2%, and 37.7% of final energy demand. This result shows that the slow diffusion problem of hydrogen energy as frontier technology could be figured out by market incentive policy. On the other hand, production levels of transportation sector would increase while growth rate of oil and electricity sectors would decline. Household consumption would be affected negatively since increase of consumption due to the price decrease would be overwhelmed by income reduction owing to the increase of tax. Overall, GDP would not decrease or increase significantly since total production, investment, and export would increase even if household consumption declines.

  • Due to climate change, water shortages and water-related disasters will be serious. Since the damage and frequency of drought are increasing, the importance of water resource management technology is increasing. In this study, we analyzed the amount of greenhouse gas and the environmental impact caused by the production and operation system technologies of movable weir among various water resource management technologies. The research subjects were air inflatable rubber dams widely used in rivers and upright type rubber dams, which are an improvement on the existing rubber type. Each type of dam was studied at sizes of $1,500H{\times}10,000L\;mm$ and $3,000H{\times}20,000L\;mm$, and the two types and two sizes were compared and analyzed. Using life cycle assessment, we examined the environmental impacts using the amount of electricity required for operation and the discretionary amount required for production. In the '$1,500H{\times}10,000L$' dams, the global warming indexes were $9.35E+04kg\;CO_2-eq$. for upright type and $7.36E+04kg\;CO_2-eq$. for inflatable type. At size of '$3,000H{\times}20,000L$' the global warming indexes were $9.09E+05kg\;CO_2-eq$. for upright type and $1.07E+06kg\;CO_2-eq$. for inflatable type. Analysis of the life cycle environmental impact showed that the environmental impact of the air inflatable rubber dam was reduced by 39.8% at '$1,500H{\times}10,000L$' compared to the larger size. At the larger '$3,000H{\times}20,000L$' size, the upright dam showed a 10.1% smaller impact than the air inflatable rubber dam. Selection of water resource management system should consider climate change, not only management purpose and cost. Additional studies and improvements on rubber dam systems should be made.

  • The regional economy growth of Jeju has seen higher than national growth since 2011 by the establishment of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the increase of incoming population, but its economic growth has slowed after 2016. This study conducted the dynamic shift-share analysis using the production and employees of each industry from 2010 to 2016, targeting Jeju with many factors of regional economic change. In the results of empirical analysis, the regional economy of Jeju was not the industrial structure depending on the national growth, but the industrial structure by the competitiveness and industrial structure of Jeju region. The industries having positive(+) effects of industrial mix effect and competitive effect on the production and the number of employees were the electricity/gas/heavy equipments & waterworks, construction, accommodation & restaurants, and service industry. These industries have positive effects on the regional industry of Jeju. The above-mentioned industries are not only more likely to grow than other regions, but also to drive the local economy of Jeju. In order for these industries to continuously contribute to the regional economy of Jeju, it would be necessary to have the policy/institutional support in the long-term perspective.

  • BACKGROUND: Many strawberry growers are utilizing daylength extension by using incandescent bulb or fluorescent lamp to break dormancy of strawberry induced by low temperature and short day conditions. Conventional incandescent bulb and fluorescent lamp consume a lot of electricity and have short longevity. Red light known for most efficient wavelength for daylength extension light of short-day plant and long-day plant. This study was conducted to verify the effects of red light to enhance growth and to increase production of strawberry (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa Duch. cvs. "Seolhyang") METHODS AND RESULTS: Three red light (660nm) of 0.70, 0.87, and $1.05{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ (PAR) and conventional incandescent bulb of 40 Lux were treated respectively under the pot experiment. All treatment irradiated from 18:00 to 24:00 for 6 hours. Red light treatment tend to increase leaf stem number, flower stem number, weight of flower stem, crown weight, root weight, and leaf area of strawberry then incandescent bulb treatment. In field experiment, red light of $0.7{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ (PAR) and conventional incandescent bulb of 40 Lux were irradiated respectively. Field experiment showed that the leaf number, leaf weight, and crown weight of strawberry increased than those of incandescent bulb control with red LED of $0.7{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ (PAR). Red LED treatment increased the fruit number over 15g than incandescent bulb. Furthermore, red LED treatment decreased fruit number below 15g of strawberry than incandescent bulb treatment. Therefore, We believed that red LED treatment increased marketable fruit number by increment of weight of each fruit. Consequently, marketable fruit number, fruit weight, and fruit production of strawberry were increased than those of incandescent bulb by 5 %, 2.9 %, and 8.5 % respectively, but not showed significantly differences. CONCLUSION: These results presumably due to directly enhanced photosynthesis of strawberry leaves and activated action of Pfr phytochrome form by red light. In conclusion, red LED of 660nm could be used for daylength extension light source to enhance production of strawberry.

  • As part of a feasibility study for introducing carbon labeling of fruit products in Korea, we explore the use of carbon footprints for Korean kiwifruit from Gyeongnam region as a case study. In Korea, the Korean Environmental Industry and Technology Institute (KEITI) is responsible for the carbon footprint labeling certification, and has two types of certification programs: one program focuses on climate change response (carbon footprint labeling analysis) and the other on low-carbon products (reduction of carbon footprints analysis). Currently agricultural products have not yet been included in the program. Carbon labeling could soon be a prerequisite for the international trading of agricultural products. In general the carbon footprints of various agricultural products from New Zealand followed the methodology described in the ISO standards and conformed to the PAS 2050. The carbon footprint assessment focuses on a supply chain, and considers the foreground and the background systems. The basic scheme consists of four phases, which are the 'goal', 'scope', 'inventory analysis', and 'interpretation' phases. In the case of the carbon footprint of New Zealand kiwifruit the study tried to understand each phase's contribution to total GHG emissions. According to the results, shipping, orchard, and coolstore operation are the main life cycle stages that contribute to the carbon footprint of the kiwifruit supply chain stretching from the orchard in New Zealand to the consumer in the UK. The carbon emission of long-distance transportation such as shipping can be a hot-spot of GHG emissions, but can be balanced out by minimizing the carbon footprint of other life cycle phases. For this reason it is important that orchard and coolstore operations reduce the GHG-intensive inputs such as fuel or electricity to minimize GHG emissions and consequently facilitate the industry to compete in international markets. The carbon footprint labeling guided by international standards should be introduced for fruit products in Korea as soon as possible. The already established LCA methodology of NZ kiwifruit can be applied for fruit products as a case study.

  • The study attempted to estimate the optimal facility capacity by combining renewable energy sources that can be connected with gas CHP in industrial complexes. In particular, we reviewed industrial complexes subject to energy use plan from 2013 to 2016. Although the regional designation was excluded, Sejong industrial complex, which has a fuel usage of 38 thousand TOE annually and a high heat density of $92.6Gcal/km^2{\cdot}h$, was selected for research. And we analyzed the optimal operation model of CHP Hybrid System linking fuel cell and photovoltaic power generation using HOMER Pro, a renewable energy hybrid system economic analysis program. In addition, in order to improve the reliability of the research by analyzing not only the heat demand but also the heat demand patterns for the dominant sectors in the thermal energy, the main supply energy source of CHP, the economic benefits were added to compare the relative benefits. As a result, the total indirect heat demand of Sejong industrial complex under construction was 378,282 Gcal per year, of which paper industry accounted for 77.7%, which is 293,754 Gcal per year. For the entire industrial complex indirect heat demand, a single CHP has an optimal capacity of 30,000 kW. In this case, CHP shares 275,707 Gcal and 72.8% of heat production, while peak load boiler PLB shares 103,240 Gcal and 27.2%. In the CHP, fuel cell, and photovoltaic combinations, the optimum capacity is 30,000 kW, 5,000 kW, and 1,980 kW, respectively. At this time, CHP shared 275,940 Gcal, 72.8%, fuel cell 12,390 Gcal, 3.3%, and PLB 90,620 Gcal, 23.9%. The CHP capacity was not reduced because an uneconomical alternative was found that required excessive operation of the PLB for insufficient heat production resulting from the CHP capacity reduction. On the other hand, in terms of indirect heat demand for the paper industry, which is the dominant industry, the optimal capacity of CHP, fuel cell, and photovoltaic combination is 25,000 kW, 5,000 kW, and 2,000 kW. The heat production was analyzed to be CHP 225,053 Gcal, 76.5%, fuel cell 11,215 Gcal, 3.8%, PLB 58,012 Gcal, 19.7%. However, the economic analysis results of the current electricity market and gas market confirm that the return on investment is impossible. However, we confirmed that the CHP Hybrid System, which combines CHP, fuel cell, and solar power, can improve management conditions of about KRW 9.3 billion annually for a single CHP system.

  • In this study, life cycle assessment (LCA) on one of corrugated cardboard box as functional unit was carried out. System boundary of this study divided according to raw material acquisition, corrugated cardboard manufacture and corrugated cardboard box manufacture stage. And environmental impacts are evaluated on each stage and sub-process. The impact categories are classified into eight categories of abiotic resource depletion, global warming stratospheric ozone depletion, photochemical oxidant creation, air acidification, eutrophication, ecotoxicity and human toxicity. From the results, it is found that environment impacts at raw material acquisition stage is the highest as about 92% of whole stage due to liner board manufacture stage. The highest environmental impacts at sub-process of corrugated cardboard and box manufacture stage is a single facer and D/W backer process that included as main process in corrugated cardboard manufacture, and is caused by used energies like electricity, B-C oil, and etc. And then diagnosis for clean production process system of package is carried out. Through diagnosis, on loss rate is reduced and inner pressure intensity of box is improved. After improvement, environmental impact was decreased about 3.8% compared with before improvement.

  • The interest in renewable energy which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions has risen in the world including Korea. In Korea, solar energy generation accounts for a major percentage of electricity production using renewable energy and the solar power plants have been increasingly installed in Korea. The problem is, however, that researches on the location selection of solar power plants are unreasonably insufficient although the photovoltaic technology of the domestic solar power plants has been evolving. Thus, advanced solar energy technology could not be fully used. What is more, the indiscriminate installation of the solar power plants seriously damages the nature environment. In this study, conditions of the power plants location are analyzed in consideration of the social, cultural, environmental, economic factors and the optimum location is selected by visualizing and weighing various factors through the analytic hierarchy process. This study shows that the problem caused by the indiscriminate installation of a solar power plant could be prevented by determining the location after considering the influence of several factors. This paper would be helpful not only for the selection of location for solar plant installation in progress, but also for taking follow-up measures on the existing solar power plants placed wrongly.

  • Greenhouse gas reduction will be highlighted as the most pending question in the cement industry in future because the production of Portland cement not only consumes limestone, clay, coal, and electricity, but also release waste gases such as $CO_2,\;SO_3$, and NOX, which can contribute to the greenhouse effect and acid rain. To meet the increase of cement demand and simultaneously comply with the Kyoto Protocol, cement that gives less $CO_2$ discharge should be urgently developed. This study aims to manufacture non-sintering cement(NSC) by adding phosphogypsum(PG) and waste lime(WL) to granulated blast furnace slag(GBFS) as sulfate and alkali activators. This study also Investigates the hydration reaction of NSC through analysis of scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), differential thermal analysis(DTA), and pH. Results obtained from analysis of the hydrate have shown that the glassy films of GBFS are destroyed by the activation of alkali and sulfate, ions eluted from the inside of GBFS react with PG and produce ettringite, and consequently the remaining component in GBFS slowly produced C-5-H(I) gel. Here, PG is considered not only to play the role of simple activator, but also to work as a binder reacting with GBFS.

  • A set of surveys was performed at Chungchongbuk-Do in 1997 in order to analyze energy related in rice production. Four cases in rice farming were surveyed : traditional farming, no chemical farming, duck farming, mud snail farming. The farmer in traditional fanning has used chemical fertilizers and chemicals such as general farmers. The farmer in no chemical farming has used chemical fertilizers and manure but has not use chemicals. The farmer in duck farming has not used chemical fertilizers and chemicals but brought up duck in paddy. The farmer in mud snail has not used chemical fertilizers and chemicals but brought up mud snail in paddy. The animals n paddy as like duck and mud snail not only eat weeds and insect but also input fertile material by excretion. The results of energy analysis are as follows 1. In view of energy, the duck farming was the most efficient of four cases. The mud snail farming was less efficient than the duck farming, the traditional farming was less efficient than the mud snail farming, the na chemical farming was less efiicierrt than the traditional farming. 2. Relatively to amount of product, non renewable energy was used more in traditional farming than other cases and renewable energy was used more in no chemical farming than other cases. 3. The reason of low energy efficiency in the no chemical farming was to input fertilizers and manure so much. So to input nutrients excessively in order not to use chemicals can make rice farming to be inefficient in a view of energy. 4. The farming to bring up animals in paddy was more sustainable than other cases because input of non renewable energy could be decreased. But in order to make it to be more sustainable, should be developed cultivation method to decrease input of non renewable direct energy such as fossil fuel and electricity .
