Polypyrrole (PPy) was coated sequentially by chemical and electrochemical methods on a woven fabric, giving rise to a fabric having high electrical conductivity. We investigated the effects of the preparation conditions on the various properties of the resulting fabric. The PPy-coated fabric with optimum properties was obtained when it was prepared sequentially by chemical polymerization at the elevated temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$ under a pressure of 0.9 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and then electrochemical polymerization with a 3.06 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ current density at 25 $^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs with the separator plate. The surface resistivity of the resulting fabric was as low as 5 Ω/$\square$ .The PPy-coated fabric prepared under the optimum conditions showed practically applicable heat generating property. When electrical power was supplied to the fabric using a commercial battery for a mobile phone (3.6 V, LGLl-AHM), the temperature of the fabric increased very quickly from room temperature to ca. 55 $^{\circ}C$ within 2 min and was maintained for ca. 80 min at that temperature. The heat generating property of the fabric was extremely stable, exhibiting similar behavior over 10 repeated cycles. Therefore, we suggest that the PPy-coated fabric in this study may be practically useful for many applications, including flexible, portable surface-heating elements for medical or other applications.
Magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) is a new medical imaging modality providing cross-sectional images of a conductivity distribution inside an electrically conducting object. MREIT has rapidly progressed in its theory, algorithm and experimental technique and now reached the stage of in vivo animal and human experiments. Conductivity image reconstructions in MREIT require various steps of carefully implemented numerical computations. To facilitate MREIT research, there is a pressing need for an MREIT software package with an efficient user interface. In this paper, we present an example of such a software, called CoReHA which stands for conductivity reconstructor using harmonic algorithms. It offers various computational tools including preprocessing of MREIT data, identification of boundary geometry, electrode modeling, meshing and implementation of the finite element method. Conductivity image reconstruction methods based on the harmonic $B_z$ algorithm are used to produce cross-sectional conductivity images. After summarizing basics of MREIT theory and experimental method, we describe technical details of each data processing task for conductivity image reconstructions. We pay attention to pitfalls and cautions in their numerical implementations. The presented software will be useful to researchers in the field of MREIT for simulation as well as experimental studies.
As the old saying 'nothing is complete unless you put it in final shape', although nanosheets (NSs) are a promising functional building block for various electrochemical applications, their true value cannot be realized until they are well woven into electrical conducting materials. As an effort to determine their ideal shape, in this study, a unique manufacturing route to build a layer-by-layer (LBL) structure of two-dimensionally ordered, free-standing ${\beta}$-nickel hydroxide nanosheets (${\beta}$-NHNSs) that are fully electrically addressed with single-wall carbon nanotube fabrics was demonstrated, and its capabilities were verified through a comparative study on the differences between a simple bulky and LBL-structured electrochemical cathode, representing two extreme cases. The LBL-structured cathode showed a discharging current peak that was 25 times larger than the bulky structured one measured in cyclic voltammetry, which implies that the LBL structure is near an ideal electrode configuration for NS-based electrochemical applications.
A series of experiments were conducted to generate fine liquid(water) drops through the electrohydrodynamic atomization process. The atomization mode depended on flow rate and DC voltage input. For water, having electric conductivity larger than 10(sup)-7S/m, the spindle mode turned out to be the only mode to generate uniform-size drops within the range of 30-450 microns that have wide applications. Within this mode, both the uniformity and the fineness of drops were improved at an optimum voltage input for a given flow rate. This optimum voltage increased with increasing of the liquid flow rate. Another important parameter considered was the nozzle material with different electric conductivity and liquid wettability. A stainless-steel nozzle (the material with high electric conductivity and high liquid wettability) and a silica nozzle (the electrically non-conducting material with low liquid wettability) were tested and compared; and more uniform drops could be obtained with the silica nozzle.
In this study a numerical analysis has been conducted for the flow characteristics and pumping performance of a piezoelectric-based micropump with electromagnetic resistance exerted on electrically conducting fluid. Here, electromagnetic resistance is alternately applied at the inlet and outlet with alternately applied magnetic fields in association with the reciprocal membrane motion of the piezoelectric-based micropump. A model of Prescribed Deformation is used for the description of the membrane motion. The internal flow characteristics and pumping performance are investigated with the variation of magnetic flux density, tube size, displacement of membrane and the frequency of the membrane. It turns out that the current micropump has a wide range of pumping flow rate compared with diffuser-nozzle based micropumps.
There is great interest in developing magnetoresistance(MR) sensor, using ferromagnetic, electrically non-magnetic conducting and antiferromagnetic films, especially for the use in weak magnetic fields. Here, we report single and Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors made in Si(001)/NiO($300{\AA}$)/NiFe bilayers. Angular dependence of MR profiles was measured in Si(001)/NiO($300{\AA}$)/NiFe($450{\AA})$ films as a function of an angle between current and applied field direction, also, linearity was determined. AMR characteristics of single MR sensors was well explained with single domain model. Good linearity in $45^{\circ}$ Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors consisting of 4 single MR sensors made in Si(001)/NiO($300{\AA}$)/NiFe($450{\AA})$ was shown in the range of about ${\leq}{\pm}5$ Oe.
Radio Frequency (RF) coils in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems interact with a patient's tissues, resulting in the absorption of RF energy by the tissues. The presence of an electrically conducting medical implant may concentrate the RF energy and causes tissue heating near the implant devices. Here we present a novel design for a medical lead to reduce this undesired heating. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), an indicator of heating, was calculated. Remcom XFdtd software was used to calculate the peak SAR distribution (1g and 10 g) in a realistic model of the human body. The model contained a medical lead that was exposed to RF magnetic fields at 64 MHz (1.5 T MRI), 128 MHz (3 T MRI) and 300 MHz (7 T MRI) using a model of an MR birdcage body coil. Our results demonstrate that, our proposed design of adding nails to the medical lead can significantly reduce the SAR for different MRI systems.
An EM pump is used for the purpose of transporting the electrically conducting liquid sodium of the high temperature that is used as a coolant in the liquid metal reactor. In the present study, the pilot pump has been designed and manufactured for the high temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ by the equivalent circuit materials and the consideration of the materials and functions. The length and diameter of the pump are given as 84 cm and 10 cm each due to the fixed geometry of the circulation system to be installed. The characteristic of the developing pressure and efficiency is found out by using Laithewaite\`s standard design formula. It is shown that the developing pressure and efficiency are maximized at the frequency of 15 Hz from the curve. The annular channel gap of 3.95 mm is selected in the range of the reasonable hydraulic frictional loss. The components of the pump consist of the material for the high temperature. And then, the pump is manufactured to have the nominal flowrate of 40 1/min and developing Pressure of 1.3 bar.
Flow of electrically conducting nanofluids is of pivotal importance in countless industrial and medical appliances. Fluctuations in thermophysical properties of such fluids due to variations in temperature have not received due attention in the available literature. Present investigation aims to fill this void by analyzing the flow of copper-water nanofluid with temperature dependent viscosity past a Riga plate. Strong wall suction and viscous dissipation have also been taken into account. Numerical solutions for the resulting nonlinear system have been obtained. Results are presented in the graphical and tabular format in order to facilitate the physical analysis. An estimated expression for skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number are obtained by performing linear regression on numerical data for embedded parameters. Results indicate that the temperature dependent viscosity alters the velocity as well as the temperature of the nanofluid and is of considerable importance in the processes where high accuracy is desired. Addition of copper nanoparticles makes the momentum boundary layer thinner whereas viscosity parameter does not affect the boundary layer thickness. Moreover, the regression expressions indicate that magnitude of rate of change in effective skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number with respect to nanoparticles volume fraction is prominent when compared with the rate of change with variable viscosity parameter and modified Hartmann number.
