Effect of Tantalum and Lanthanum Addition on Electrochemical Property of Austenitic Stainless Steel in a Simulated PEMFC Environment

  • The electrochemical properties of W-modified austenitic stainless steels containing Ta and La were evaluated in a $H_{3}PO_{4}$ type PEMFC environment. Electrochemical test was conducted in 0.05 M $H_{3}PO_{4}$ solution at $80^{\circ}C$ and electrical property was conducted by contact resistance test. XPS was conducted to analyze the chemical elements consisting of passive film. Addition of La and Ta in W-modified austenitic stainless steel shows not only better corrosion resistance but also better electrical property.

  • Some nondestructive diagnostic methods including various types of corrosion sensors have been investigated. Under these conditions, a new structure of sensor that has a pair of electrode and magneto-supply was proposed. In order to detect the edge of the iron rust part, three-poles touch-type corrosion sensor is now proposed. The iron rust pattern where the sensor touches is estimated by means of the impedance of the sensor, and the edge of the iron rust is recognized by comparing the three measured impedances. As the result, our proposed sensor is useful to detect the initial state of iron rust.

  • We have been analyzed the interference problems already in steady state, especially AC corrosion when the gas pipeline is burred with power cable in the same submarine tunnel. In the next stage, we analyze the induced voltage in a fault condition of 154[kV] underground T/L. This paper presents the results of them which are limitation of safety voltage. meodeling of power cables, gas pipeline and grounding systems, analysis of induced voltage in a fault condition, and protection of Power line system.

  • Behavior of stoichiometric and near-stoichiometric NiAl at plasma spray deposition, without and with a bond coat, for coating layers realization on a low alloyed steel substrate, has been investigated. In all variants, NiAl particle melting and subsequent welding at the impact with substrate were observed, forming a relatively compact and adherent coating layer with the NiAl stability maintaining - all assuring the coating layer oxidation and corrosion resistance. Good results from these points of view, also validated through corrosion tests, were obtained for 45:55 Ni:Al composition without a bond coat but adopting an Ar protective surrounding of plasma jet.

  • The molten carbonate fuel cell has conspicuous feature and high potential in being used as an energy converter of various fuel to electricity and heat. However, the molten carbonate fuel cell which use strongly corrosive molten carbonate at $650^{\circ}C$ have many problem. One of the material problems is the severe corrosion of the metallic components, such as the separator. The effect of coating and annealing treatment on the corrosion for SUS 304 and SUS 430 which are the candidate materials for molten carbonate fuel cell hardware has been investigated in molten carbonate at $650^{\circ}C$ by using steady state polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the corrosion current of these SUS 304 and SUS 430 decreased with coating and annealing treatment.

  • Corrosion of metallic structures arises when an electric current flows from the metal into the electrolyte such as soil and water. The potential difference across the metal-electrolyte interface, the driving force for the corrosion current, can emerge due to a variety of temperature, pH, humidity and resistivity etc.. With respect to a given structure, a stray current is to be defined as a current flowing on a structure that is not part of the intended electrical circuit. Stray currents are caused by other cathodic protection installations, grounding systems and welding posts, referred to as steady state stray currents. But most often traction systems like railroads and tramlines are responsible for large dynamic stray currents. This type of stray current is generally results from the leakage of return currents from large DC traction systems that are grounded or have a bad earth-insulated return path. This paper investigates the reports, which is made for protecting the electrical corrosion by the DC traction stray current before the construction period.

  • Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of carbon steel gas pipeline in soil environments was investigated at field and laboratory MIC is very severe corrosion and it is not easy to distinguish this corrosion from Inorganic corrosion because of its localized, pitting-type character Therefore, it is important to provide proper assessment techniques for the prediction, detection, monitoring and mitigation of MIC. It is possible to predict the MIC risk, i.e., the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) through the analysis of soil environments. Chemical, microbiological and surface analysis of corrosion products and metal attacked could reveal the possibility of the occurrence of MIC. Various electrochemical and surface analysis techniques could be used for the study of MIC. Among these techniques, thin-film electrical resistance (ER) type sensors are promising to obtain localized corrosion rate of MIC induced by SRB. It is also important to study the effect of cathodic protection (CP) on the MIC In case of coated pipeline, the relationship between coating disbondment and the activity of SRB beneath the disbanded coating is also important.

  • The corrosion rate of buried steel pipes for water works was investigated under soil environment. Steel pipe shows various characteristics caused by complicated environment condition of underground and especially the corrosion rate of it depends on the resistivity of soil controlled by content of water. In this paper, the corrosion behavior of steel pipe was observed by polarization test under soil and the silica sand in the water content range of 0-50%. Generally it is well known that the resistivity of soil decreased rapidly over 15% water content. In fact the corrosion rate, corrosion potential, and corrosion consumption (MPY) of steel pipe were shown very different aspects within 20% water content.

  • The coated metallic bipolar plates are getting attractive due to their good feasibility of mass production, low contact resistance, high electrical/thermal conductivity, low gas permeability and good mechanical strength comparing with graphite materials. Yet, metallic bipolar plates for polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cells typically require coatings for corrosion protection. Other requirements for the corrosion protective coatings include low electrical contact resistance between metallic bipolar plate and gas diffusion layer, good mechanical robustness, low mechanical and fabrication cost. The authors have evaluated a number of protective coatings deposited on stainless steel substrate by electroplating. The coated metallic bipolar plates are investigated with an electrochemical polarization tests, salt dipping tests, adhesion tests for corrosion resistance and then the contact resistance was measured. The results showed that the selective samples electroplated with optimized method, satisfied the DOE target for corrosion resistance and contact resistance, and also were very stabilized in the typical fuel cell environments in the long-term.

Most often DC-powered traction systems like railroads and tramlines are responsible for large dynamic stray currents. This type of stray current is generally results from the leakage of return currents from large DC traction systems that are grounded or have a bad earth-insulated return path. At the place where the current leaves the rail and metallic structures, electrolytic corrosion may take place. This paper investigates the domestic conditions on the electrolytic corrosion protection of buried metallic structures adjacent to DC traction systems by survey.
