  • Partial discharges(PD) in air, corona discharges, deteriorate the insulation strength. So, it is necessary to detect PD at an early stage before the system failure and extensive damage to the equipment. PD emit signals which can be detected by applying an capacitive electric field diagnosis. In this paper, We measured signals by capacitive electric field sensor and analyzed FFT from PD, and then compared conventional electric PD detecting method to capacitive electric field diagnosis by $\Psi-q-n$, $\Psi-v-n$, $\Psi-n$, $\Psi-q$ distributions.

  • The present paper describes the slagging field data obtained with the one-dimensional process model for the 500 MW tangentially coal fired boiler in Korea. To obtain slagging field data in terms of thermal resistances [$m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C/kW$], a number of plant data were collected and analyzed with the one-dimensional modelling software at 500 MW full load. The slagging field data for the primary superheater were obtained for six coal blends, and compared with two TMA (Thermo-Mechanical analyzer) slagging indices and the numerical slagging index, along with the conventional slagging indices which were modified with the ash loading. The advanced two TMA indices for six blended coals give a good slagging tendency when comparing them with the slagging field data, while the modified conventional slagging indices give a relatively poor agreement.

  • The anomalous behaviour of animals prior to a large earthquake has been frequently reported from many places throughout the world since ancient times. This study is to experimentally testify what relations exist between the anomalous animal behavior and electric field effect, which is reported due to the piezo-electric effects in a basement rock before earthquake occurrences. We investigated the electric field effects on behaviors of two kinds of rats and birds. Rats show more sensitive anomalous behavior than birds. Even though the current applied to the experimental birds and rats is just a few ${\mu}$A, they show various abnormal behaviors. The anomalous animal behaviors under the small ground electric field may have some relations to the actual phenomena before great earthquake.

  • This paper deals with parameter tuning of the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) for 612 MVA thermal power plants in the KEPCO system and its validation in a field test. In this paper, the selection of parameters, such as lead-lag time constants for phase compensation and system gain, is optimized using linear and eigenvalue analyses. This is then verified through the time-domain transient stability analysis. In the next step, the performance of PSS is finally verified by the generator's on-line field test. After the field test, measured and simulated data are also compared to prove the effectiveness of the models used in the simulations.

  • A reflective interference type optical modulator to compose the electric field sensor is proposed, and the performance and characteristics are theoretically analyzed. For the high sensitivity of the sensor, a method to improve the modulation index of the modulator is presented. The electric field sensor using $Ti:LiNbO_3$ waveguide was fabricated and qualitatively investigated the characteristics by measuring the low frequency electric field. Even though the sensor showed very low modulation index of 5%, the electric filed strength of 5 V/cm was measured. The experimental results revealed the utilities of this type electric field sensor.

  • The relationships between discharge characteristics and sustain electrode shape are studied in AC PDP by calculating the electric field and measuring discharge voltage, luminance and current. The maximum electric field is obtained for the triangle shape electrode. It is 1.8 times larger than uniform electric field type. It has been shown thatthe firing voltage is largely affected by the degree of electric field concentration. But, as the difference of the maximum and minimum value of electric field in a cell increases, the luminance and luminance efficiency decrease. And, the charge variation during discharge is proportional to the area of electrode.

  • There are two kinds of well-known electron emissions from metal: field and thermionic emission. For thermionic emission, electrons come out of a metal due to the thermal energy, whereas for field emission, electrons tunnel out of a metal through the strong electric field. In this study, the most general electron emission caused by the temperature and electric field with a free electron gas model was considered. The total current density of electron emission comes from the field emission effect, where the electron energy is lower than vacuum, and from the thermionic-emission effect, where the electron energy is higher than vacuum. The total current density of electron emission is shown as a function of the temperature for a constant electric field, and as a function of the electric field for a constant temperature.

  • We observed the destruction of the liquid crystal alignment with the repeating scan of strong DC electric field. The strong electric field seems to force the alignment to be scarred permanently and it accumulated with the repetition. In this report we connected alignment destruction behavior and electric field strength to obtain information on the alignment strength. And we compared the behavior between different alignment techniques.

  • In theoretical simulations of proton transfer in DNA, environmental factors nearly have not been considered. In our calculations, using QM/MM method on the basis of CP2K, proton transfer on adenine-thymine base pair is studied in water, at wide scope temperature, and under the external electric field. Our results indicate that the external electric field induces the proton transfer at room temperature, and its intensity and temperature have some effect on hole localization and proton transfer.
