  • Rapid Expansion of EVs(Electric Vehicles) is inevitable trends, to comply with eco-friendly energy paradigm according to Paris Agreement and to solve the environment problems such as global warming. In this paper, we analyze the limit point of transformer acceptable capacity as the increase of power demand considering EVs supply in the near future. Through the analysis of transformer utilization, we suggest methods to analyze the spare capacity of transformer for the case of optimal efficiency operation and emergency operation respectively. We have the results of 18.4~29% spare capacity for the charging infrastructure to the rated capacity of transformer by analyzing the existing sample apartments. It is analyzed that the acceptable number of EVs is 0.09~0.14 for optimal efficiency operation and 0.06~0.13 for emergency operation. Therefore, it is analyzed the power demand of EV will exceed the existing transformer spare capacity in 7~8 years as the annual growth rate of EVs is prospected 112.5% considering current annual growth rate of EVs and the government EV supply policy.

  • Hybrid transformer means the distribution transformer, one of multi-function transformer equipped with the enhancement function of harmonics and unbalance. In other words, since existing transformer are equipped simply with transformation function only, a separated electric facility should be additionally installed in order to reduce the mutual harmonics and unbalance. Meanwhile, since hybrid transformer can perform the reduction of harmonics and unbalance as well as transformation function simultaneously through zigzag winding, it doesn't need any additional electric facility. This study addressed the issue of developing and testing the performance of a generator that would reduce the harmonics supplied to the grid when grid-connected with the output of a photovoltaic inverter for photovoltaic generation system.

  • This paper presents the electric field analysis for 2[MVA] mold transformer using finite element method. The electric field was calculated for the voltage applied to the mold transformer without voids in the insulating material. Then, it was analysed the maximum electric field when the voids was in the insulating materials. And the starting voltage of partial discharge was predicted due to the voids. The effects of voids in epoxy resin on the electric field were investigated for different sizes, shapes, positions and arrangements of voids.

  • A growing number of gas-insulated transformers in underground power substations in urban areas are approaching 20 years of operation, the time when failures begin to occur. It is thus essential to prevent failure through accurate condition diagnosis of the given facility. Various solid insulation materials exist inside of the transformers, and the generated decomposition gas may differ for each gas-insulated equipment. In this study, a simulation system was designed to analyze the deterioration characteristics of SF6 decomposition gas and insulation materials under the conditions of partial discharge and thermal fault for diagnosis of gas-insulated transformers. Degradation characteristics of the insulation materials was determined using an automatic viscometer and FT-IR. The analysis results showed that the pattern of decomposition gas generation under partial discharge and thermal fault was different. In particular, acetaldehyde was detected under a thermal fault in all types of insulation, but not under partial discharge or an arc condition. In addition, in the case of insulation materials, deterioration of the insulation itself rapidly progressed as the experimental temperature increased. It was confirmed that it was possible to diagnose the internal discharge or thermal fault occurrence of the transformer through the ratio and type of decomposition gas generated in the gas-insulated transformer.

  • Transformer is widely used element on power system and industrial area. Especially the transformers installed at power system are exposed to an environment of arbitrary changed. Thus the prediction of degradation and the analysis of response to impulse are important. To conduct those works, the electrical characteristics of system should be analyzed, effectively. But the analysis of electrical characteristic in electric machine level such as pole and pad-mounted transformer is almost no, thus commercial VNA (Vector Network Analyzer) is used to getting the response in wide frequency range. However, the output power of VNA is usually under 10mW, so verification for effectiveness of measuring electrically large component should be conducted, firstly. Next, after getting total S-parameter of transformer, predicting impulse response can be performed in time-domain with circuit simulator. In this paper, it is introduced that verification effectiveness of VNA using transfer function from SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analyzer), firstly. Next, total S-parameter, six by six matix form, was built using measured 2 port S-parameter from vector network analyzer. To get the response to impulse which is defined by IEC 60060-1, time-domain simulation is conducted to ADS (Advenced Design System) circuit simulator.

  • As the electric system is getting larger to meet the increasing demand for electric power, the rating of power apparatus is becoming inevitably higher in its working voltage and larger in its capacity. According to KEPCO reports, power transformers in the KEPCO system have undergone troubles such as winding short insulation breakdowns every year since 1981. the cause of this troubles were high one line grounding fault currents in KEPCO systems that had direct grounding systems. KEPCO has installed the NGR(neutral grounding reactor) to lower this fault current and reduced winding short insulation breakdowns in power transformers. But when a circuit breaker opened a no load bus, some trips of circuit breakers for protecting transformer have occurred by mal-operation of 59GT(overvoltage ground relay) that detect disconnection of NGR. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed the cause and examined the effect of time delav circuit to prevent wrong operation of 59GT.

  • Comparative analysis of driving inverters for piezo-electric transformer (PT) is performed and the suit- able drive circuit for portable devices such as personal digital assistants (PDA) is chosen with the experiment in this paper. As a result, a single-switch inverter with a small two winding reactor is chosen, and then the advantages of this method are clarified. It is also confirmed that the driving inverter with this method enables to realize a stabilized AC 400v output and 82% power efficiency from DC 3V input under the conditions of the variations of load current or input voltage from the experiments. • This paper presents hybrid expert system for diagnosis of electric power transformer faults. The expert system diagnose and detect faults in oil-filled power transformers based on dissolved gas analysis. As the preprocessing stage, fuzzy information theory is used to manage the uncertainty in transformer fault diagnosis using dissolved gas analysis. The Kohonen neural network takes the interim results by applying fuzzy informations theory as inputs, and performs the transformer fault diagnosis. The Proposed system tested gas records of power transformers from Korea Electric Power Corporation to verify the diagnosis performance of transformer faults.

  • Recently, unusual transformer failures have been reported in 25kV power systems connected with a VCB and transformer. In this study, performance of the protection system, dielectric strength of the transformers, characteristics of switching surges and resonance phenomena were analysed and assessed. All investigations regarding the insulation breakdown of the transformers were carried out by simulations, laboratory tests, factory tests and on-site measurements in order to thoroughly investigate the root causes. Furthermore, experimental methods for investigating the resonance phenomenon were derived and tests were conducted applying the derived method to recreate the phenomenon in the transformer. It is found that resonance between the transformer and switching surge generated by closing a VCB can initiate the breakdown of internal windings of a transformer.
